Kinda bummed this has happened, but I'm hopeful they'll fix all this as well. I have the DVD release they did here and, while great, I just want my dear Makoto and Haruka in HD lel.

They also like to act like they don't have certain materials. For years Mahou no Mako-chan had two openings, but ever since the DVD release back in 2002, they act like there has only been one. And in the case of Sailor Moon, they want us to believe there isn't a credit-less version of every opening and ending.
Knew they were full of it when I found this years ago and learned here where it came from.

Wow. Where DID that come from?

One of the Hero Club VHS tapes that Kakeru mentioned, there were some for that season too.

Is that speculation, or do we have confirmation?
A friend of mine knew people from Funimation, and told me for years they were trying to get Sailor Moon, going back to like the end of the CWI era. For awhile Toei didn't budge, and then eventually had the series up for a huge price tag. Italy supposedly paid a lot of the re-license. FUNI basically gave up because they feel like magical girl series, Sailor Moon or not, are too risky.

Hmm... my uninformed opinion is that they made a mistake by giving up. I'm pretty sure Viz are gonna make a pretty nice profit with it, no matter the reviews.

Hmm, very interesting. (I knew they had been trying for a few years, but never knew they had been trying quite that long!) I had been thinking Viz just managed to offer something that Toei/Naoko liked better than Funi's offer, but apparently not. I wonder if they regret not trying harder though after seeing Viz's success with it, controversy aside.

Has Funi licensed any classic anime in recent years other than DBZ and now Cowboy Bebop? There was a lot of awful when it came to ADV but at least they did their best to market a range.

Yu Yu Hakusho (it is as old as Sailor Moon).

They also released some of my favorite anime pieces (X, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles OVAS, xxxHolic, Blood-C), though those aren't considered classic titles.

Heck, I guess you could sum it up like this. The fans expected decent Blu-rays, and ended up with Blur-rays instead.

If by classic you mean old then they don't license old anime anymore, not older than 5 years anyway. The last old anime they picked up was Initial D (which they had redubbed stages 1 & 2 and dubbed stages 3 & 4 with the new cast) and though it was their own fault (out of order releases & no explanation for letterboxed stages 3 & 4), it failed for them and they never picked up the rest of it.

Rescues from other companies like Cowboy Bebop, Eureka Seven, Haruhi Suzumiya, Akira & 90s Tenchi should not count because all the work had already been done by whoever had it previously so they just reuse whatever is there and if we're lucky, include some of the previous company's extras (which is rare because of lot of their re-releases don't).

Not a recent license, they have had Yu Yu Hakusho since 2001, you can say the first movie & OVAs are (they got those in 2011) but those were picked up along with the show's Blu-ray's masters (which had each of those released on a bonus DVD with the JP Blu-ray boxes).

And meanwhile we're STILL waiting for them to get the second film. >:(

With the exception of X TV (since it's also a rescue), those were picked up when they were recent and with the way they dropped xxxHolic, you're lucky that they even picked up those Tsubasa OVAs.

I get that this is an amateur fan review, but placing a camera in front of a TV screen is definitely not the way to do a proper or even remotely accurate comparison between two mediums of home video.

Also, let's see a high resolution comparison of the Japanese DVD and Viz blu-ray in motion.

They're definitely working with something better than the laserdisc masters. This release looks way, way too sharp for that. Almost positive it's the JP DVD masters from 2002 but the files were botched during a conversion or compression process.

Whatever it is, but that picture looks great! Much better than the Blu-Rays.

It's probably something in between the two Japanese sources.

I saw this on /a/ about an hour ago:

I checked the Hulu stream, and it's real. Here's a larger, uncropped version: http://i.imgur.com/l3xxtON.jpg

If Viz would simply admit that they screwed up big time with the video, I would be much happier with them. I really would. But the fact that they keep LYING and insisting that THIS is the best Sailor Moon has ever looked is insulting.
