I wouldn't lose hope.

Give it time, and TOEI will release "Sailor Moon" on blu-ray in Japan.

Some negotiations here & there, and then I'm sure it'll be distributed in North America.
Yeah in another ten years.

Viz should've gotten it right this time.

I can't I have no computer, all of this post is neither my iphone or my library college and have no time to go though all the videos.
It's too much to go through. As ChibiBoi said, the blended frames appear in every scene. People have reported this already and Viz keeps replying that "it's like that on their source".

A fan on another forum e-mailed them about the one with her eyes cut out and they said that it couldn't be found.

Thanks to @SMoonCenter for finding this sort of news, of what Viz did to the masters from Toei, according to Kentai on the Blu-ray Forum:

What sort of elements did the Japanese give to Viz? On 16mm? A Hard Drive? A HD tape? Or something other?
According to the ANNCast interview, Viz Media worked from Apple ProRes Quicktime files delivered on a hard-drive, which would have been essentially identical to their NTSC Digibeta masters.

This is more or less standard in the industry for any licensor that doesn't own a Digibeta deck and a professional capture card setup - files are easy and cheap to work with. Tapes, eh, not unless you're big enough to own all the hardware and do it yourself long-term.

The current assumption is that all other "Remastered" DVD releases world wide - Italian, German, Mexican and so on - are based on the very same NTSC materials. In fact, the Italian DVDs, despite being progressive PAL, have virtually identical framing, color and grain levels as the Japanese DVDs. If Dynamic Italy they did their own telecine work and somehow got identical results, I'd be shocked! The far more likely answer is that Dynamic Italy was able to restore the show to 23.98fps without causing blended frames, and then pitched them up to 25fps PAL. It's far from impossible - heck, I've done it more times than I'll remember. It's just harder with animation due to the limited frame-rate, and if you don't know how to properly IVTC cartoons, you shouldn't be doing it professionally. Simple as that.

Simply put, Toei's masters were worse than the R2 DVDs made from them, the other international releases would have the same issues Viz is showing. As far as I'm aware, they do not. Ergo, everything that's happened in regards to ghosting, DVNR and color funkiness are the result of Viz's production pre-processing, not the materials themselves.

I don't care what Viz has to say on the matter at this point, and neither should anyone who cares about actual image quality: They're spinning hard to cover their own butts, and for them to dare say that frame blending was "on the [interlaced] masters" - and not the result of a poor IVTC algorithm setting - is about as bold faced as it gets.

Also, why would they use DNR on some scenes but not others?
They didn't, I assure you. It's complicated, but basically you can set DVNR to only process certain frequencies - say, only really course, large grain but leave the fine grain be, or only heavy grain on blues while leaving reds alone.

Basically, the fact that one scene looks relatively unfiltered doesn't mean that it wasn't filtered: Just that the DVNR algorithm isn't looking for whatever that particular scene is showing.

I read that blog. And I think Kentai needs to be hired by Viz, since he knows the specs and remastering.

I've heard he dislikes the series... But he should definitely contact Viz!

Hi Angela,

Thanks for writing in! I can see where your concerns stem from, but I think this image may be a fake? I just checked episode 36 myself and was unable to see the scene in question.

If you've encountered this issue yourself, please let me know! I, however, was unable to replicate this scene while viewing the episode on the Neon Alley site (which streams through Hulu).

I included a few screenshots so you can take a look!

Thanks!

FACEPALM! Seriously, Viz?! They don't know "timing", plus hulu doesn't have a frame-advance option. Where's their email, so I can tell them about this.

All the talk about having to take print screens over and over again to see the mistakes or having to time it just right... To me it just proves that if you're simply watching the show on your living room couch, enjoying the actual SHOW, you won't even see these things. I don't know many people who watch their anime frame by frame, with their finger permanently fixed on the pause button

Well there's the fact that they saw it in the first place. As well as the fact that it shouldn't be there at all.

I actually saw the ghosting when I watched on Hulu.

Or, maybe it's something that in some scenes is literally happening all the time, and is constantly noticeable:

Instead of sitting back and pretending like I won't notice how bad the picture quality is if I just lose myself in the show, I've been working to get the subs synced up with the Italian DVDs. It's going great so far:

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/101582

Very easy once you know the routine (the process is the same if you need the English dub as well). I want to watch this show uncut and English friendly, but I'm not going to settle for Viz's table scraps when I can achieve more than they ever did with my home computer!

CHECK THE MAP
Why are so many people in this thread getting so defensive over people complaining about the video quality? People are allowed to complain about the quality of the products they spent their money on. That's simple consumerism. Nobody is being attacked for being fine with the release. It has nothing to do with you guys, it's about Viz and Toei.

Wait, are you going the synch the Viz dub to it as well? Either way, I can't wait to see the results.
