And the poor US production team completely gets the shaft because even if you can read kanji, they're still screwed unless you have the limited edition with the booklet. Even then, only the regulars are credited.

I'm glad they left the kanji in because textless sequences don't exist for every opening, but there should at least be a separate credit roll...

I don't think Pioneer's masters were that bad. They were laserdisc masters, which at the time were probably the best. The main problem with Pioneer's release was the lack of previews, name translations (which are understandable, since the Witches 5's names are ridiculous), and incorrect openings.

I actually prefer Pioneer's release over Viz's right now. At least Pioneer's translation felt a little bit more natural, they translated the credits, and had the pre-episode preview in the proper place.
Neither do I. It did have the unfortunate issues you mentioned, but otherwise it was pretty good. It had its advantages too, even over the current Viz release.

Though, I'm actually fairly happy with Viz's release. My biggest issue is the remastering, and if it ever gets fixed I could overlook the other stuff. (aside from maybe the lack of translated credits. Would really like that fixed too.)

As far as ADV's release goes, it's my understanding they could only use DIC's masters, which were the original TV masters.
Yup, Japan wouldn't give them any better masters so they had to stick with what Dic had. Which unfortunately, were poorly maintained and missing an episode, hence the ADV set quality.

It's sad that it's so hard to get a perfect Sailor Moon release over here.
It's not only sad, but impossible. We've gotten close a couple times, but I don't think we've ever had a release I'd truly call perfect. And I'm afraid the chances we ever will aren't that great considering we're already on the re-releases...

I wouldn't lose hope.

Give it time, and TOEI will release "Sailor Moon" on blu-ray in Japan.

Some negotiations here & there, and then I'm sure it'll be distributed in North America.

They also blocked the S movie's ending animation with a black screen showing their English credits.

Which makes their handling of episode 89's opening even more dumb because DiC had it all along and even used it in the beginning of their own dub for that episode.

Is there any proof that Toei didn't move the first & second season's previews themselves on their DVDs? I ask because they did something similar to that with a lot of their other older shows for DVD. Dragon Ball/Z, Fist of the North Star & Dr. Slump had their next episode previews moved to after the ending credits instead of before them which was how they originally aired.

The proof with DB/Z can be seen in old clips which are still easy to find and were recorded from the original broadcast.

The DVDs in question which had them moved were the Dragon Boxes released in 2003 & 2004 & the singles released afterwards since they used the exact same discs and FUNimation's releases (which I still own) left them the same way.

As for Fist of the North Star, the streams that Toei posted everywhere used the same screwed up masters from their 2003-2004 DVDs.

The 25th Anniversary DVD box released in 2008 had a new remaster and Toei fixed a lot of what was wrong with the original discs, one of them being the previews in question and these masters are what Discotek used for their DVDs.

As for Dr. Slump, they didn't release that show on DVD until 2007 and from what I've seen online, they switched them there too.

DVD: http://youtu.be/lEu9ppIrCRg?t=24m7s (24:07 mark)

(^different episodes but the point still stands here)

As for Sailor Moon, I guess we'll really find out when Viz gets to S how the previews are handled there. If they're the same as the Pioneer DVDs then it really might be a masters issue since I doubt they moved the first & R previews themselves to be consistent with the previous releases.

It's too bad Viz didn't just go for a SD DVD release, and then wait on releasing a Blu-Ray once Japan does.
The complaints would have been no different anyway since as mentioned before, Toei has been doing their own upscales now through Q-Tec and each of them are like Q-Tec's other upscales which were very awful.

Just thought ya'll might want to know that the ghosting is not limited to just the Blu-Rays and DVDs. It's also on Hulu as well:

EDIT: The above pic is from the recent upload of episode 24 dubbed. To prove that the ghosting has been on Hulu all along from the very beginning, here's a pic from the subbed episode 1 that was uploaded months ago:

But, didn't they include the original Japanese credits as an extra? I'm actually okay with that, although I like Nozomi and Sentai's way of leaving credits as is, and then putting in an English credit scroll. Using the wrong "creditless" openings was more annoying.

Which makes their handling of episode 89's opening even more dumb because DiC had it all along and even used it in the beginning of their own dub for that episode.
This still boogles my mind, especially when the episode 89 opening was creditless to begin with. There was absolutely no excuse as to why it wasn't included.

Even if Toei did move them, that's not how they are on the R2 DVDs. That's now how it was when DIC and CWI dubbed the series. That's not how it was on the Pioneer release. Regardless who's responsible, I don't like that. P-:

The image of the "Dragon Ball Z" blu-rays is allegedly cropped, but as far as I know there's no ghosting, and the sets are much cheaper. Season 1 (the whole season) costs U$24.99 on Amazon.

It's impossible to give you the time frames for the blended frames because it appears like every second of every scene LOL LITERALLY.

I just watched some of R on hulu , I'm not seeing any ghosting like classic but the colors are still over saturated , it has more grain which is good though so I guess they eased up a bit on the dnr. I'm no videophile though , I only have a thin grasp of all these terms.

I checked the Hulu stream, and it's real. Here's a larger, uncropped version: http://i.imgur.com/l3xxtON.jpg

If Viz would simply admit that they screwed up big time with the video, I would be much happier with them. I really would. But the fact that they keep LYING and insisting that THIS is the best Sailor Moon has ever looked is insulting.
Here's another one:

The sign subtitles are much blockier then the blu rays. I wish they'd kept them that way as they're much easier to read from a distance.
