::love::

Thank you! Finding all these websites, blogs, and articles was a ton of fun and very interesting. I only wish I could read Japanese (or that Google were better at translating Japanese) so that I could properly know what they're all saying. They seem to be mostly neutral to positive (with lots of love for the music), but I could be wrong. Still, it was cool just to discover how much Japanese fans were talking about the dub. Finding one site devoted to the S dub and one blog reviewing season 1 was incredible. I only wish there were blogs discussing R, SuperS, and maybe the movies. (Maybe there are and I just haven't found them yet, though I'm pretty sure I've found all that there is. Only other blog I've been able to find didn't have much to say, though its author seems to think Mamoru's dub name is "Julian" and Mercury's attack is "Mercury Bubbles Breath")

Oh! Guess I forgot to link to this article about the Usagi (& Chibiusa) Birthday event from two years ago. There was a trivia portion where one of the questions was what Usagi's nickname in America was, and Kotono herself knew it was "Meatball Head"!

From Naoko's interview with Animerica Magazine in 1998:

I also came across a blog (no longer being updated) where someone was posting summaries of each episode of the 90s anime and Crystal. They decided to write their summary of Crystal Act 10 in Japanese and English, and they translated セーラー戦士 as "Sailor Scouts."

From the September 1995 issue of Nakayoshi:

link

At last, in the fall, the anime will start on a large scale in the US, airing on 50 or more broadcast stations.
Now it's becoming a big deal.
Of course, a lot of books and goods will be released.
In America, the names have been changed, so here's a special crash course!
Usagi Tsukino > Serena
Ami Mizuno > Amy (Incorrectly rendered as アミー Ammy)
Rei Hino > Rei (Written the same way, so the spelling change isn't conveyed)
Makoto Kino > Lita
Minako Aino > Mina
Mamoru Chiba > Darien
After the makeover, Luna and Artemis still have the same names.
And, instead of the familiar catchphrase "In the name of the moon, I'll punish you!" it will be:
"On behalf of the moon, I will fight evil and that means You!"
Tricky?
I love that they dedicated so much space to reporting on the American dub, even if it's a bit odd. I know Japan loves English/America, but giving such attention to the American dub and so little to the other dubs feels a little imbalanced to me.

Out of curiosity, I wanted to try and find out what Japanese fans think about the Viz dub (if anything), but I wasn't really able to turn up much:

I found a few articles like this one about Viz acquiring the license to the 90s anime and Crystal back in 2014.

I found a discussion thread about Viz's recent snafu with the Stars Part 1 booklet (though the discussion seems to be just about LGBT people/characters and not really about Viz per se)

I found a video on NicoNico comparing various dubs of the scene of Usagi and Naru rehearsing Moonlight Densetsu from episode 7, including the DiC and Viz dubs. There are no comments on the video, however, but I can't imagine anyone thinking the Viz version is better, yikes.

The only other thing I could find was a person on Pivix (who is undoubtedly a weeaboo) going around and commenting variations of "::love::Stephanie-chan::love::" on various pieces of Usagi fan art, prompting a lot of confused reactions from the Japanese artists, and going on to explain that they like to refer to Sailor Moon characters by their Viz dub actor's name. So, yeah. That's the impression of Viz dub fans that's being made overseas
