Personally, having loved the manga above any other form of Sailormoon transposition, I would have preferred that everything was faithful to that in Crystal / Eternal, including the style.
I've always been willing to compromise on the style factor to have a smooth animation, but, given the turn that character designers have taken, I would like to put together a couple of ideas that came to me.

In 1989 an animated series called "idol densetsu Eriko" was released in Japan, the style used is very reminiscent of both the 90's Sailormoon series and the Naoko style. Some animators in particular accentuate these similarities. I put some photos as an example.
Spoiler: show

I think it would be an interesting style for Sailormoon to try, but with some tweaks.
There is another anime called "mermaid melody pichi pichi pitch" with a wonderful coloring, especially the eyes, where the protagonist in her princess shape has characteristics that I would like to find in Sailormoon crystal / eternal, like hairs.
Spoiler: show

Of Sailormoon Crystal 1 and 2 I would keep the mature aspect and the lips, of season 3 I would keep the fluidity of the animation, of eternal I find the legs beautiful, very similar to those designed by Naoko.

styles like Heartcatch precure and Go princess precure may also be good for me.

for the fights I hope they refer to the series of pretty cures but bigger.

For the fifth narrative arc I hope they put every possible resource to animate it well, especially because it shows the powers of Sailor Senshi as never seen before, it would be bad to see everything animated badly.

Many say that the style of Naoko Takeuchi is impossible to animate due to old images of the author, however I do not agree, especially given the progress made in the field of animation in Japan in recent years.

And you? What references would you use?

For me the manga is my favorite version and I want everything to be more or less based on it. If they want a more moe look to the characters they can base their designs from the shinsoban covers. Otherwise something to what they do with Isetan. Transformations i want them short and brisk like in Puella Madoka, attacks strong and powerful like in the Moon Pride opening. But people want so many different stuff that whatever they do someone will hate it

Its actually Naoko's!
I think that the liner notes say that this is her take on a more "movie style" of her own artwork.
If I'm correct, this was drawn/painted on cells
It looks like a mix between Yukie Sakou X Tadano 90s and that makes it the perfect character design for me. I‘m tired of Ikuko Itoh‘s million fan-reproductions.

I could get behind a mix of their styles, too! And I'm tired of the Itoh reproductions as well. I think thats why I've found Marco Albieri's work to not be impressive

jk (not really)

I really don't know who was behind the Moon Pride MV but I really love their taken on the first artstyle:

Mars may look wonky, but she is the furthest fron the shoot and Jupiter being the closer one looks really good, also the skirts reminds me to Naoko's 2003 style:

Also I really think something ala Sugar Sugar Run woild fit. Something about the eyes on that anime reminds me a lot to Sailor Moon:

I'd also love a Sakou/Tadano collaboration! I certainly appreciate Ms. Tadano's proportions, they somewhat have sense of realism. I love how Miss Sakou illustrates Mars, Jupiter, and Venus' hair, that, and the lips. The combination works well, IMO!

I personally love the Moon Pride cover art and I wish they managed to actually keep this kind f artwork, sadly impossible... This was the best Crystal ever looked to me, but they needed a Disney budget to pull that off. The first time I saw this I was so exciited, but then the trailer came out. I love noses, the lips even the eyes look alive in this one, not mention the great shading and skirts, but then the actual style looked nothing like this.
Maybe in another 30 years. I never had an issue with the girls looking older nor the exaggerated proportions - this is a bishoujo fantasy .

K Project by GoHands/Gora. Love the quality animation and CLAMP-ish designs.

If only this would be :haruka:'s Space Turbulence. :wow:

Or I could settle for something like Bungo Stray Dogs by Bones.

Even though I‘m generally not a fan of how anime looks like since the 2000s I totally recognize the quality of animation in both examples.

SO I know this is an old thread but I just saw that Funimation was gonna upload this anime called Wonder Egg Priority and damn, it's what I was really expecting for a modernized Sailor Moon:
Spoiler: show

I still need to see the show but it sumires this whole modern anime aesthetics used lately that looks pretty and cute (reminds me kinda to a moe Violet Evergarden) and it could work if they went for the 2003 shinsoban cover arts look.

OR they could go for something like Welcome to the Ballroom lol I love this artstyle (the eyes details) and the animation is top notch:
Spoiler: show

But Toei won't give us this kind of animation and detail, so... sigh :blue:
