What if ADV had released an “uncut” dub of Classic and R back in the day?

Back in the early 2000s Pioneer released bilingual uncut releases of S and SuperS for the English dub this amounted to placing the already recorded English audio on the uncut footage. Since this dub was barely edited, physically, this was easy to do. Albeit it was an uncut dub in name only since most of the censorship was in the dialog that wasn’t altered for an uncut version.

ADV on the other hand didn’t have the luxury of this. 6 undubbed episodes, two episodes were merged into one and whole scenes were rearranged or played in reverse like Rini with a gun or Serena and Darien taking the Princess Peach method of travel down the embassy. It would have been next to impossible to simply play the existing English audio over the uncut footage. But say ADV had decided to commission Optimum to re-record an uncut English dub they could use with the missing episodes dubbed and what not. How do you think it would have turned out? Would it have “replaced” the edited tv dub? (Think of how most people forget about the Ocean/Funimation dub of DBZ’s first two seasons ever since the uncut redub replaced it in 2005)

Here’s what I would think would happen:

Obviously Optimum would have to work with who they currently have. Meaning Liza Balkan, Emilie Barlow, and Stephanie Beard would be replacing Karen Berenstein, Stephanie Morgenstern, and Tracey Hoyt respectively for Classic and R. Same with Vincent Corroza being Darien’s voice for the entire thing instead of just the final 17 episodes.

There would be a decent chance Terri Hawkes would reprise her role as Serena. She would no longer be on maternity leave and Optimum clearly preferred her over Linda Ballantyne. Though it also possible Linda would be Serena for this redub (at least we’d get to hear more of her Serenity voice)

No Sailor Says included. The introductory stuff that was in the first 35 ish episodes would have to be dubbed probably a valley girl ified version like the R movie dub.

The next episode previews wouldn’t be dubbed as ADV didn’t get them from Toei and episode 67 wouldn’t be dubbed as that wasn’t included in the release.

the redub would probably stick to the original dub script as closely as possible but the episodes that were skipped over in 1995 would probably have faithful scripts that are borderline translations.

decent chance they would still record Zoycite as a female

There’s also a chance they’d skip Optimum and just produce their own in house dub with their go-to actors at the time. That’s what they did with their uncut Saint Seiya release which also had a concurrent censored dub by DiC (which I think they also distributed.)

Most likely, we would have ended up with Monica Riall or Amanda Wynn Lee as Usagi. I doubt they would have kept the DiC names, they’d probably just release that Dub separately like Saint Seiya.

At the time they were all about trying to portray the uncut version as separate and edgy (their sub sets were rated 15+ after all!) They probably would have upped the profanity and added more dub lines about innuendo just to get that more adult rating.

The dubs for the movies, S and SS were originally dubbed uncut (with script changes) with the intent of making edited versions. They didn't go back and redub scenes afterwards.

Anyways, I think if ADV could've redubbed the first two seasons, they'd use their own cast.

Pretty much, they also did this with Dirty Pair around this time.

Amanda Winn-Lee had already moved to Los Angeles at that point so probably not.

Plus they would have released it all in a similar amount of single volumes just like with Saint Seiya and later with their Gatchaman & Macross redubs.

They probably would have upped the profanity and added more dub lines about innuendo just to get that more adult rating.
The perfect description of a Steven Foster dub.
