Everything they produced before the movies, which while I was waiting for I finshed masters, got married, bought a house a dog and became a father, won't stay well with me. I know I'm selfsh but I won't support Toei in any way till they do what was promised. Doremi would have been if it wasn't Sailor Moon, I am waiting these for 3 years. How does Doremi has to be released before.... I'm really tired of waiting, I don't really care if it is going or not, if we are waiting 3 more years for it. It is insane. Who do this Khon think herself to be - Disney, Miyazaki... 3rd rate Deen comer. She can at least deliver.

The more I think about it, the more the 2021 release date makes sense as part of some 30th Anniversary celebration. I am convinced we’re not getting movies any earlier than 2021.

Here’s why: It’s clear the 4th Arc adaptation was supposed to coincide with the 25th Anniversary. Remember that it was initially announced with the 25th anniversary project page. For whatever reason, and I don’t really buy the scripts excuse, the project ended up stumbling on a bunch of roadblocks that caused the production to be delayed.

With production starting so late, years after the 25th anniversary, Toei probably thinks it makes more sense to time it for the 30th Anniversary since they’ll probably have other things lined up in terms of merchandise, musicals, etc.

This would all have been OK if Toei had been more transparent in the first place.

Though I can understand everyone's frustration. Dont let this rustle your feathers. As popular as DBZ is, not even it can survive without an anime series to go along with it. As a poster mentioned earlier, SM has a ton of stuff out now, just not the movies. Even tho it may not seem like it, Sailor Moon is a cultural icon. A character that transcends nations. We really have nothing to worry about. We should only worry when nothing is coming out at all. As long as we see her getting some attention, we at least know she is still marketable to them

What's funny to me is that if we did a gag GoFundMe page for Sailor Moon movies and every fan was asked to donate just $1...I bet we could get our own movie made faster.

All jokes aside, they are probably still having "script" issues...I think the director we have now is a good sign and that it may be turned into a real SM movie where some scenes won't be modified for TV. I think a lot of liberties will be given to Ms. Kon. There are some scenes in SuperS that are definitely nothing like Pretty Cure. So they need to blend Cyrstal and 90s effectively. I'm going to remain hopeful until I hear or see them say, 'Y'all ain't getting s*it.." :creeper::googly:

They need to release the movies later this year and 2020 and then release Stars in 2021 as the the celebration for the 30th Anniversary and end of the cycle, then announce the other SM series they have secretly been producing...lol

They had 3 years to adapt 25 year-old material, done so many times in so many mediums. I was 22 when Crystal was announced. I am 28 now. This is not ok, absolutely not ok.... Script issues they had almost an year before announcing these to be films. What were they doing a whole year damn them. If it is not out next year, I am done with this trash. And I have been a fan since 1995. Most people would be over with it by the end of this year.

The movies are 100% NOT happening this year. Toei announce their movies’ release dates at least a year in advance. We would have already known a date by now.

Honestly, it’s not even worth getting upset over because the Crystal brand is subpar anyway and it’s not like the movie will offer anything new for the franchise. It’s going to be a watered down version of the story with subpar animation just like the previous seasons.

I think the Crystal project hasn't been abandoned yet - it's just being kept pushing to the back of Toei's production queue again & again, probably indefinitely. lol

I highly suspect Toei has quietly canceled Crystal and are just waiting for the 30th anniversary to reboot Crystal/Sailor Moon with a new anime adaptation, probably with more of the 90s staff involved.

Yes, they will announce it on 30th birthday to be released for the 40th.Jokes aside I doubt they would try rebooting it so soon.

I don't necessarily mean that they're waiting for the 30th Anniversary to start all over again with a new anime starting over from the Dark Kingdom arc. But I could see them wanting to put some distance between any new work and the first 2/3 seasons of Crystal, which were a disaster. I think instead of doing the Dream arc as movies, they'll do it as a TV anime, under a new title (i.e. not as "Sailor Moon Crystal" but as "Sailor Moon Dream" or "Sailor Moon: New Moon" or something), with 90s style animation/character designs, hopefully not still as a 1:1 adaptation, and possibly with a new cast (though they'd probably still keep Kotono). Kind of a partial reboot instead of a total one.

I don't see it happening. I think they just wanna kill this franchise so nobody would want anime out of it ever again. So precure, doremi etc can shine and bring them money.

They don't want to and they can't kill this franchise because it's giving them millions.
Sometimes it seems we lose all sight on what SM represents.
I live in Europe and I happen to travel a lot. In Germany, France, Italy or Spain sells far more than Precure, Doremi, Digimon or other popular animes produced by Toei together.
I also travelled to Japan last summer and I could see tons of merchandise in different shops. The Sailor Moon Store has been a success, they are releasing lots of merchandise every week, doing collaborations with important companies in Japan and we have the attraction at Universal Studios Japan, that was extended for one more month because of the incredible numbers and attendance. And this year they are making another attraction based on a SM story.
Can we talk about the SM Musicals? They have been to Paris, to the USA. This is a milestone for all the Japanese anime industry.
I mean, do you really think they want to kill this franchise? I am sure that SM is one of the top 5 properties of Toei. And maybe the most popular after Dragon Ball and One Piece.
Are we sure it is not Naoko who's blocking all this thing? She blocked the rights of the series for more than a decade.

I can actually sort of see this. I wouldn’t say this is baseless speculation either considering all of the latest Sailor Moon Crystal collabs don’t even use the Crystal logo (instead opting for the generic 25th anniversary logo) and have been looking more and more like the ‘90s anime designs. The Dream arc is also probably their best chance to do a soft reboot, since it’s most like the Dark Kingdom arc and it’s the most well recieved arc of the manga.

The only thing I don’t see them doing is replacing the cast, since they’re still recording lines for the collabs and the 4-D Attraction. I also wouldn’t count out these still being movies either, but maybe they can expand it to three parts and include new content?

Another thing to keep in mind is that with the original 90s anime, the first three seasons didn't really stray significantly from their manga counterparts. Naoko was very pleased with them and they're probably the most beloved seasons among fans. SuperS and Sailor Stars, on the other hand, were wildly different from the manga, Naoko was a bit disappointed with them, and most fans don't much care for them. Classic through S didn't necessarily "need" a remake because they still hold up and are beloved. It's really only SuperS and Sailor Stars that needed to be remade. So I think doing a soft relaunch of Crystal with 90s style animation starting with the Dream arc could be a way to sort of make up for the sins (so to speak) of SuperS and Sailor Stars, and ultimately result in a complete, 90s (style), five season work that's close to the source material and that fans (and Naoko) can enjoy from start to finish. If they so chose, they could even use it to rectify the sins of the rushed SenxShi debacle from season 1/2 by actually properly exploring those pairings and resurrecting the Four Kings.

I really don't like how people always blame Naoko for everything. She is not stoping them, we have zero evidence of any involvment on her part. She stopped rights ages ago for respectable reason and it is a public matter. But some people keep thing she is the villain behind the scene. I like Memento's idea I would love art retaining the beauty of the 90s with refinment detail and modern animation. And most of all consistency. But t is not worth it another 20 years of wait... Normal studios produce them in two and their characters don't look different from scene to scene.
