True, but he never had a peak so to say. From douche back yo damzel in distress to paedo and finally boring no touch boyfriend and back to damzel in distress.
Ugh Mamoru was never a pedophile and as for Usagi he touched her numerous times in the anime they kissed quite frequently.

Also I don't think that Mamoru was shafted in the 90s anime. He was still personality wise the same as his manga counterpart. A reserved intelligent young man who is a valorous hero and a loving boyfriend. Not to mention he saved the Senshi's collective bacon numerous times. He even defeated Beryl in her first form in the 90s anime. The main thing that would have made him better would have been to give him an attack like in the manga with Tuxedo La Smoking Bomber.

even I accept him being Earth's rep
all I can say is chiba maybe be a pain in my butt but I won't take that title away from him LOL

I don't ship him with Usagi but I don't agree with the pedo argument
remember Japan has different views on age, deal with it

now him watching her sleep in crystal act 4 I don't like that was stalkerish in my view
90 % of the time he is a damsel though LOL

anyways here's a hoot for yall lol

Boy, Mamoru can never win with the majority of the Sailor Moon fandom. He’s too “douche-y” in the old anime, but later on in the series as Usagi’s nice boyfriend, he’s too boring. Then people dislike that he “interrupts” SM’s fights with his “useless” roses and how he should leave this all to “girl power”, but then when he does and when SM barely needs his help anymore, people want to call him useless. They say that Mamoru comes off as a creep in the older anime, yet he does some even creepier things in the first arc of SMC, but it’s fine because it’s “Crystal/Manga Mamoru” . Honestly, I’m starting to think people just love hating on him.

Now as for people not accepting him as Sailor Earth, well it’s kinda been said already. They either think he’s too useless to be one, or the whole “ senshi can only be girls” claim confuses them into thinking that Mamoru doesn’t take the place of Sailor Earth.

It was not a problem that he was useless. The writers were cruel with him on so many levels. Horrible outfits, ridiculuously cheesy and a bit comical transformation, the douchey stuff. How can you take seriously and not laughing at guy that comes out of nowhere amidst a fight citing some funny haiku that is simply out of place.

You forgot to add to the list 'They say Crystal Mamoru's Tuxedo La Smoking Bomber rips off Vegeta's Big Bang Attack in Dragon Ball Z in the most boring way possible like Yamcha getting Super Saiyan powers for no reason.'

Considering Classic SM was mostly centered around comedy (as well as other things), the cheesy haikus and comical transformations fit into the criterion. As for the ”douche-y” stuff, I’ve seen anime where the character’s love interest do worst than Mamoru (like attempting to kill them) and many people still ship it to death, so honestly, I think people are overreacting with Mamoru and just forever hating on any flaw he has.

I didn’t even know about that one, but yeah, that just proves my point even more. They think his roses are “useless” and should receive “real” power and then when he does the very thing they want, they have to say something negative about that too. (Facepalm)

Yes, and while everyone does have a right to their opinions, I also have a right to point out the hypocrisy that I see in their opinions. I mean, no hard feelings, it’s just that after a while, it gets pretty annoying, especially when it’s a character most of the fandom decides to hate on.

Personally I think all of the hatred Mamoru gets has no logical basis. For one I don't think he was douchey in the first season not anymore then say Rei or Usagi could also be douchey. Also to sapphire91 I actually liked alot of Mamoru's outfits and I liked his haikus he would say to the Senshi when he saved them I thought it was gallant and pretty. Again I think that the hate Mamoru gets is stupid and silly. As he was nothing less then a good boyfriend to Usagi, a gallant fighter and good eprson.

My favorite Mamoru was probably the manga version but I think Mamoru was overhated in the original anime, and despite the age gap in the anime not being ideal at all (it being 20/16 by the end of the original anime), I never saw it as creepy, especially considering how they never had sex unlike in the manga (though it was implied there, and the first time Usagi and Mamoru only would have been 14/17, but I'm guessing like Romeo and Juliet, Sailor Moon does have artistic, literary and cinematic value), but they should have lowered Mamoru's age (in some retelling I'm doing, I'm keeping it a two year age gap like the manga).

Mamoru in the anime was frustrating during the breakup thing, but I feel for his relationship with Usagi, whilst it grew pretty quick (in a good way) in the manga, it was more gradual in the original anime, later we see signs of him caring for Usagi, like eating all of her charred cookies to make her happy (and cheering her up too when she felt like a failure).

Actually Usagi and Mamoru did have sex in the 90s anime this was heavily implied with the whole Usagi being familiar with Mamoru's bed line. Exactly when they did the deed I don't know but I think it had to have been atleast by S. Which isn't a big deal. I mean most 14 year olds when I was in school with them were all having sex. I was pretty much the only one who was celibate as being in the small town I was in especially at the time I was that age in the early 2000s in KY no one was out and it was practically like a witch hunt going after kids who were gay or trans. However again if you were straight you were probably getting it in constantly. In fact due to the whole abstinence only thing being taught at the schools and given the nature of randy cheerleaders this only made the teen pregnancy rate and teen HIV rate go sky high. The situation was so bad that my brother's High School had a daycare center because so many girls were popping out babies. My brother even knew a girl who had over 6 abortions. So again teenagers are sexual creatures and pretending like they aren't is pure nonsense so I see no issue with Usagi having sex with Mamoru in the 90s anime regardless of their age difference.

As for Mamoru in the break up arc again I don't see why he was hated there he only did what he did to protect Usagi as he thought his presence with her would spell her doom. Now don't get me wrong I am not a fan of the break up arc but it can be explained away. Also I really don't think the manga was anymore gradual in how they fell in love then the 90s anime. They pretty much like in the 90s went from fussing and fighting to eventually having feelings for each other once someone's identity is found. Of course there were signs in the 90s, manga and Crystal that they had feelings for each other. However again really all the hate that Mamoru gets is really baseless in my opinion.
