Why do they always left the Stars arc abandoned?

I was always under the impression that Stars did not do well initially because the ratings had not picked up from SuperS. I believe the ratings took a huge dive during SuperS and never quite recovered, but my understanding was always that Stars was fairly successful compared to SuperS.
Here's the ratings:

Oh, I guess all those stories about how the ratings dropped were over-exaggerated.

Super S started with 14% audience rating and ended with 12% rating.

And Stars began with 12% as well and ended with 10%

Yes that is a bit of a drop, but its not the show destroying kind. Especially if you compare Super S and Stars' ratings to the first season, which began with 11% and ended with 12%

Well, whatever the issues of the past, what matters now is that it's going to be dubbed by Viz and Studiopolis.

And subbed on Hulu before that...

Looking forward to watching 167-172 again, not so much for the rest.

Hey Rika-Chicchi you mentioned a missing movie in Stars. I have never heard of this was Stars supposed to have a movie and if so do you know what the plot would have been?

The absence of Stars merchandise here is a bit weird.

My only explanation for this (i.e. it's not some grand conspiracy) is the merchandise market itself. If fans here in Japan (via surveys) haven't expressed enough interest in the items, Bandai won't bother making them. There was a huge, in-depth survey sent to all the people who ordered the first few items released. I got the survey after I ordered the Miracle Romance Moon powder makeup compact. On that survey was every major character, and manufacture-able special item and category you can imagine, including Stars season items, Eternal Sailor Moon items, etc. Many of the things listed on that survey have come into fruition, like the henshin pens, costumes, Moon's brooches, premium earrings, and clothing collaborations. But most of the survey items have not appeared on the market (yet?), Stars stuff as well as Venus' chain, Chibi Moon's compacts and Proplica weapons.

If there isn't a market for those goods, and customers in Japan aren't interested in buying them, Bandai won't make them.
Again, that's just a guess. I don't think it's a grand conspiracy or a deliberate or specific snub to the season. Rather it's simple customer demand, marketable, and money-making.

I've mentioned this theory on this forum before when the lack of Stars merchandise was brought up, but it was totally ignored.
I guess it isn't juicy or sensational enough...? ^_^'

It's easy to blame Naoko (or rather the mythos around Naoko), or North American licensing issues.... But 'Stars' only had 10% of the ratings at the time it aired. 'Stars' wasn't as popular as the rest of 'Sailor Moon', and the general market is much, much more familiar with the 'Dark Kingdom' Arc. Companies are spending money on what they think will sell.

Sorry for my bad English - I just meant they didn't produce a movie for Stars like they did for the previous three seasons. ^_^'

Thank you for this info MoonPrincess!

Now I can see why there not much stars merchandise, you know, I love Eternal Sailor Moon and her brooch, but can't find any stuff of that besides eBay and at a very expensive price.

Let's just hope some gashapons come out later this year, can't wait for some Stars stuff!

There are a few factors as to why it was never brought over here:

1. Optimum/Cloverway had very little time before the North American license expired, hence we got an insanely rushed dub for S and SuperS.
2. In Japan, Stars is technically considered a spinoff, rather than a fifth season. Stars itself is legally a different series than seasons 1-4, therefore Optimum would've had to pay for a whole different licensing contract, which they probably didn't have the funds for (S and SuperS were "passed on" to them due to them originally being licensed to DiC, who breached their contract somehow)
3. Shortly after the license had expired, Naoko Takeuchi gained creative control over anything Sailor Moon related, and she was very reluctant to let Toei license the series outside of Japan for quite a few years.

As for the second factor; other companies (Viz included) have managed to strike a deal with Toei so that outside of Japan, Stars can be licensed as a fifth season. DiC/Optimum's license only included episodes 1-166, because the Stars "series" didn't exist in 1995.

I liked the Stars arc and how the television show made their own changes to it. I was not aware that it was considered a spin off in Japan. Have to agree with the other comments - Stars is not iconic like the seasons that came before it. I would buy the merchandise in a heartbeat but I am not so sure if the general population would be as interested.

It's not, I have no idea where Flash Over got that from.

Japan labels Stars as a fifth series as well. http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%BE%8E% ... 9.E3.83.88

That's why the ADV DVD's were sold in the early 2000's (!) Seriously, DVD's were in their primitive years, and VHS was still around and popular. I would hardly use the words "very reluctant."

Wasn't ADV releasing the DiC travesty dub around that time? I've seen people say that all they did was release what they had, particularly in regards to the subbed sets.
DVDs were fairly well established by 2003/2004.

Wikimoon has this to say on the matter:
On the anime timeline at the Toei Animation Gallery, "Sailor Stars" is listed separate from "Sailor Moon," which on their timeline concludes with the fourth season. In addition, the opening song changed from "Moonlight Densetsu," which it had been for the first four seasons, to the "Sailor Star Song."

I have an official catalog from Toei Animation, and each season is listed separately. Same thing goes for the Toei Animation Gallery. Check out this video here, you can see on the walls each season is separate.

(It's around 1:39 in the video)
