It’s a perfect 1:1 adaptation of the manga, as it is supposed to be.
It’s far from perfect, but it was an ambitious project that suffered from the problems we all know.

The perfect adaptation in my opinion would stay faithful to the manga without using it as a storyboard. it would be supervised by takeuchi and flesh out things that she couldn’t when she made the manga. it would include casablanca memories. it would have comedy and deformed faces. it would have top animation. it would be 2-3 movies each arc. Eternal will show how/if it works.

Just saw this today as it popped up in my recommendations. It's an okay analysis (she doesn't say anything new, nor does she make her points particularly concisely), but MY GOD. I think Rei and Usagi were the only Japanese names she pronounced correctly.

By now, I must have listened over one hundred times that Crystal is not good because it did not adapt “Casablanca Memory.” :mischief:

Of all side stories I have read, the only good ones are “Casablanca Memory” and “Lover of Princess Kaguya,” and the latter was already masterfully adapted into a film.

I love already the title of it.

Apparently Crystal fixed 6 stuffs and broke 3, still the title put the positive things in ()

some points in the article are at least

TBH, I'd rather wait with reading those Reviews until I somehow had the Opportunity to actually watch the Movie for myself. ;)
Note that the title did not use Eternal.

This is way worse than the Nostalgic Critic review. XD

"Naru's original Japanese voice actress was famous for her distinctive sounding voice. In a nod to that fact, the English voice actress delivered her lines in an equally distinctive voice."

Ive had seen plenty of anime who uses the manga as storyboard and they work, problem with SM its that is full of plotholes and a outdated story who need to be rewritten from the very beginning but sadly it seems that is never gonna happen in an anime adaptation

Yeah but are they not manga published weekly? Or more like short manga collection like 2/3 books in a movie ?
the monthly format of the manga doesn’t help in case of SM. I think back in the 90’s, it was more or less clear between the signers than Takeuchi was here to submit the main plot and main characters personalities through the manga and the anime was here to fill up the holes in her story and give life to the side characters. Just my feeling but... Crystal could have been a trustful adaptation of the manga but with expanding correctly the story.. like many books through movies or vice-versa.

To be honest 90s anime and manga had opposite issues. Anime had too much time and had to wait for Naoko's ideas to surface so they had to fill the gaps with random stories and their own plot ideas that wouldnt collide too much with Naoko's vision (see rainbow crystals or talisman search). On the other hand manga had small space and many ideas just werent developed or werent explored properly (for example Shitennou or Sailor Princesses and castles).

To be honest the best would be middle ground: 20-26 episodes to keep up a good pace and develop good ideas or change bad/unimportant ones

To be honest though wasn’t Naoko upfront about her not being happy with her own work and it being rushed in the 90’s? While I understand that she didn’t like how Toei implemented some of their changes in the anime why would she be so object now to expand on ideas to make it flow or be more comprehensible? Why, as someone who was unhappy with her original creation now insist on a strict 1:1 adaptation? Surely she herself could give creative input about how to expand and change things.
