PGSM 03 could have been GREAT if it had a budget some of the outfits are worse than cosplay. But it had a lot of good ideas. A serious alternative romantic partner for Mamoru, Naru staying relevant, Dark Mercury, the darker side of Serenity's "pure love" for Endymion, the Shittenou. Also the ballet-fu gah. Great story ideas and character development all bogged by awful choreography and costume design.

PGSM Usagi>Serena>90s anime Usagi>Manga!Usagi>Crystal!Usagi

Unless I'm talking exclusively about the viz dub I refuse to call them Sailor Guardians. They're Sailor Senshi or Sailor Soldiers when I'm talking in general terms or in reference to the live-action toku, 90s anime subbed, manga, and Crystal. Sailor Scouts when referring to the Optimum dub.

I'm sure Toei trashed the footage long ago, but if they still had all the raw green screen footage from PGSM, it would be amazing for them to re-release the series with all of the transformation, introduction speech, and attack stock sequences redone with modern, quality CG animation. The cloud backgrounds for their speeches are so cheap and stupid looking, and Sailor Moon's hair in her transformation sequence in particular is just so awful looking.

I don't get whenever we get a new version of Sailor Moon and it obviously at least starts with the Dark Kingdom storyline and fans are like "Gaah not ANOTHER Dark Kingdom retelling." Of course they're gonna start with the first *#&#*@* story arc. Do you expect them to start the story at the Infinity arc? I would have liked to have seen PGSM cover up to at least the Dream arc but I think they made a pretty good decision of sort of taking elements from later arcs and merging with the Dark Kingdom and going their own way. And Crystal did at least cover Black Moon and Infinity and will supposedly at least cover Dream

2 unpopular opinions:

1) I dislike a majority of the voices in the Viz dub; I think they all sound extremely similar. Mars, Luna, and Neptune easily pass as each other's voices, and Saturn, Venus, and Mercury sound similar as well. I love some of them though.

2) The manga isn't all that superior to the first anime. It has its fair share of moments of Senshi being underpowered and getting defeated too easily. Especially in Stars.

I'll co-sign this. The praise the Viz dub seems to get is "Well they're age appropriate now! Also Noako-SamaSenseiSempaiKami approved them!" Congratulations, they're still voices that all run together to the point when a character is talking off screen I have to use context clues to figure out which one is speaking (Well Naru is in this next-episode preview a lot maybe she's doing it with Usagi? Wait that's Luna ooooops) Stephanie Sheh is overrated just because Takeuchi chose her. She has a more appropriate for a 14-year old girl voice than Hawkes and Ballatyne going for her and that's about it. So what? Tracey Moore also had an appropriate sounding voice with the bonus that she could act. Kate Higgins is horribly miscast. Vee is either miscast or misdirected And Leigh....I actually the more I listen to her the more I think under different direction SHE could make a good Usagi/Sailor Moon. One youtuber made a sort of good point that she the youngest sounding voice which doesn't work for Minako who is suppose to be the most mature with the most life experience but it would be a good fit for Usagi who is more wide-eyed and innocent and Leigh's Super hero voice is decent.

Unless I'm forgetting anything or my counts are wrong...

Manga: Dark Kingdom | Black Moon Clan | Infinity | Dream | Stars
90s Anime: Dark Kingdom | [Makaiju] | Black Moon Clan | Infinity | Dream | Stars
90s 'Dub' (If, like myself, you view this is a separate adaptation more than as a 'dub' per se): Dark Kingdom | [Makaiju] | Black Moon Clan | Infinity | Dream
Live Action: Dark Kingdom (with elements from other arcs thrown in)
Crystal: Dark Kingdom | Black Moon Clan | Infinity | Dream (in production) | Stars ???
Musicals: DK, DK, S, S, S, S, SS, SS, SS, Stars, Stars, Stars (with a bit of DK), Stars (with a bit of DK), Stars (with a bit of DK and SS), Kaguya Island, Kaguya Island, Dracula (with a bit of S), Dracula (with a bit of SS), Dracula, Dracula, BMC, BMC, Ai no Sanctuary, S, S, Stars (with a bit of DK), Stars (with a bit of DK), Kaguya Island, Kaguya Island, DK, BMC, Infinity, Dream, Stars, DK (upcoming), ??? (2019 musical)
Musical novelizations: DK
Manga novelizations: DK (upcoming), ???

Dark Kingdom: 11 primary adaptations/incarnations (including musical revisions) (10 excluding the DiC dub) + 5 secondary adaptations (Stars musicals featuring DK characters)
Black Moon Clan/R: 7 adaptations (including musical revisions) (6 excluding the DiC dub)
Infinity/S: 11 primary adaptations (including musical revisions) (10 excluding the CWi dub) + 1 secondary adaptation (Dracula musical featuring Infinity characters)
Dream/SuperS: 7 adaptations (including musical revisions) (6 excluding the CWi dub) + 2 secondary adaptations (Stars and Dracula musicals featuring Dream characters) + 1 in production
Stars: 10 adaptations (including musical revisions; 5 of which include DK and/or Dream characters)+ 1 adaptation likely to come (Crystal)

The Black Moon Clan arc is the least adapted, barely being surpassed by Dream thanks to the in-production Crystal movies and the inclusion of some characters in two other musicals.

The Dark Kingdom and Infinity arcs are the most adapted, with the Dark Kingdom arc /technically/ being adapted more thanks to the inclusion of its primary antagonists in several of the Stars musicals, the novelization of its most recent musical adaptation, the upcoming Nogizaka46 musical, and the upcoming manga novelization. I feel like all of those barely count however since the Stars musicals are first and foremost, well, Stars musicals, the La Reconquista novel is rather obscure, and, for all we know, they could do manga novelizations of the other arcs and even N46 musicals of the other arcs. It's pretty much a guarantee that the other arcs will get more musical adaptations over the years and unless the two Dream movies for Crystal get shelved, we'll probably get a Crystal adaptation of Stars.

So yes, it's true that the DK arc has been adapted a lot. But one of those adaptations was extremely liberal, several are virtually negligible, and with at least one, it remains to be seen whether or not the other arcs will receive the same type of adaptation. So while the Dark Kingdom arc has received the live action TV series treatment that none of the others have had, it's really just surpassing the other arcs in number of adaptations through its secondary adaptations (via several Stars musicals) and novelizations (one of which is obscure, the other of which is yet to be released, may well adapt the remaining arcs in the future, and is probably not a big deal anyway). I'd argue that Infinity/S has been adapted more because none of its 11/10 primary adaptations are in the form of obscure novelizations or yet-to-be released novels or musicals.

(And yes, I know there are also the novelizations of the first season of the 90s anime that Tokyopop put out, but they didn't complete the season and perhaps if they'd been more successful they would have covered the entire anime. Scholastic put out I believe four junior novelizations of the Doom Tree arc. There are also a ton of animemanga and picture book adaptations of the 90s anime. I'm not gonna research all that and figure out how that affects the adaptation tally.)

^ All this goes back to another unpopular opinion of mine that I may or may not have already mentioned in this thread:

I feel that S/Infinity is grossly overrated, and that Uranus and Neptune are just as overrated in that story arc.

Disagree about Infinity being overrated completely agree about S being overrated. Things I dislike about S:

Look at how dark this season is! Now witness as the Sailor Soldiers fight a racing car monster, an elephant vacuum cleaner, and a door.

The final "battle" is anti-climatic. Like the MOST anti-climatic of all 5 series. Classic we had Princess Serenity combine powers with the ghost of the Guardian Soldiers. R we had Neo-Queen Serenity and Princess Serenity the III (whatever we call Chibi usa in princess mode) combining the powers of the silver crystal of past and future with the Guardian Soldiers as back-up. SuperS we had Princess Serenity jumping after to save her daughter and the use of the golden crystal. Sailor Stars naked winged sword battle with Galaxia. S.....ummm Sailor Moon uses her heart crystal as a substitute holy grail to become Super Sailor Moon and goes after Saturn into that Pharoh 90 thingie and we don't see anything....

While you got a taste of it in Classic I suppose S is this series that really kicked off the victim of the day formula the anime was infamous for. And would be used in SuperS and Sailor Stars

It went unnamed in the anime, but the manga gave us its mouthful of a name as "Princess Usagi Small Lady Serenity".

"Princess Small Lady" is probably the best shorthand descriptor for that form of hers.

I kind of agree. I like the Witches 5 and Kaolinite

In the future, her official title/name is "Princess Lady Serenity", so perhaps "Princess SL Serenity" would be a more apt moniker for when we see Chibiusa in princess mode?

Whoops! That "I kind of agree. I like the Witches 5 and Kaolinite" bit was a response to Sabrblade's post about S/Infinity being overrated that I started to write but then changed my mind. Didn't even realize it was still there when I posted my comment about "Princess Lady Serenity." ^_^'

So... Um... To finish what I was going to say... "I like the Witches 5 and Kaolinite and think there are a number of interesting plot ideas in S/Infinity, and of course I love Hotaru/Sailor Saturn, but Uranus and Neptune aren't well-developed characters, there are too many unanswered questions about them for my liking, and in the 90s anime especially I find them unlikeable. S/Infinity also isn't nearly as "dark" as some people make it out to be. It's a fun and interesting story that I think is more competently handled over all than the BMC or Stars arcs were, but I don't see how it's all that more special than the DK arc or the Dream arc."
