There are many episodes of sailor moon that SOMEHOW made it past censors, the ones with the churches, nuns, priests, and so on are the ones where i go "how did that get approved for dubbing?"

THIS show got WAY more stuff past the radar!

Its been a while since I've seen this episode, but just like with CW's dub of the SuperS episode where the sister gets attacked (one of my faves for the comic relief and a rare insight into Venus' asskicking potential), I'm sure you're probably right about it not being cut for its relevance to the plot (yay), I seem to remember them doing away with direct references to Christianity and with more ambiguous statements about peace which I like better since it is multi-faith-friendlier that way.

I'm betting either someone screwed up, or managed to bullshit the scene past.

yea animaniacs got a hell of a lot more past the censors, because when we're kids we're too stupid to even notice the references

but sailor moon is first and formost a kids show, so how something like attacking a preacher got past is mind boggling.

What was innapropriate? I don't see why attacking a preacher is worse than teachers or anyone else who got attacked.

It didn't put priest or religion in a negative light. I don't see anything controversial about it.

They were allowed to show things like the priest, the church, the nun, etc., but they just took out all the religious aspects.

So, yeah, in other words, they really went out of their way to rewrite the meanings of all this.

Maybe if they thought those references would promote Christianity instead of mocking it?

it wouldnt make sense just to add a priest for no reason in a sailor moon episode, however it was relevant because molly(dont know her japanese name) was questioning her faith whether heaven or hell did exists and if nephrite even went to either of them.

theres the fact darien, a college student is dating two minors (rei then usagi), theres the whole, neph being a pedo thing... and a stalker. mina was two timing both hawks eye and tigers eye, amonth others which i cant remember right now, but i'll notice more as i get further into the anime

I don't know was this ever officially stated, but I believe Naru practised the Shinto faith like most of the Japanese. She probably wanted to talk to a Christian priest because priests and monks of any religion are guiding and often fatherly and offer advice without second thoughts.


Maybe they used some common sense and thought that if they cut and censor the show any more, the won't have much of a show left and it certainly won't be the show it was before the changes.

neffy is about the same age as mamoru if not a bit younger, neffy is 19. and naru is that same age as usagi so it's not pedo-ish

It's nothing compared to the time 4Kids not only left in a cross in an early episode of Pokemon, Misty even CALLED IT A CROSS OUT LOUD!!!

I saw that episode.

I'm pretty sure it was "Tower of Terror". I nearly gasped when Misty held up the cross to the ghost Pokemon and said "You see this?! It's a CROSS!"

Yeah for a time, 4kids actually had balls.

If they could dub anime like Pokemon, they would have had a better reputation. The problem was that they were aiming their shows at a younger audience.

And yet Brock just loved "doughnuts". Still, Pokemon was something that 4Kids didn't really screw up on the same magnitude as, say, One Piece.

Getting back to Sailor Moon, though, I think I prefer the dub version of the scene with Naru and the priest. It just sounds much more supportive for "Molly" to be told that she's already got friends to turn to.

Yu Gi Oh is for kids but Japan is just more lenient on content than America. What's risqué and borderline "inappropriate" to us isn't a big deal to them.

My guess is that the people in charge were aging backwards, like Benjamin Button.

naru, rei and usagi are 14 and are still minors, mamoru is over 18, the age of majority. i know japan has different laws but for the US and canada, and i will assume the UK as well, its pedo-ish.

anyone watching for the first time could see mamo and be like "dude, hes 25 and hes dating a 14 year old??"

in the manga hes 18/19, and just going from highschool to college, but as far as the anime in concerned, we dont know how old he is since i dont think its ever been said, we just know hes a young adult, in university, and hes going out, with a middle schooler.

Surprised no one's mentioned anything about the dialogue I transcribed and how the dub pretty much completely botched the original meanings with sugarcoated secular ones.

He's 17/18 in the (beginning of the) manga, not 18/19. In beginning of the anime, he's gotta be at least 18 due to having his driver's license, but he could still be a first-year college student at 18. Four years isn't that great a difference.

If Nephrite's 19, then he's a bit older than Mamoru, so yeah it might seem a bit awkward to see him with Naru. But it really only seemed to be her that had those kind of feelings for him, while he didn't seem to feel as devoted to her as she was to him, but he did at least care for her. So, one could say that it was only her crushing on him while he just saw her as a good friend.
