Just a thread for miscellaneous observations of utter stupidity.

- In episode 29, Makoto at the start utters a Japanese curse word (not "kuso") which sounds like and can roughly translate to the one-that-everybody-pretty-much-knows-and-is-considered-to-be-the-worst-dirty-word-in-the-english-vocabulary word.

- Episode 78 is one of the few to have really good artwork from Masahiro Ando.

- The episode where Usagi and Hotaru are trying to meet the track-and-field guy could probably use a bit more humor - it's not like everything involving Hotaru should be absolutely serious. She is a precious snowflake with sad lore, but still.

- I love seeing some of Usagi's youthful innocence in the earlier seasons, and even showing up a couple times later.

- THE SAILOR VENUS ENTRANCE IS THE BEST THING EVER

The DiC opening from Sailor Moon aside from using footage from dub episodes: 1, 14,15,18,19,20,21,30,39,and 40 and using stock footage of the Scouts attacking, Moon using Moon Healing Activation and transforming it also uses bits and pieces from the first opening of classic and the first opening of R. But strangely doesn't use anything from the second Classic opening.

The ticking clock sound effect as Usagi tries to make excuses to not show her mom the test is retained in the DiC dub. The tinkling sound effect of Moon using Moon Healing Escalation is also retained in its first use in Jupiter's debut before get replaced by the Champion of Justice cue.

One evil music cue from the Japanese version seemed to have been recycled for the DiC dub or at least DiC did a revamped version of it

The only negative thing Naoko has said about the dub is that Serena's voice is too low.

Tracey Moore has voiced Serena in every Sailor Scout introduction episode except Venus.

The DiC dub once had different names during production.

The First Italian voice actress of Makoto left After Sailor Moon S because she disliked her character. Mamoru's voice actor from the Italian version of Sailor Moon Classic is the same of Batman in the cartoons and in the Arkham video games series. The new cast of Crystal has a lot of voice actrors from Madoka Magica and Pretty Cure.

Actually there's two:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68QnfHs6G1I

Their version didn't run as long but it was used on the first few episodes.

- Mercury use an attack called Double Bubble Spray Freezing once, and never again.

- The one-time only attack Supreme Thunder Dragon looks way too powerful than the damage it actually manages to do because formula logic.

- The first 65 dubbed DiC episodes were syndicated to WB, FOX and UPN affiliates as well as independent networks by The Program Exchange in exchange for commercial time. Other shows syndicated by the company included Beakman's World, Underdog, Rocky and Bullwinkle, NewsRadio, The Brady Bunch and Bewitched.

- The Crisis Make Up climax against Pharoh 90 was Kotono Mitsuishi's favorite scene to do.

I'd love to know what these names were. Anything would be way better than Mako-Chan Dub's name Lita lol

Serena was Victoria. Amy was Blue. Raye was Dana. Lita was Sarah and Mina was Carrie

You can watch DiC's promo reel when they were shopping the show around for a syndication deal using those original dub names here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=CEXqoPgbH0c

I'll just go with stuff from the 90s anime since manga production trivia is easier to come across.

- The shade of red on Sailor Moon's ribbons/gloves/boots/choker (and by extension the front ribbon on the juban middle school uniform) are a pink-ish or magenta tint of red, not pure red. It can be hard to tell since the footage quality in the 90s anime is all over the place, even after it was remastered. Looking at decent scans of the original cels (or Marco Albiero's images, since they use the exact same colors as them) show this alongside remastered manga illustrations.

- Kotono Mitsuishi had surgery and was hospitalized during the recording sessions for episodes 44-50 because because she actually had an ovarian cyst. Not appendicitis as is often claimed.

- Keiko Han, who voiced both Luna and Queen Beryl, asked the staff if she could have a break in-between her takes during the finale. This was because one scene would have Luna sobbing and the next would have Beryl laughing manically, so she needed to mentally prepare herself more for those totally opposite roles.

- The iconic Moon Prism Power Make Up transformation sequence was animated by the director of Trigun. If one assumes that the laserdisc extra showing the animation process used footage of the staff as they actually made it (rather than a re-enactment,) that would mean Kunihiko Ikuhara storyboarded the sequence as well. He also storyboarded Venus' transformation.

- Ikuko Itoh began to get the idea for Princess Tutu while she was working on Sailor Moon and Maho Tsukai Tai

- Hideaki Anno, the creator/director of Evangelion animated several parts of episode 103 (Sailor Chibimoon's introduction episode, directed by Kunihiko Ikuhara) and did the storyboards for Uranus and Neptune's transformation sequences. Rei Ayanami from Evangelion was also named after Rei Hino, Ikuhara's favorite character, as an attempt to get him on board with working on the show with him.

- More about Ikuhara. Anno claimed at an event that once he became the series director, there were periods of time where he would work for four whole days without any sleep.

- As someone previously noted, one of Kotono Mitsuishi's absolute favorite moments in the 90s anime was in episode 125, where Usagi is screaming "Crisis, Make Up!" to try and become Super Sailor Moon in order to enter Pharaoh 90 and save Hotaru. One of the biggest reasons for this was that the animation was going to be done *after* the recording sessions, not before. This meant that she didn't have to worry about syncing up to mouth flaps and could perform as naturally as she wanted. The animation team and the director loved her take and used it for the episode.

-Speaking of Kotono Mitsuishi's performances as Sailor Moon, one of the audio drama cassette tapes has several moments from episode 45 and 46 which included most of Usagi's memorable lines from the former re-recorded. The staff watching her in the recording booth were really impressed with her as she became so swept up in the role, she was actually sobbing and her nose was running (which is probably something that happened before with recording sessions in SM, but still. If you ever hear it, it's a chilling and heart-wrenching performance.) She said she was thinking about what both Usagi and the other girls were going through during those events. Also in the Classic season memorial, she voiced over Usagi's dying inner monologue where she reminisces her days as a normal girl and wishes to go back to them. It also sounds very heartfelt. Maybe this was sort of her making up for her absence during that time? The drama mentioned before is called "Prelude to Romance," and it's a crime nobody has ever translated it.

More stuff for the old dub

Dub episode 70: Promises Fulfilled is the first time the Sailor Team is called Sailor Soldiers rather than Sailor Scouts. The dub will inconsistently switch back and forth from Sailor Scouts and Sailor Soldiers from then on with the S dub preferring Sailor Soldiers.

Fight to the Finish is the first time Sailor Moon ends her speech with "In the name of the moon I will punish you!" Technically she first says those words in episode 2 before Luna "corrects her" and then Sailor Moon ends with "And that means you"

Lisa-Lumby Richards is the only dub writer to be credited for all 159'episodes and the three movies. She's also the only writer for the last 17 episodes of R and the movies. Both of which had two different names for Moon Princess Halation.

Sailor Moon in the United States has some of the longest hiatuses. Having been cancelled 3 times. It took 3 years after the first 65 episodes aired in 95 for US viewers to see the final 17 episodes of R (they aired in Canada a year prior) and another two years before Toonami ran the 77 episodes that made up S and SuperS. Each time Sailor Moon was "cancelled" it ended on a cliffhanger telling the viewer there is more to come. The first ending ends with Rini discovering the girls identities and Rubeus swearing revenge after losing all four of the Negamoon sisters. The second ending has the Scouts discuss the arrival of two new Sailor Scouts and a new enemy. And the last ending has season big bad Queen Nehelenia escaping.
Assuming the Viz dub of Stars is released in 2019 NA viewers will have waited 19 years since the Optimum dub of SuperS ended to see Stars in English.

Kirsten Bishop (rip) has voiced a villainess in all four of the Optimum dub series. Zoycite in Classic. Emerald in R. Kaori Knight in S and Badiane in the SuperS movie.

The 3 Usagi solo episodes that DiC skipped also happen to be the only Usagi solo episodes where Naru isn't a victim in some way.

In order to compensate for adding footage from Japanese episode 44 to the beginning of the first dub episode DiC sped up Serena's transformation sequence (among other cuts) this sped up transformation sequence got its own unique music cue that was only used once more: In the edited S movie dub when Rini transforms to Mini Moon. Ironically, the introduction of Serena's normal (and slower) transformation sequence in the following episode is preceded by Serena quipping "And make it fast!"

The show began with a preview until Queen Nehellenia's appearance where they are replaced with precaps. Sailor Stars got rid of them but then brought them back but now Usagi just narrates it to Mamoru (who has gone abroad) like a letter.

The last episode of the first episode had a next episode clip of season premiere of Sailor Moon R.

The Sailor Says began being repeated in the last episodes of R.

In the Dic dub the tiara scene transition has playing in the gem the Serenity vs Beryl fight scene.

In the S movie opening Usagi is reading the Sailor Moon manga while Minako is reading the Codename Sailor V manga.

Some of the episodes have hidden frames in them like the one in S that has a naked super deformed Usagi and a few other episodes have them too.

In Parallel Sailor Moon Kousagi's pink cat's human form looks like Chibi Chibi.

In one episode of Stars Ami is printing out lyrics to the song Danger Zone.

In the original English dub the VAs for Diamond & Sapphire and Uranus & Neptune recorded their lines together.

As for Sapphire and Diamond, Lyon Smith said that at a con last year.

A lot of fans hate the Sailor Says but at least two episodes have messages that discourage children from doing dangerous things. One in SuperS and Stars.

SuperS and Sailor Stars didn't have Sailor Says. They weren't dubbed by DiC.

No what I mean is that they put the message in the episode proper. Like this.

She did not find Makoto important or developed as the other Senshi so after her maternity leave She decided not to dub Mako anymore.

The entire English dub never aired completely in order from episode 1 to 158 in the United States. After S premiered, Toonami stopped airing the DIC dub. Eventually the series briefly returned to Cartoon Network (before Toonami) but only aired up until the Zoisite arc.

Tracey Moore was originally called in to read for Luna, but she suggested playing Serena instead.

The two main villains in the S and SS movies, Princess Kaguya and Badiane were voiced by Eiko Masuyama and Rihoko Yoshida respectively. Masuyama provided the voice for two magical girls - Mahoutsukai Chappy and Cutie Honey. Yoshida was the voice of Majokko Megu-chan and Majokko Tickle.

In the original edited English dub, only four insert songs were kept in Japanese: Sanji Yosei (SuperS movie), Azusa Nigou (Episode 99), Onaji Namida wo Wakeatte (Episode 144) and Rashiku Ikimasho(Episode 144). Two other songs Moon Revenge (R Movie) and Aino Senshi (Episode 102) were kept in the unedited versions only.

Before DiC got the license, a company called Toonmakers wanted to make a half live-action/animation remake. It was cancelled because it was too expensive compared to just dubbing the Japanese anime.

Saban had nothing to do with the above.

Sailor Says was added because of FCC rules requiring that children's programming have at lease 3 hours of education.

Until now, episode 67 was never released officially. Even the original official sub release left it out.

Alice ☹ voiced Catzi in the original dub but was replaced by Mary Long.

All 3 Serena's have also voiced care bears

The only dub attack names to not have more than one name are: Moon Healing Activation, Mars Firebird Strike, , Jupiter Thunder Dragon Crash, and Pluto Deadly Scream

The R dub is the only dub series to not have a character given a sex change by the adapters. (Though the S character in question was only an episode of the day character)

Any attempt to hide Neptune and Uranus relationship in the Cloverway dub ended up being futile not just because they did basically nothing to hide the hand touching and loving looks but when Pioneer released S uncut one VHS/DVD cover had the two in a very romantic embrace which could be seen at practically any video store by any wondering parent or child. Thus someone who had never seen the show would still probably know of "the lesbian Sailor Scouts"

The R movie dub is the first time the Moon Princess is called by her original name: Princess Serenity (and its random enough a confused dub only viewer might think Jupiter is calling out the name of Princess Serena's mother for some reason). Endymion doesn't get called by his original name until the end of the dub's run in the SuperS six part finale

Nicole Thault is the only Optimum voice director to not voice a character. Tracey Moore was of course the original Sailor Moon, Roland Parliament was Melvin, and John Stocker was Raye's grandpa.

In episode 1, while Sailor moon was fighting Morga amd her "zombie" army of humans, the bottom of Sailor Moon's front bow was colored white instead of red

OMG really? Did she ever say what exactly she hated about her?

Do you have a link to an article about this story by any chance?
She did not find Makoto important or developed as the other Senshi so after her maternity leave She decided not to dub Mako anymore.

Do you know if she has done this with other characters?
