Kodansha Japan and Naoko Takeuchi are the ones insisting on "Sailor Guardians". This is just a fan translation that decided not to adhere to that.

What happened to "Sailor Soldiers?"

PGSM happened, back in the early 2000s.

Once again the release date has been pushed back, this time to October 13, and there's still no cover art. I'm starting to wonder if this is ever going to come out...

Two push backs is already a bad sign. I'd consider not holding our breath.

Going out on a limb here, but I'm guessing there was another push back.

EDIT: Yep, now it's the 23rd of November.

I don't see it ever being released at this point. They might as well just cancel it now and get it over with.

Since that cover says "1" on it, I wonder if they plan to release the entire manga in this bilingual format? If so, since they're using the perfect edition version of the manga, it's strange that this volume just has Acts 1-6 instead of 1-7. :googly:

Why did they add an honorific? Did the previous translation leave it out? I was hoping they wouldn't be there at all. Other then that, the bumps in the road have been smoothed out and if the Eternal edition is using an even more polished version of this then we're in safe hands. I'm so glad they got rid of that dummy line and found a natural equilvelant. To say nothing of the fact that I can now understand the sound effects.

The new translation definitely reads a lot better. Hope some more pages will get posted by people who bought copies just to make sure, but this makes me hopeful about the Eternal Editions.

And how! That new translation is a striking improvement. Though, I can understand the included honorific bothering some people, but as long as the honorifics are used correctly (as in, no redundant "princess-sama" nonsense) they won't bother me as I don't mind seeing honorifics used in text form. It's only in spoken verbal form of English anime dubs that their presence bothers me.

Reading those examples, the new version does flow a bit better in English, but those particular examples still kinda don't fully sound like how Usagi (and Naru) would say those lines.

A bit of a redundant mouthful, too. Hrmm.

Those first two sentences could have easily been one.

Yeah, I'd translated it as "I'm the sailor-suited pretty soldier of love & justice, Sailor Moon!". :)

Kodansha USA have said Japan was using an early draft of their new English translation for the bilingual editions so there's still a chance this could be fixed. I agree though, it is redundant though it makes sense to use a simplified version of the script for learning English.

Couldn't they have just left it alone as "pudding" while using the translation note to explain the joke? I mean, they still used the note to explain the joke when it was "royal chocolate" anyway.

I'd rather they adapted it to something that works in English though I agree about putting the original joke in the translation notes.

Something like:
"Guardians and a princess? Wow, imagine the pudding she'd get to eat! Yum!

"Guardians and a princess? Why do I suddenly want pudding?"

"Guardians and a princess? Hmm, what else begin with P? Ohh pudding! Yum!"

Very happy to hear they're using "Evil Spirits, Begone" and that those eyesore quotation marks around Mystical/Legendary Silver Crystal are a thing of the past.

I actually kind of liked "royal chocolate" so changing it to "princess cake" is a bit weird, but like Sabr said, they should have just translated the dialog faithfully and included a note explaining the joke.

Or they could have Usagi mistake "Princess" for "Pringles"

It's now "Evil Spirit, Begone!"

Upon taking another look at this page, I've noticed two things:

- They didn't bother to retouch the image after they erased the Japanese text. Look at the area around "Is it an evil spirit?"

- On the opposite page, I can see that they left "Hikawa Jinja" untranslated rather then "Hikawa Shrine", which Kodansha USA translated it to. Maybe they wanted all place names to be completely in Japanese.

Oh dear, I had no idea there was this much dispute over translations, although I shouldn't really be surprised.

The only version I own real copies of are the Kodansha ones that started coming out back in 2011 or so. I did always think "Legendary Silver Crystal" in quotes sounded awkward, and I know 'Legendary' isn't necessarily the best translation for 'Maboroshi' (in my own writing I've been going with 'Phantom', but I'm no linguist so I don't know if that's best either). I've also compared the MissDream translations, but previous forum talk suggests MissDream has some problems too. I've also read some of the Mixx/Tokyopop versions but those seemed the be the worst of the three.

How badly does the actual story get messed up in those, beyond extremely subtle stuff? I may need to look into new versions, maybe the ones Sabrblade suggested. But I don't think I want to re-buy the books I own for these new versions even if I eventually have the money to spare (especially if they left out the color inserts this time). I haven't been collecting new things much period for a couple years due to poverty problems.

I've always kind of winged it on what translations to use for anything though. Same goes for the anime; I've seen a mash-up of ADV (mostly ADV), ViZ, and the fan translations KAA, [SMC], and FoT&A-W. And a bit of the DiC dub, but that's too different a beast to even compare. As for Sailor Moon: Another Story, it's only got one translation, and as for the PC Engine game, the ONLY translation I've found is one playthrough on youtube kind of spitballing the translation for one playthrough of one arc as he went...

Maybe people should stop re-re-translating the manga and translate the PC Engine game. I'd definitely be willing to pay for a copy of that, if it was affordable. Even just a plaintext script or subtitled video footage, since romhacking it into the game is probably too difficult.

The Kodansha version doesn't have any huge translations errors as far as story go. (biggest I recall hearing about was Chibi-usa saying she couldn't say "how many Silver Crystals I tried", when she was originally speaking in a hypothetical sense) It's more issues that affect readability, like stilted dialogue and the occasional wrong attack name.

As far as the new version goes, huge improvement. Even though it's not perfect, I'll gladly double-dip on the earlier volumes. But I'm not sure I'll replace the latter volumes that the second translator did. I actually thought the translation of those volumes was pretty good, so I doubt there'll be much of a difference.

I, too, will gladly triple-dip (I have the both the Tokyopop and original Kodansha translations already), but only once the prices have dropped to something reasonable. $25 for a volume of a 25+ year old manga that I already own two copies of? GURL PLEASE!

Comparing the different English translations of manga is one of my hobbies. That's why I've made a blog on it.

The Eternal Editions would be an instant preorder for me if it came out that the honorifics had been translated to English. If they're still in Japanese, then I'll wait for a price drop too.

One of the earlier Kodansha translated versions of Act 10 misinterpreted Jupiter's "Tsukino Usagi/Tsuki no Usagi" joke as her instead literally spotting a rabbit up on the moon, when said rabbit was supposed to just be Usagi as a rabbit, as part of a visual illustration of Jupiter's pun.

My copy came in today so let me know if anybody wants a specific line compared before Christmas where I'll regift it to my niece whose learning Japanese at school.

Here's a few more things:

- Rei is referred to as a "Shinto priestess" the first time by Usagi and then a "priestess" from then on as opposed to a "miko" which the 2011 English release called her.

- The "Demon 6.00PM Bus" is now called the "Six o'clock Demon Bus".

- Makoto's "rice ball" is now a "takikomi rice ball".

- There is no instance of Motoki being referred to as "Bro" or "Onii-san". Usagi doesn't refer to him as anything until she learns his name though she does call him the "Arcade guy" once after.

- Kodansha's 2011 release called Usagi's weapon the "Moon Stick", but Kodansha Bilingual calls it the "Moon Wand".

Dammit! Moon Stick sounded so awkward in the redub and Crystal! Moon Wand would have been a mild improvement.
