Last night I came across a website that uses deep learning algorithms to automatically colorize black and white images. I thought it would be fun to use it to colorize some pages of the manga:

Thoughts? Has anyone else tried one of these sites before? Anyone want to run some other manga pages through the site and see how it turns out?

Give the technology a couple more years to further improve and Toei will probably use it to color all their new anime!

ETA: A couple more pages:

Here are my thoughts: I absolutely love these colorings of the manga.

I'd love it if someone would take a clip from the anime, convert it to B&W, separate the individual frames, run them through the colorizer, and then reassemble the clip so we could see what it would look like. I'd try doing it myself but I'm not sure how to go about it?

These are seriously beautiful and hypnotic. I would buy the manga all over again for a colorized version exactly like this.

EDIT: Here's my first try. It's so abstract and weird!

I love this! Abstract Sailor Moon is the best Sailor Moon

We should get organized and colorize all the manga using this site.

How do you get your colors to stay in the lines without bleeding all over the page? Maybe I'm just using one of the settings...

Sooner or later AI could generate/create entire manga works too, which'd also be tailored to the market w/ great precision. :)

Trial and error. If I see there's an area where a color is bleeding into that I don't want, I add the 'right' color to that area.

And it seems that it's learnt that quite well.

I would actually be very willing to do something like this with this site. It would require a lot of teamwork and communication, though. Like "Minako is wearing the same clothes from one chapter to the next, do we let the colors bleed around and be random or do we try to be consistent?" Or "Each person is responsible for a different chapter and they can do whatever the **** they want"? Or maybe "Some chapters should be more realistic while others can be more ethereal and dreamy"? There are a lot of things to consider depending on how many people want to do it and what the project would look like.

I would say everyone can pick a chapter and do whatever they want with it. They can make the pages as realistic or as dreamy, as consistent or as random as they like. A fan project such as this should be a way for each of us to realize our version of a colorized manga. One great big abstract hodgepodge. But that's just my idea. Let's see if anyone else is interested and what they'd like to do.

It would be nice to use scans of the Perfect Edition since those would be of the highest res. I was able to get Acts 1-6 of Miss Dream's scans off the Wayback Machine, but I don't have the rest, so either someone else would be willing to contribute those or we'd have to use scans from MD's scanlation of the first revised manga.

I'd also say that, if possible, text should be removed from the pages first since they seem to throw off the program a bit and you just end up with smudged looking text anyway.

I see the little Artemis and Minako image up top is now in color. Was that done via this colorization site or is that change completely unrelated? :? :P

You may notice the Genvid logo was removed and replaced with SAILORMOON FORUMS + SUBURBAN SENSHI. Xadium colorized it and changed the logo as part of his ownership of the site. It's probably going to be only noticeable change for a good while.
