Inspired from the Belief Systems and the Internet thread as we headed towards a new direction.

People seem to think the internet is the perfect place to do whatever you want, whenevwer you want, however you want. The one place (or so I thought) is believed to provide anonymity for one's rudeness and freedom to express oneself.

Howeve I discovered the phenomenon of "Internet Violence"-where not only are death threats and statements by other users wishing you would be harmed or killed are sent to you, but people will actually hunt you down and physically hurt you. To repeat examples I posted from the Beliefs System and the Internet thread.

Guy literally travels over 1000 miles just to burn down someone else's trailer after an internet argument escalates.

And most recently I leard that sexual violence like rape do happen as a result of interecting with others online.

I no longer use the internet much as I used to.

Just use it sensibly to protect yourself from those situations you linked above, & it'll be mostly, if not 100%, fine. :)

Unfortunately even with proper precautions taken there are idiots out there who will literally track down your IP to the last digit and find where you live and plan whatever. You'd be amazed how easy it would be to spot people at least here in the US.

That's why I said "mostly." An overwhelming majority of net users don't encounter the aforementioned situations, which affect only a tiny minority, & you can also greatly reduce your chances of falling into that minority by acting sensibly. Nothing is guaranteed, of course, just as one could be killed in traffic accidents (& many people are killed in them around the world everyday, too, but they still constitute a tiny minority of all road users). :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rape_statistics

During 2010 there were some 468,000 murders and some 250,000 rapes on the planet. Maybe ten cases out of these thousands indeed happened due to Internet communications.

If you'll get murdered, there is a 99,999% chance of it happening in a street while walking with your dog, and only 0,001% chance of being mudered for your Internet activities (about the same as being bitten by a zombie, I guess). But the chance is still out there, right?

Speaking of zombies... http://forums.ohinternet.com/showthread ... ipe-wrench

I can bet that the total amount of people eaten by zombies IRL is way above Internet murders. So instead of wasting your time to hide your online identity, better prepare for a zombie apocalypse - it's a somewhat more real threat in this world. P-:

Yikes :/ The first one is just ridiculous...travelling and spending so much just to burn down someone's trailer overseas? Wow...
I understand how angry she must've felt, but doing something that could end you in hot water with the law is stupid and dangerous. Sometimes you just want to pay back someone, but doing something dangerous or murdering someone is just WRONG all over. Murder is murder and never justified, it is just WRONG in my eyes.

I've heard of things like a guy murdered his mother or something over the farmville game or something like that...that's just bonkers.....gosh..an internet game to murder someone?

Oh no, not this again. :P

Occasions like that are OFC fairly possible, but I wouldn't worry too much about it. Did you know that most accidents happen home and pretty ☹ many people die because of very quotidian resons - Finns trip on a icy street and hit their head, the Japanese hit their heads on each others heads when the busy salarymen do the greeting too fast. Result: broken skulls and dead people. Those are more likely ways top die than getting murdered by a random German psycho. :|

And some recent news have indicated so.
