Wasn't going to buy because I used to own the Pioneer DVD & Bandai Visual Blu-ray and didn't care for that dub too much but now, you darn right I am.

•Akira (DVD) - $24.98 (Retail) - 11/12/13
•Akira (Blu-ray / DVD Combo) - $34.98 (Retail) - 11/12/13

Quote:
This 25th Anniversary Edition features all three English dubs!

Special Features: Akira Sound Clip (1988), Music for Akira, Director Interview (subtitled), Storyboard Collection, The Writing on the Wall, Original Trailers (subtitled), Original Commercials (subtitled), Restoring Akira, Glossary, U.S. 2013 Trailer, Trailers.

Spoken Languages: English, Japanese, English subtitles.

Nobody's sure what the third dub is so I'm waiting for FUNi to confirm this.

As for the extras, it looks like they got some of the extras from Pioneer's special edition DVD set (link to cover with list) along with some new ones. Not bad, this gives me a good reason not to buy that set again and just get FUNi's by itself.

Edit: According to FUNi, Right Stuf botched it. ^_^'

Update!

Subtitles = Same as Pioneer's DVD, better than Bandai's Blu-ray & DVD (since those two discs had dubtitles).

MarcFBR wrote:
These show what the subtitles displayed from each release.

(4:45)
Bandai BD & DVD/Pioneer Dub: Punks!
Pioneer DVD: Kids these days...
FUNimation BD & DVD: School kids these days... (this appears when the counter is roughly at 4:49 on the Funi BD)

(1:10:25)
Bandai BD & DVD/Pioneer Dub: Are you Tetsuo... or someone else?
Pioneer DVD: You are Tetsuo... Aren't you?
FUNimation BD & DVD: You are Tetsuo... Aren't you? (about 1:10:23)

(1:46:00)
Bandai BD & DVD/Pioneer Dub: Heads up, Tetsuo!
Pioneer DVD: Tetsuo!
Funimation BD & DVD: Tetsuo! (about 1:46:07)

Though it's mostly a copy & paste of Pioneer's disc with a couple of tweaks (like that first line), this is a HUGE step up from the lazy work they did on the Tenchi Muyo OVAs. They actually put some effort in making this better than both of Bandai's discs and quality-wise, better than Pioneer's DVDs so anyone who want a near-perfect release with both dubs & good subs can get this one.

EDIT:

Here are some comparisons between Bandai Visual's 2009 Blu-ray & FUNimation's new disc.

BV | FUNi
BV | FUNi
BV | FUNi

There's two: One from 1989 (first distributed by Streamline), and one from 2001 (first distributed by Pioneer).

The newer one is quite a bit better in it's script and voice acting, as well as sound mixing. The 1989 dub is very dated in it's casting choices (some choices are just strange), and SOUNDS like an old dub. It has many talented voice actors, but many of them under-act or over-act, and the performances lack subtlety (they also had several voice actors play multiple roles). The script is also very confusing, and makes the film difficult to understand. While the 2001 dub isn't perfect, it's quality is much more on par with other dubs of the time, and it holds up very well (it's about as good as, say, Bleach's dub and has many voice actors from it). There are a lot of people nostalgic for the 1989 dub though if they watched the film in the 90s, where it was pretty popular here, I do recommend the 2001 dub more.

Depending on how good you are with voice actors, the original dub's cast had Cam Clarke, Jan Rabson, Lara Cody, Tony Pope, Barbara Goodson, Bob Bergen, Melora Harte, Steve Kramer, and Lewis Lemay.
The newer dub has Johnny Yong Bosch, Joshua Seth, Wendee Lee, Jamieson Price, Michelle Ruff, Michael Lindsay, Simon Prescott, Robert Axlerod, Cody MacKenzie, Sandy Fox, Robert Bucholtz, and Matt Mercer.

•Akira (Blu-ray / DVD Combo) - 124 minutes - $39.98 (Retail) - 6/6/17

This item includes a premium Collector's Case, Blu-ray and DVD, and a 32 page full-color booklet for the true Akira fan.

Special Features: Akira Sound Clip (1988), Director Interview, Storyboard Collection, The Writing on the Wall, Original Trailers, Original Commercials, Restoring Akira, Glossary, U.S. Trailer (2013), Trailers

Same discs as the previous release, not a fan of steelbook cases myself but I might bite on this one if the booklet is any good.

EDIT: Another look at the case along with the booklet.

Image

Judging by the spine, this doesn't look like a steelbook at all but of a metalpak.

EDIT 2: About the booklet, judging by the above pic and this, it looks to be the same content as on the BV Blu-ray which I guess is good because that was originally a first press exclusive.

Funimation must be desperate to make a quick buck off of this to charge $40 for a movie literally every anime fan has already seen.
