Viz Media announced at its industry panel at New York Comic Con on Friday that it has licensed the 2011 Hunter × Hunter anime. The company plans to release the series on Blu-ray and DVD, and will dub the series into English.

The second television anime adaptation of Yoshihiro Togashi's Hunter × Hunter manga premiered in Japan in 2011 and ran for 148 episodes.

Crunchyroll streamed the series as it aired. The series retold the story of Togashi's original manga from the beginning. The story follows Gon Freecs as he strives to become a Hunter in order to find his father and to find the reason why his father abandoned him as a baby to become a Hunter.

Togashi launched the series in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1998, and Viz Media published the manga's 32nd volume in English last April. The manga has been on hiatus since August 2014. The manga has also inspired an earlier TV series in 1999-2001, two anime films in 2013, and several OVAs. Viz Media also released the original anime series on DVD.

My thoughts on this show from another thread.

2011-2014 anime series = Best anime remake ever!

So glad I didn't let my old grudge stop me from watching this one because I'll be honest, I did not like the 1999-2001 series very much because it bored me for the most part (and it's from the Rurouni Kenshin director who's only good works is that show's original Kyoto arc & the first OVA, Trust & Betrayal) plus the dub of it was awful and it's from a studio & cast who I have defended in the past over other dubs (Blue Water Studios, who dubbed the last Megaman X games, My-HiME, G Gundam, Pretty Cure & others) so why they botched this one I have no idea but it is what it is I guess.

A shame that Viz never licensed any of the OVAs and it sucks even more because the first OVAs was needed to end the first anime's Yorknew arc but their 4 TV box sets apparently didn't sell well so I guess it's understandable, especially since they let the anime's license expire with those sets currently being out of print.

Back to the 2011 show, the first few arcs were great, Yorknew was a mixed bag (though this might change if I watch it again), enjoyed Greed Island, LOVED Chimera Ant (though I admit that I didn't care for some of the minor characters), and the Election arc was good. This series is up there with Yu Yu Hakusho as one of the best long-running shonen anime shows and I'll go as far as saying it's THE best long-running anime (without any breaks) in recent years.

I'll be looking forward to buying all of this, hope they get a good dub cast since it'll be done in Los Angeles & not Calgary this time.

AHHH! What a pleasant surprise. I can't wait to pick this up, and hopefully the dub will be better this time around.

Announced at C2E2:

https://twitter.com/NebsTV/status/711309127314776065

Gon Freecss - Erica Mendez
Killua Zoldyck - Cristina Vee
Leorio - Matthew Mercer
Hisoka - Keith Silverstein

No Kurapika or the studio yet, those will probably get announced at Anime Boston on Saturday.

Here's a (very) short clip from the panel.

Cast looks really promising so far, and I'm liking what I heard from the clip. ^_^ I'm surprised they announced Hisoka's VA before Kurapika's though. :P Not only is the latter a main cast member, but he's the one we heard in the clip, not Hisoka. XD

He hinted it a while back but to see it confirmed is good so there shouldn't be any problems with the Blu-ray sets when those come out.

I had started watching the first few episodes of Hunter x Hunter awhile back but never got around to watching more but I might just wait for the Toonami broadcast now.

Super excited for the Toonami premiere! :D After finishing the 1999 anime (which I loved), I had slowly been working my way through the 2011 anime. (which I'm also loving) But at this rate, I think I might just stick to the Toonami broadcasts. :)

I love the 1999 series, but the English dub...wasn't as good as it could've been. (at least based on the clips I've seen) I'm happy to finally have a good English dub for Hunter x Hunter. :)

And the good voice of Bang Shishigami in the BlazBlue games.

Nothing against Steve Kramer but of the few replacements VAs made for the games after first Continuum Shift, he as Bang is the worst one and we're stuck with him. -_-

As for the Viz cover, it reminds me a bit of the first 1999 set.

Wonder if Leorio will get his own cover this time? :P

Speaking of 1999, someone posted a comparison of both dub casts on Twitter.

A look at the first set:

So in addition to the steelbook using the second Japanese volume's cover art, they used the first volume for the regular edition & DVD's case, that's pretty cool and it will only get interesting for later volumes once they get to the later arcs because Japan dropped the singles after 8 volumes (which had episodes 1-26, excluding the 2 recaps) and went straight to box sets starting with the Heaven's Arena arc so there might not be much to use if they continue with the different covers for the steelbooks.

Here are the remaining Japanese covers (with the last 2 being for the movies): http://imgur.com/jYnJRc1

The English cast interview is with Erica Mendez & Cristina Vee taped from Anime Expo this past July (those who watched the Sailor Moon panel might recognize their outfits and Cristina having lighter hair at the time) and is 6 minutes long.

So they're sorta repeating what Japan did when they switched from 3-episode singles to 12-episode box sets because Viz is releasing bigger sets now with 24-episodes in this one, surprised they're keeping the prices the same as set 2.

The cover & disc artwork matches the Heaven's Arena and I believe both Yorknew box sets which was expected but surprising that they didn't use a front cover this time for the case art.

EDIT: The price is a typo, the DVD is $15 more and the BD is $20 more.

ANN wrote:
Viz Media announced at Comic-Con International on Thursday that it has licensed the Hunter × Hunter: Phantom Rouge anime film. It will release the film in spring 2018.

Viz Media also announced the following cast members for the Greed Island Arc of the Hunter x Hunter anime series:

Biscuit Krueger: Tara Sands
Genthru: Todd Haberkorn
Nostrade: Beau Billingslea
Melody: Dorothy Fahn

Viz Media describes the Hunter × Hunter: Phantom Rouge film:

A tale of friendship, betrayal and vengeance based on the hit Shonen Jump series!

Once there was a small tribe of people called Kurta lived in a lush and beautiful forest. One day, a group of bandits known as the Phantom Brigade attacked and killed the entire population but one. Their quest was to obtain the eyes of the Kurta people; eyes that turn a brilliant red when excited. Known as the Eyes of Rouge, this color is considered one of the seven most exquisite hues in the world. The sole survivor is none other than a boy named Kurapika. To avenge his people, he has become a Hunter.

The film opened in Japan in January 2013, and ranked #1 on its opening weekend.

Viz Media licensed the 2011 Hunter × Hunter anime, and has thus far released two Blu-ray Disc and DVD sets with an English dub. Adult Swim's Toonami block began airing the anime in April 2016.

Crunchyroll streamed the series as it aired. The series retold the story of Yoshihiro Togashi's original manga from the beginning. The story follows Gon Freecs as he strives to become a Hunter in order to find his father and to find the reason why his father abandoned him as a baby to become a Hunter.

Togashi launched the series in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1998, and Viz Media published the manga's 32nd volume in English in April 2014. The manga recently returned from a hiatus on June 26. Shueisha published the manga's 34th volume in Japan on the same day. Before that, the manga had been on hiatus since June 2016. The manga has also inspired an earlier TV series in 1999-2001, the Hunter × Hunter: Phantom Rouge and Hunter × Hunter -The Last Mission- films in 2013, and several OVAs. Viz Media also released the original anime series on DVD.

Viz Media also revealed that the first episode of the 2011 Hunter × Hunter anime will be available for viewing for free on iTunes and other electronic sell-through platforms for a limited time starting at 5:00 p.m. today.

Good to know they're looking to get everything for this series and it wouldn't surprise me at this point if they announce The Last Mission when Toonami is at the Chimera Ant arc.

Speaking of Toonami, Greed Island officially starts this coming Saturday so I'll be back to watching the block again.
