Section 23's Kraken Releasing announced at the Monsterama convention in Atlanta this past weekend that it has licensed the original live-action tokusatsu series GARO and plans to release it in 2017. The company also plans to release other installments in the GARO franchise.

Kraken Releasing describes the story:

For thousands of years, mankind has been under attack by an ancient race of demons, nightmarish creatures that feed off the darkness in men's souls and enter our world seeking bodies to possess. Against these Horrors, the human race has just one hope: the enchanted weapons and armor of the Makai Knights, a secret legion of warriors, priests and magic users who stand as humanity's last line of defense.

The first 25-episode series premiered on October 7, 2005 and has spawned multiple live-action films and television series.

The Garo the Animation and Garo: Crimson Moon television anime aired in 2014 and 2015, respectively, and FUNimation Entertainment streamed both series. Funimation released the first series on home video this year. Garo: Divine Flame, a film sequel to Garo the Animation, opened in Japan in May.

Kraken Releasing - Another label from the former ADV Films (just like Sentai Filmworks, Maiden Japan and others). This one was formed in 2014 and previously re-released a few Godzilla movies prior to this.

THIS is a surprise since as mentioned here in the past about PGSM, Japanese live-action shows rarely get picked up for sub releases here because of different reasons (mostly related to the actors) and after FUNimation picked up the anime, I thought that was it. I guess (not) Sentai looked at how the Super Sentai DVDs have been doing for Shout Factory and how Ultraman has been doing for Crunchyroll and decided to jump in getting this show and FUNi getting both anime shows may have also been a reason.

Either way, very glad to know that it got picked up, I watched the first 3 seasons back in 2013 and other than the third season not being as good, I enjoyed the first 2 along with the movies & specials that I was able to see then.

Their hint of having other parts of Garo has me believing that they also have the other seasons so hopefully they do, especially since the second season, Makai Senki, is a sequel to the first one (with the same main characters) and was great too.

EDIT: I'll be adding updates for the anime which FUNi has so here's the first series:

This series has some beautiful costumes and creepy kaijin designs. It's definitely not your papa's tokusatsu series.

All that's left of the anime now is the movie sequel of the first series.

And the wait for the live-action show continues...

FINALLY!

A bit surprised it's Blu-ray only and that it's cheap (Right Stuf currently has it for $26) but then again, it confirms even more that it's the HD-remaster that aired in Japan last year so I'll be looking forward to buying this.

Section23 Films announced in its February release slate on Thursday that its Kraken Releasing label will release Garo: Kiba - The Dark Knight! (Kiba ~Ankoku Kishi Gaiden~) on Blu-ray Disc on February 20.

Kraken Releasing describes the story:

He was born the child of a Makai Knight and a Makai Priestess. He trained to become a Makai Knight and fight the nightmarish creatures known as Horrors. Everything changed when the forces of evil intervened and stole everything he loved, the man who was once named Barago turned to a darker path. Learning to hate everything he once cherished, and twisting his oaths and armor to a new, sinister purpose, he makes a monstrous bargain with the ultimate Horror and betrays the Makai Knights! Now, in a spectacular stand-alone side adventure, the dark Genesis of one of GARO's most formidable villains is revealed in GARO: KIBA - THE DARK KNIGHT!

The 50-minute spinoff special debuted as an original video project in 2011. Kraken Releasing also released the first 13 episodes of the original 2005 live-action Garo series on Tuesday.
