Everyone has and is entitled to their own opinions but I just don't see why anyone likes this. I thought it was dumb. The hair colors are iconic and special to each character.

This story is a fantasy about teenagers who can transform into superheros, talk to cats and breathe in outer space (based on the story they are technically aliens since they aren't originally from Earth so I can give on this one). We don't need the realism of the hair changing issue. Trying to make a fantasy story realistic really worked for DragonBall .

I don't know why the hair changing thing irks me so much but it does (and to the people that like the hair changing thing- I hope I didn't upset anyone, I'm just saying how I feel). ^_^'

The hair-changing works in PGSM because it's live-action and it's supposed to take place in a world that should be believable. Weird hair colors seem to work just fine in anime, and the musicals pull them off pretty well (in most cases). But for a live-action TV show, which is much more grounded in reality than the musicals are, it makes more sense to have the hair color switch thing. We DO need that realism in a TV show, it's meant to be more directly relatable than both the anime and the musicals (and the manga, for that matter).

That said, they shouldn't re-introduce it in a new anime...I don't think that would make much sense. They're fine in anime form.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thinks the hair-changing wouldn't work in animation. Like I said before, this isn't Pretty Cure, and changing their iconic appearances in order to do so will only make it look like a ripoff of it.

I did like the idea when I was younger because I wanted an explanation for crazy natural hair colors such as blue or green or pink. And they're NOT aliens, they're "reincarnations of aliens", so they should abide to the rules of the Earth, at least when not transformed ^_^' . But that being said... in time I learned that pink hair, for example, is not something shocking in anime. It's just a sort of "color-coding for our convenience", if you will. Sure, if it were live-action, blue hair would be odd, but in the anime world... everything works. Add to that what Seen said about Pretty Cure, and maybe it's better if they just let the girls have their traditional, already well-known, hair-colors.

That's why I find the blue hair in the civilian form of Sailor Luna odd  (not to mention her tail XD ).

There were 2 instances when :rei: and :mihiru: in S where they changed their hairstyle but unfortunately due to time and budget reasons their original hairstyle is set to default. I would have wanted to see them in senshi form in a different hairstyle just for a change of pace.

Usagi and Chibiusa have both been seen with their hair hanging down without the odango or ponytails in some scenes at their house. like when getting ready for bed, bathing, or waking up. And in the episode where Minako comes over to cheer up Usagi after Mamoru's abduction, when Minako's brushing Usagi's hair.

Usagi's also had her hair curled up in such episodes as the Gym Shapely episode and the Lake Monster episode.

Someone we've NEVER seen with their hair down is Makoto/Sailor Jupiter.
That's something I'd like to see in the anime.
She's always got her hair in that ponytail.
If someone can find me a picture of her with her hair down I'll be very impressed.
But to my knowledge it's never happened.

Not true. Her hair was down in that episode where everyone was sick.

What I meant was the animators needed to change their hairstyle in senshi form when the characters did change their hairstyles for that specific situation/episode/scene which the animators didn't for reasons I already mentioned. I don't recall any of those scenes of :usagi: and :chibiusa: having a need to transform with their hair down like that picture of :mihiru: with a pony tail from which they should have kept her ponytail once she's transformed. Are these SuperS episodes? Do you have any pictures of those scenes? I'd like to document those in photobucket.

I do remember the one with :minako: and also she had :usagi:'s hairstyle just to fool Kaorinite.

I need to rewatch that episode.

Edit 1:
Forgot to mention :ami:. There are certain scenes where her hair looks a little longer.

Edit 2:
This is rare.

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that their faces are drawn to a near identacle level so the individual hairstyles help define who they are individually. Changing that too often could have been confusing for the non-regular viewer as to who was who.

Honestly, they're not going to mess with any of the five original sailor soldiers' designs.

They haven't been releasing new merchandise based on the old designs out of charity, they're doing it because they want to prepare everyone for the new anime. Imagine a kid buying one of those Sailor Moon mugs, only to discover Usagi with brown hair in the new anime? It wouldn't be a smart marketing move.

Funny! :D BTW, Rika, Ami's actress in PGSM, loves doing that hairstyle at the left (she does it w/ a loose odango, tho). :)

Okay, maybe this is going to sound cheesy but the fanboy in me would love to see a Sailor Earth and Sun. I know Mamoru is the guardian of the Earth but a fan boy can dream. :) of course I wouldn't wanna mess with the original manga storyline but if it kept going past the stars arc, what the hell?

As I've said here lately, just let Mamoru transform into Sailor Earth, a la how the Three Lights transform into the Sailor Starlights. :P

And as it'd turn out, Usagi is a bi, so she's actually overjoyed by that! P-:

Compare episodes 124 and 125, both Ikuko Itoh episodes, to episode 127, which is an Ando episode. BIIIIIG difference.

There's also this handy guide to show who directed the animation for each episode. Looks like Imgur resized it since it's a really large file, but you can mostly make out the names.

I didn't like Ando's proportions for sure but he had decent animation I GUESS. HOWEVER, Machiaki Sugimoto's characters (particularly Usagi) looked very off model, imo

Oh wow you're absolutely right. He makes them all a bit more round doesn't he? Also the animation in general in 127 is less fluid.

Katsumi Tamagai has come a long way between R and becoming the Animation Director of Sailor Stars, wouldn't you guys say? I would be okay if they brought her, Ikuko Itoh, Miho Shimogasa, and Mari Tominaga back for animating :)

Yeah, SuperS has the best art, & the character designs have got an upgrade in that season, too - it's not my most favorite season, but I do recognize that. :)

It's not going to look exactly like anything we've seen before now that all anime is colored digitally. It would be nice to have some of the veteran animators involved in some capacity but in all likelihood we'll have some newer faces this time around. Let's just hope the animation actually has some dimension to it. I can't stand how flat cartoons look these days. Almost like coloring books.

I was just browsing deviantart and something like this would be the PERFECT art style for the New Sailor Moon anime. A fantastic blend of the Anime + Manga design.
