As a collector, I, personally, prefer licensed merchandise. That's just me. However, like many collectors, and buyers, I feel like bootleg merchandise is a slap in the face. This thread is going to be dedicated to pointing out bootleggers of SAILOR MOON ITEMS ONLY. To keep it as an AWARENESS thread and not a BASHING thread, lemme drop some rules in this peace:

1. What is considered a bootleg?
Any item being sold that is intentionally being passed off as the real deal. Intentionally trying to rip off Bandai and Toei.

Example- DVDs, SH Figuarts Sailor Moon Figure

2. What is not considered a bootleg?
Any item, such as a cosplay prop or hand made jewelry, that does not try to pass their product off as official merch. This has caused a bit of a tug-o-war, so to speak, in the past. However, I have never seen someone sell off a handmade cosplay item as a licensed product. Also, people who create SM inspired jewelry. They don't claim it's licensed, they don't claim it's legit merch, and they deny affiliation with Bandai or Toei.

Example- KumaCrafts, jewelry and prop maker.

3. What do I do?
Say you see someone selling a bootleg item, like the SH Figuarts Figures, take a screenshot of the item and who is selling it. Under no circumstances is anyone allowed to harass this seller. I've said this before- The best way to hurt a bootlegger is to not buy from them.

Spotting a Bootleg

A) One of the easiest ways to spot a bootleg is if there is a Toei licensing sticker isn't present. Here is what the Toei Stickers look like:
**Note- They often come in different colors
Image
***Not all licensed merchandise will have the Toei sticker, but for the most part, it will.

A-2) Fake Toei Stickers
Yep. That's the sad reality we live in. Here is more information:
Real vs Fake Toei Stickers

B) It just doesn't look right. There's something off about it. The painting is junky, the faces look weird, it's all distorted.
**Note- Some figures... are actually like that, BUT NOT ALL OF THEM.
Image
***This is curtesy of one of my favorite tumblr's "SailorMoonBootlegs"

C) My Eternal Tier is pink? I thought it was white? Why does it play ChibiMoon's Pink Sugar Heart Attack music?
**I... actually owned this. I got it in a lot, along with its counterpart- ChibiMoon's Heart Rod. ChibiUsa's bootleg is the ONLY one I actually like. I would not have purchased it alone, but a lot is a lot is a lot. They were complete rips of the Sailor Moon World release of the toys.
***If it says Magic Stick- Run
Image
*Image curtesy of Prinsesaian.

This isn't a place to post photos of bootleg merch for fun. There is another thread for that HerRRree

These are just a few ways to spot bootlegs. You have to use your judgment, do your research, and just be mindful of what you buy.

Just out of curiosity, how can one tell that is a fake Toei sticker?

That is an amazingly good question. I found some info on it and will add it to the main thread.

Edit: I added a helpful link.

Can garage kits be fake?

I have seen some bad ones. I wonder if they look bad because they are fake or because of the questionable colors and/or painting.

Well, there are a lot of bootlegs you have to look really closely to distinguish from the real deal.

Here's a box for a certain familiar looking blond haired, blue eyed super heroine. It might be hard to tell, but see if you can determine if its a bootleg or not.

^ That's too easy to tell. XD It's not a garage kit, tho.

In most cases you can't tell it easily from photos of the completed kits, since they're simply "reprinted" from the legi ones. Such fakes are commonly seen & produced in various places around East Asia, like Taiwan & Thailand, among others.

The problem here is you have to expect buying a re-cast anyway. Much of the time a re-cast figure kit is just as good as getting the original, which due to their extremely low productions runs are normally ☹ near impossible to get.

With Resin kits, it's pretty hard to even expect a licensed one. Nearly all those kits (not all, but mostly all) are produced by fan sculptors and are always unlicensed. Very rarely have I ever seen an officially licensed resin figure kit.

With Vinyl Kits, it's a bit easier. The box will have all the accouterments of being licensed - official full color artwork on the box. Pieces will be molded in color. If they're all gray color vinyl pieces and a photo glued to the outside of the box, likely it's a re-cast. Elfin is a Korean brand of re-cast vinyl kits, but they're usually so inexpensively priced, it's not work complaining about.

Does it really matter that figure kits can be re-cast? Not really. It's all about the hobby and making a piece of art.

The only other officially licensed kits you'll find will be made from injection molded plastic.

^ Nowadays using a 3D scanner & printer you can reprint your own recast kits, too. lol

I have one that I noticed with the Petit Chara figures: bootleg figures of the first series give Luna and Artemis pink and yellow crescent moon bases, respectively, that match the plastic bases of the Sailor Characters they come with, while the official release gives them clear bases

Are the zero figures and S.h. Figuarts on eBay fakes? Or does anyone have an idea of how to tell? The price on ebay compared to Amazon would suggest yes but thought I would ask.

Yes, there are bootlegs of the S.H. Figuarts and Figuarts Zero figurines on eBay. From what I can tell, only Sailor Moon (both S.H. and Zero versions), Sailor Mercury (only S.H.), and Sailor Mars (only S.H.) figurines have bootlegs right now. Though I imagine S.H. Venus will probably be popping up soon. It should be awhile before we see bootlegs of the Sailor Mercury and Sailor Venus Figuarts Zero figurines. Venus hasn't even been released yet (I can't remember if Mercury has in Japan or not; if it has, it's only been very recently). :)

I know there have been a few articles by others about the S.H. Sailor Moon bootleg. You can try looking here and here for more information. I'm not sure if there are articles yet for the other S.H. Figuarts figurines, though. If there's a certain S.H. figurine that you're curious about, I can do some research and let you know my thoughts.

I'm researching the Sailor Moon Figuarts Zero figurine now, but this is what I've determined so far:
- the bootleg box lacks the "Figuarts Zero" logo (My blog has some comparison pictures, but it's still in progress.)
- the bootleg box lacks the authentic Toei sticker.
- the bootleg figurine has different colors (e.g. the reds aren't as shiny or as deep/dark as the authentic version). I'm not sure if the color difference is due to the camera/lighting or if it's an actual difference, though. That's what I was trying to figure out last week before I got side-tracked by other things.

I'll let you know if I find anything in particular about the figurine itself. In the meantime, if you're looking to buy the Sailor Moon Figuarts Zero, then definitely keep the above in mind. You should also be wary of price (like you've stated), and the seller (a lot of bootlegs come from China--I'm generally suspicious of any merchandise from sellers in China just to be safe).

The mug and rice bowl don't look legit to me (is it just me, or is "Pretty Soldier" misspelled)?

However, they do look pretty, and I know serious collectors who have similar items in their collection.

When it comes to bootlegs, I think what you want to look for are fake versions of officially released items (such as the Figurarts, the gashapons, etc) being sold as legitimate items.

I like that Saturn poster.

In my case, I've seen non-legit posters/banners that look cooler than official ones.

Some of the xxxholic banners released by GE animation look very dull, IMO. While browsing through EBay, I found banners that might not be authentic, but whose artwork featured is much more interesting and visually appealing.

I meant they aren't supposed to be sold, as stated at the bottom of them. (That doesn't mean people would comply it, of course. lol )

The item I have that is a bootleg isn't a Sailor Moon item, but an Angel Lily doll from Wedding Peach. There is a blank spot on the back of the box and in the top corner on the front, and the paint job on the doll's eyes look completely different than the original, and she is missing her Lip Liner necklace that the original one has. Also, she has a tag inside her dress that says "Mimi World" when the originals were made by Tomy. I think it's unusual that the company who made the bootlegs for these dolls had their own label. Perhaps it was a Chinese version that was legit? I know there is a Korean version of the dolls that are legit. Anyone own any of these dolls?
