For the 20th/25th Anniversary Sailor Moon is targeting a demographic of women who grew up with the series and not little kids. McDonald's Toys in Japan are currently Precure and Kamen Rider both of which are aimed towards children.
I was wondering why there hasn't been any SM collaboration with McDonald's in Japan in recent years for the franchise's anniversary, considering they have collaborated with so many other random companies to release all kinds of miscellaneous SM merchandise. But I see your point, based on the vast majority of SM merchandise that have been released in recent years, they all seem to be products that are targeted for teenagers and older people, and not little kids, except maybe for some of the gashapon toys. So it does seem like they're targeting their merchandise more towards the older demographic who have been SM fans for years.
Other anime franchises that frequently collaborate with McDonald's in Japan like Pretty Cure and Kamen Rider appeal mainly to little kids and since "Happy Meal" is for little kids, it makes sense. I guess SM is too old for little kids.
Btw should this thread be in the shopping section?
