I want Kirsten Bishop to voice Galaxia. I think it's too perfect - she voiced a femme fatale every season with the exception of SuperS (unless you count the movie where she's Badiane; personally I think she'd have been a great Nehellenia too!) and what better way to have her voice the baddest bitch of them all!

Another big name actress who is both too expensive and not an anime voice actor.

You guys who all want Hollywood names need to think smaller.

Well, we might get lucky and get an English dub similar to Disney's for Ghibli films, or even Nick's version of Winx Club! :P But yeah, it's very unrealistic to wish for celebs to do the voices.

Though Jim Cummings is a professional voice actor, and there HAVE been anime English dubs to use western animation voice actors (such as the 2003 Astro Boy). Heck, anime VAs like Steve Blum, Stephanie Sheh, Crispin Freeman, and Colleen O'Shaughnessy have been doing more and more stuff for western animation. VAs like Mona Marshall, Sherry Lynn, and Bob Bergen have also always done both.

Disney has the $$$ to make those happen. Typical anime companies like FUNimation don't, which is why they use anime voice actors instead of Hollywood actors.

And FUNimation hasthe voice talent to bring such a quality performance even without the voice cast of that show. ;)

Which seemed to be a special case, but it also used a number of anime voice actors like Wally Wingert, Jonathan Todd Ross, Lara Jill Miller, Maile Flanagan, Dave Wittenberg, etc.

Which makes them all the more qualified, and is a good thing. Only question is if FUNimation would use any of them (if FUNi got the redub license) since they're all mostly based in California, while FUNi is in Texas and has heir own selection of in-house VAs.

No because most of those guys are union VAs & Texas is a right-to-work state. Sure FUNimation have done union dubs before but it was only to get some VAs back to reprise their roles.

Sometimes a California VA will do some work for Dallas dubs, such as Stephanie Sheh and Johnny Yong Bosch. Vic Mignogna, Travis Willingham (another VA doing western animation), Laura Bailey, Kyle Hebert, and a few others also go back and fourth.

Vic, Travis, Laura, and Kyle have all worked for FUNi in the past though. I consider them in-betweeners who do work in both areas.

I know they did, but I'm just saying their move to Cali clearly hasn't affected their VO work at FUNi. :)

Actually it has because they're not used in many FUNi dubs these days unless it's for a smaller role or to reprise an older role they did previously.

NJ, I've been wondering something about this. Is there a way to tell who is and who isn't a union voice actor?

Also, I'm guessing union VAs are more expensive than non-union VAs, correct?

According to Mike McFarland, there isn't much difference in terms of pay. Texas is a right to work state, and pretty much prevents unions from having any real power, so actors in Texas (and any other RTW state) are given the same opportunities, no matter their union status. The union discourages actors from participating in non-union projects, at least under their real name. Some actors don't exactly care, but others will either not participate in non-union projects at all, or will go under an alias, such as Dameon Clarke being credited as Dartanian Nickelback for several DBZ video games and DBZ Kai. There are other reasons for using an alias (such as not wanting to be associated with something with obscene content), but this is a common reason why some VAs do it. On the contrary, some non-union VAs get work on union projects, and also have to be credited under an alias (this is more rare). Voice actors can get away with a lot of things that an on-camera actor can't.

California-based English dubs are usually divided between union and non-union.

Texas-based English dubs are ALWAYS non-union.

Canadian English dubs are almost ALWAYS union. Sailor Moon's English dub was a union production. Actually, the only Canadian English dubs that aren't union are Blue Water-produced dubs in Calgary, Alberta (IIRC).

New York English dubs are usually non-union, but there have been a few union projects recorded there over the years (such as Slayers Revolution/Evolution-R, but even that was a bicoastal dub with recordings based in California AND New York).

No Monica? And here I was under the assumption that she was popular. ^_^'

How about Hilary Haag? Maybe she could be Naru? Or dare I upgrade her to a main character?

She may be with most people but not with me. Her involvement in other redubs have not been pretty. She was AWFUL as Misa Hayase in ADV's Macross dub, went from bad to worse in FUNimation's redub of One Piece as Tashigi (especially during the Alabasta arc) & as Bulma in Dragon Ball (both Kai & the redubbed 1st movie), she's actually worse than every other woman FUNi has casted for that role over the years.

The only way i would accept her in this redub is if she voiced in a small role or as Chibiusa because as Fullmetal Alchemist-Brotherhood has shown me, she's actually tolerable when she voices a little kid since she actually did a good job in that anime where she voiced May Chang.

She's one of those Houston VAs who don't travel far from home because they have other jobs on the side and this is why she has only been in ADV & Sentai dubs so if FUNi was to get Sailor Moon then she would not be involved.

That's really too bad. She's such a good VA.

I do like Monica in crazy roles like Momoka in Sgt. Frog, and in shows like Moon Phase, and Ouran High School Host Club. I do like her Tashigi though...

As for Bulma, she does get on my nerves a LOT in that role, but I do think she's at least better than Leslie Alexander (who voiced Bulma in DB Movie 2). Tiffany Vollmer was the only other FUNi voice actor to play Bulma, and she was always pretty good, sounding appropriately unique and not TOO annoying. She also sounded very mature when Bulma got older, as shown in "The History of Trunks", and "Wrath of the Dragon.

Apparently not even to reprise other roles. When FUNi first got one of the Fullmetal Panic series, they were going to produce the English dub in-house, and mentioned that Hilary Haag would likely not reprise her role because of her other job, even though FUNimation Studios are located in Dallas, only a couple hours away from where ADV was/Seraphim Digital is. Fortunately, Shogakun wanted consistency, and tapped ADV to produce the English dub for FUNi, and Hilary was able to reprise her role.

If I had to pick one role of Monica's that I like the most, it would have to be her role as Etsumi Kido in Mirumo de Pon! Heck, the English Dub has a greatly diverse cast. And they all performed brilliantly.

You mean Kadokawa right? Second Raid was one of their US licenses.

I liked Monica Rial as Nyamo in Azumanga Daioh.

It would be nice if the Dic voices came back without sounding like wannabe "hip" girls. They fit the girls perfectly except for Minako's; her Dic VA sounded too serious and I love her Cloverway VA(who I think used to be Rei's VA). I also liked Harkua's, Michiru's, Chibiusa's and Hotaru's Cloverway VAs and would like if they could come back; but with decent voice director this time(I did not like feeling that I was watching a porno when hearing the female VAs in that dub). The only other one I want recast the is Setsuna. Both her VAs sounded way too young(and even had her use some of that stupid lingo) for someone so much older and wise.

If they can't come back, I just want to see voices that fit the characters and can actually act with a good voice director. I just really want to watch SM dubbed without cringing and having to switch to subtitles instead. I like the idea of liking both versions of a series and choosing based on a preference. For example, I like the dub and sub of Dragonball Z. If I can't find one version, I want to feel like I can watch the other with no problem even if I do prefer the one I couldn't find.

This is how I feel about it, pretty much. I loved the voice actors for DiC but wasn't a terribly huge fan of the writing (it's more cringe-worthy in retrospect but even as a kid there were some lines I definitely thought were corny), and conversely I thought the Cloverway/Optimum dub had good writing but much worse voice acting. I've learned more about how voice acting works in practice in the last few months, so I can see where a good portion of that can be blamed on bad direction rather than any fault of the actors, but I still feel like the DiC cast fit the characters better overall. (On a side note I thought DiC's version of Pluto actually did a pretty good job portraying her as an "old wise figure," for the few scenes she appeared in in R. The only problem I had was she tended to enunciate a little too carefully.)

That said, I wouldn't complain if they got someone new for Naru and Umino, or at least toned down/got rid of the one's accent and the other's squeaky voice. I feel like the southern-belle accent Osaka got in the Azumanga dub (which made me cringe all by itself but that's another rant entirely) would have fit Naru more than a Brooklyn accent.

Is it bad that I actually like Monica Rial? I loved her as Bulma and Misa Hayase as she was really able to portray them excellently to me. I would mind her voicing Ami in her young, soft voice like Hyatt from Excel Saga.

Luci Christian is another favorite of mine for sounding so sweet like Tenma Tsukamato and so deadly like Milia from Macross.

Overall, I wouldn't mind them using some of the same voice actors, but certainly not all of them.

Characters I Would Recast:

Sailor Mercury - If they could keep one, it would have to be Karen Bernstein, but she's long retired, so I'm not getting my hopes up (though she did recently mention that she hasn't totally "closed the door" on doing more voice acting in the future). Liza Balkan (as I have mentioned MANY times before and I will continue to mention more) was nothing short of a complete disaster for the character. That woman should never get behind a voice acting mike ever again if she knows what's good for her. Fortunately, that seems to be the case, as Sailor Mercury is the ONLY role attached to her name... I feel bad for Amy, but that's probably a good thing.

Sailor Pluto - Oh god. Sabrina Gredvich WARPED that character into a generic ditzy Pink Power Ranger. It was awful. I fear for her safety with her name being attached to the infamous
PLUTO DEADLY SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Susan Aceron was much better, but still no cigar.

Molly/Naru - I'm sorry, but 12-year old girls don't sound like adged, chain-smoking Harley Quinns. To be fair, it's probably the director's fault for the accent, but I still cannot imagine that woman's voice possibly working for that character even without it. You'd be surprised. Mary Long's natural voice isn't too far away from her Molly's. She's a good VA, but she was just the wrong choice.

Laurie - Oh god, do I even need to go there?

Characters whose voices I would keep:

Sailor Moon - I think all 3 of her voices could be given a second chance if given the opportunity. They all worked in different ways. They just need to stick with one voice throughout the series.

Sailor Mars - I always loved Katie Griffin's voice for Sailor Mars. I cannot imagine anyone else voicing my Red Hot Fireball. Seriously, her voice was absolute perfection (except in Movie 1, but everyone sucked in that movie, so I'll give her a break). It was sweet enough, yet could sound very bitchy and condescending if necessary. She also sounded very empowered for her battle scenes. Emile Barlow was a decent substitute, but I thought she sounded a little loud-mouthed and obnoxious for my tastes. One thing I always liked about Griffin was her soft-spoken, subtle speaking voice. Barlow just couldn't pull it off, however...

Sailor Venus - I would totally keep Emile Barlow as Venus. She sounded energetic, dramatic, and caring at the same time, while having great acting and charicterization. None of that I can say for Stephanie Morgenstern, who sounded FAR too mature for Minako.

Sailor Jupiter - Seriously, Susan Roman IS Mako!

Tuxedo Mask - Vince Corazza was really good... just don't let Toby Proctor come within 100 feet of him again.

Sailor Mini-Moon - Stephanie Beard sounded so cute as Rini/Chibi-Usa! She almost made me... like the character! Her acting needed a little polishing, but other than that, I thought she was a perfect voice for the character. Tracy Hoyt was just annoying as all hell...

Luna - The accent never bothered me. I thought it worked great for the character. It was unique. She sounded intelligent and hilarious at the same time. Her only moments of fail were her crying scenes in Movie 2, and when she transformed into a human, but a little spit and polish could fix the former, and the casting of seperate actress could fix the latter. :)

Artemis - Quite possibly the best voice in the whole English dub.

Diana - Loretta Jafelice sounded SO CUTE as the little kitty-monster! :) Naomi Emmerson... she got on my nerves from time-to-time, but she was decent enough.

I thought Sabrina Grdevich was only Pluto in R, and Susan Aceron was responsible for that Pluto Deadly Screech atrocity in S and the movies?

Sabrina was Pluto in the movies. Susan Aceron also had a bad DEADLY SCREAM, but at least it wasn't as squeaky as Sabrina's.

DiC actresses all the way (including Terri Hawkes), but Uranus & Neptune's VAs, as well as Rini's CWi VA can stay. Without them (especially Terri), the show is worthless.

The villians are okay exceptions to be recasted.
