What manga hasn't had that sometimes ?

Look at what is happening with The Promised Neverland Season 2
Faithful to what Naoko wanted back then which means use the Materials Collections and the Manga Artbook notes for the Anime as the base for anything new in the Crystal which I think what they already did in Eternal and SMC.

I suspect having the characters looking cuter, younger and less super model like back then in the manga was also Naoko’s recent vision. After all that’s the way she drew the new manga covers, and people’s tastes do change as they age.

Yes.
She wanted the Senshi+Shitenou, which she already has in PGSM, I think TOEI should have just remade Super S and Stars and do something like DBZ kai for the first three arcs in that way Naoko and TOEI would have allocated enough for the last two arcs.

Okay so here is my full review, sorry for keeping you all waiting.

The movie was overall pretty good. It starts with a digest which was the same one that was uploaded to Youtube last week. Then we go straight into the Outers at their house. The pacing was a definite improvement over the first movie, but then I think that also has to a lot to do with the fact that the first half of the Dream arc is very episodic in nature. So the second part does lend itself to the movie format a lot more. It follows the manga almost word for word.. so if you are a manga purist, rejoice! For people like me who wanted something that expanded and improved on the weaker areas of the manga it is slightly disappointing but after part 1 I fully expected a 1:1 adaptation so it is what it is at this point, really. I am not gonna spoil the whole story for those who haven’t read the manga but some of the darker scenes were slightly changed. Blood for example was kept but didn’t really look like blood, more like particle effects. Other things like melting senshi were changed to them turning to stone and crumbling, etc.

(One thing I wasn’t a huge fan of was when Haruka was referred to as Michiru’s “boyfriend”, but perhaps this goes with Naoko’s wishes of Haruka being both “male and female”, I don’t know. I would have enjoyed it more if they had just gone with girlfriend myself, though. ) I enjoyed the short interactions between them, though. Their fashion was on point! Haruka showing skin and Setsuna in that lace, yas queens!

There were parts of it that just felt that too much was going on, but I guess that’s just how the manga was, so not exactly a movie gripe.

The animation I have already gone into detail on. I know some people get really touchy about this sort of stuff but I am indeed one of those “picky fans” who aprreciates quality animation and for me it just wasn’t completely there this time around. Don’t get me wrong, nothing was UGLY and there were no scenes that really made me go “what were they thinking?!” but there were definitely parts that looked below par for a movie and worse than part 1. The hair for example, it needed more frames all around. Also I felt there were too many “still frames” (hair and fabric on still images, if that makes sense) The final 20 minutes or so were a considerable step up and featured quite a lot of pretty scenes, but I would say a lot of it wasn’t uglyness, just a lack of frames. They also needed some quality control for some of the attacks. I have an inkling that the production of the second film may have been hindered by COVID but who knows? Anyway,

Standouts for me were:

Every scene with Saturn.

Saturn’s transformation.

Pluto and Uranus’ attacks

Outer senshi speeches

Eternal Moon’s transformation and attack

Moving onto the music. It was a big improvement over the first part! There is quite a lot of variety in the tracks this time around. The biggest stand out for me was the track that was played when the Outers are introduced. It sounded slightly techno-ish and really got me pumped. There was another tracks which featured a more middle-eastern motif which also sounded really nice. They played Moon Effect as an insert song towards the end of the movie. I would have preferred Chainon personally, but it was still a nice touch.

Also, the sound effects! They definitely used A LOT of 90’s sound effects. I don’t remember them doing that many for the first part but they really went all out this time. One’s that I can recall were them using the same sfx as the 90’s for Aqua Rhapsody, and I am pretty sure they used the same sound effects as the 90’s for Usagi’s attack and the Outers transformations.

Overall it was pretty good. As an adaptation I would give it 100 percent in terms of faithfulness to the source material. Aside from some animation hiccups any issues that I really had with the movies could also be applied to the manga so I can’t really hold it against the movie. I do wish some things were expanded upon but they did their best considering the 76 minute runtime. Is perfect? No Is it gonna please everyone? No. Is it an enjoyable watch? YES. I think watching both of the movies in one sitting in the comfort on my own home will make me appreciate things a lot more, but for now I can say that both parts were pretty good, but your mileage will vary depending on how critical you are of the finer details and how much of a manga fan you are.

Yeah did you catch exactly what was said about Haruka - I heard the word marrage and such but didn't fully glark it.

Was it referred to explicitly in the manga like that or is this adlibbing ?

And yes Haruka and Setsua's clothing choices ....but apparently thats how it is in the manga so... The vision scene with Hotaru with Haruka's open shirt made me o.O

They don't need to be too faithful to the Manga but rather faithful to what NT wanted the anime to be back then since the Manga seems rushed.
How many times are you going to say that? I mean it is nice and all, just don't get your hopes too high by insisting on stuff that most likely won't happen and you will spoil your chances of like the product as is.

Agreed - in light of the circumstances Eternal is probably the best version we're ever gonna get I don't expect this to be ever remade.

Anyway! Animation,

It was a little bit of a step down from the first part. Nothing wowed me like Mercury’s awakening. Nothing was really bad but it definitely felt like I was watching Season 3 on a big screen rather than a theatrical release at points.
I said this in this forum the day the Part 2 trailer was launched... you could already see that in some scenes the animation/drawing was poor and was a downgrade from part 1. It was pretty obvious. Of course I couldnt talk about the rest of the movie cause I hadnt seen it but already in the trailer you could see some technical downgrades that I dint see in Part 1 footage. Seems that at least the final 20-30 minutes the standars go up and are pretty good so Im glad for that.

Anyway, if everything is a bit better than season 3 quality with Tadano designs which are so much better than Takahashi's... it will be ok. Tadano's designs are much beautiful to look at and that's a big improvement.

Does this scene still the same ame and if so what exactly is happening as it's hard to tell from the manga perspective?

Who's voice do we hear Nehelenia or Ziconia?

Does Mamoru still slap Rei and Mina?

This scene in the movie was actually really good. When Nehelenia is destroyed her face contorts and it looks really crazy (But in a good abstract way, not in a Mistress 9 crazy face way)

I think you’ll be OK. I feel like we almost have the same viewpoint when it comes to the art and animation. If you’re looking out for flaws (which I honestly don’t wanna do, but I can’t help it at this point lol) you’ll find quite a few but overall not bad. If you go into it knowing it’s basically a more refined season 3 with a lot nicer of an art style I don’t think you’ll be too disappointed.

I agree wholeheartedely with your view.

There are some users on this forum who at least "appear" to be expecting a Sailor Moon film with the sama level of attention to detail and quality as an Eva film or a KyoAni film like Eupho or VG.

If you watch SM Eternal with that kind of expectation you WILL be disappointed.

If you go in to watching the film with the right level of expectation you will enjoy it for what it is.

It was made by a production committe who commissioned Toei and sub contractors to make money on a set budget. There were multiple animation studios involved and it was done durin a time of pandemic.

This compares to KyoAni who don't outsource and train their own animators and put artistic quality over making money.

Bear that in mind and you'll be reasonably pleased with the result.

I'd give the films as a whole maybe a 75 - 80 out of a 100 if 100 was a 100% manga adaptation with full Naoko control and consistency done by a KyoAni level studio.

I can assure you that I will never expect TOEI to make a Sailor Moon anime with a Kyoani technical quality xD

Toei is not a top animation studio anymore when it comes to technical quality on their works. Im totally aware of that dont worry and I dont expect them to never be anymore. I just want Crystal to look ok and not having a subproduct ( only talking about technical stuff ) like the first 2 seasons were full of flaws and awful scenes to look at. From what you have said Im sure Eternal will coop my expectatives since it's looking pretty consistent with its ups and downs.

Wasn’t identifying you in particular just making general comments as some of the nitpicking over the trailers has been quite intense

Animation should be consistent and have attention to detail not saying it shouldn’t but in this day and age can’t expect this from Toei on the tight budget they had - probably little scope for redrawing frames

People who get hung up about that level of detail will be disappointed

By the way

Just imagine if SM was like this exquisite - we can but dream....
