Probably because the corrected version is more expensive or in exclusivity to some other platforms. And I personally think, they count of casual new viewers to catch up the series. So not “people” who are usual old fans of sailor moon and saw already Crystal 100 times but people who used to watch the carton as a kid. I really doubt these are the kind of people who are ready to press pause every 2 seconds and open a website to complain about a 0,5 sec. bad drawings… that’s is usually a job for a old fan of a classic stuff (sailor moon among others; but it’s happening so often Star Wars, Star Treck, Dragon Ball, St Seiya … basically in every series which is remake / remade 20 years laters…)…. I don’t think the goal is also to target anime fan but really grown up kid who watched the series as a DIC “carton” years ago. Crystal is a perfect series to binge… I wish Netflix was that popular when Crystal was “create” I guess it would have been something totally different “success speaking”.

…+ they are certainly not waiting than people buy DVD or BR after watching it on Netflix… who does that anyway anymore excepted fans like us… around me I’m the only persons still buying BR… you just have to go in Europe in stores to see how small are now the space for DVD or BR…

Anyway maybe I’m totally wrong… but it’s pretty clear for me than Netflix wants to test the market to “invest” in a last season maybe?
Casual or new fans will definitely notice the poor animation of the first two seasons though, especially without the corrections provided by the Bluray edition. You absolutely do not need to press pause to notice that the drawings are incredibly rushed and poor because of the terrible production schedule of the first two seasons.

In fact, casual fans are probably less forgiving than older fans. As much as devoted fans complain about Crysternal's animation they still watch it and drive up the series' streaming figures. Someone who is not as invested would probably just stop watching after Act 2 or 3. This is absolutely a huge mistake.

As much as I love it, I can't imagine anyone without some prior interest in sailor Moon watching either the streamed or fixed version of Crystal.
I like it, and I don't think it's total trash, but compared to almost every other anime, it is not good.
It feels like a summary of the plot and even the manga does that better.

I have watched Crystal a lot, and since I understand what I'm getting, I do enjoy it, but if I wasn't so invested in Sailor Moon, I'm sure I'd totally write it off.

I know people who watched Crystal fixed version as their first entry to the series and actually liked it and didn't like the 90s show because they have no nostalgia for it and it can be long, repetitive, silly and cheesy in a bad way if you watch it now for the first time. and is so . But there is no way a person watching the unfixed version and without prior history to the show to enjoy it. Especially episodes 2 to 4 are really hard to watch.

My best friend says he thinks Eternal is the better version and easier to watch. But he did watch it back in the Toonami days. He does prefer '90s Professor TomOH to Crystal's Tomoe, though.

90's is definitely nostalgia bait. To be fair, a lot of the older fans (at least here in my country) came to see Eternal because of the 90's memories and not Crystal. Ive seen several mention, they used to watch the show back on Toonami.

The majority of only us die-hard moonies are the ones who migrated to see Eternal from Crystal.

I put a smidge of blame on the production team. Crystal S1-2, S3, and Eternal look like they were are made from different companies at different time periods.

As some one who has seen all these versions of Sailor Moon, the 90's is the poster child of the series. Eternal imo is like a revamped version of the 90's and it looks good when it needs to. I can only imagine if they had these designs from the beginning.

Either way, each version brings something interesting.

Crystal is likely more easier for new folks who have little patience and somewhat short attention spans.

What would be interesting is to see if the 90's version got a Sailor Moon Kai treatment and got rid of most of filler. I wonder what the show would be like to watch, including SuperS and Stars?

Even I, a hard Crystal fan have to admit that the web version of Crystal is almost unwatchable. At the time, I didn't give up because I knew they would fix those errors in the BD. However, it was like I was betting on the home release.

It is especially unwatchable for new casual fans. Even we as fans barely survived desperately watching it because it is our Sailor Moon.
I think I’m totally thinking the opposite here. Moonies (or anime fan in general) are much more nitpicking (x1000) than a casual Netflix viewers… and as much I like the corrected BR version let’s not exaggerate it’s not like the difference is from 1 to 100… it’s better but is not transforming a frog into prince…

still very surprise that this ONA version is still existing Crystal was on tv in Europe and they never dare to show this version… let’s see if Crystal come also soon here…

Yeah I agree, while episodes 2-4 had lot of redraws, the number of drastically redrawn shots tend to go down after this, like twisting some eyes and mouths here and there but that didn’t change that much the whole experience. Let alone that they didn’t correct some obvious mistakes (Moon stick with Moon Princess Halation), or even created new ones (Usagi’s hair turned like Minako in a Black Moon épisode).

Fans of the franchise are more demanding when it comes to animation, they expect fluid motion as this is their favorite anime. Casual fans don't really watch much anime to begin with so they do not know what to expect when it comes to animation. But they can see all these wrong faces in static images, it is not the "ut us not fluid" complaint you can hear from a fan, it is "drawn with my left foot". The animation has never been improved, but the drawings have been and most casual people look at drawings, they don't inspect the animation and the frame rate. While not perfect, the blu ray version is way way more acceptable than these. Nobody says it is perfect, it is watchable.

I'm going put a limb out here. That new fans are not going care so much. They would notice, but they will probably shrugged it off.Another component is they have the series complete. There not waiting two-three weeks an episode. There going to be binging it and going to the next episode. They will be less likely to point out , complain , and harper on it for weeks.

Disagree. I became a fan thanks to the 90's. If I had stayed only with the manga reading experience I wouldn't be here. Manga/Crystal is for fans and those that want to know the content of the story.
Crystal is an anime aberration compared to other excellent anime out there who its viewers a veeeeeery exigent.

Well I think if you omitted the filler of the first season to make a 'Kai' version the episodes 45 and 46 wouldn't work. One of the things that makes the 90's so charming is that you invest all of your time in knowing the girls by making an emotional connection and when they die or something serious happens at the end of any season you as a spectator feel loss, desperation, happiness, etc.

Maybe SuperS is the only one that can benefit from a 'kai' version, but there are episodes I love, for instance episode 138. Why? Because my boyfriend died and left in this world a few dreams to fulfill. I felt related to the victim of that episode and I didn't need the hideous Golden Crystal plot.

Interesting to know that in Japan, judging by Yahoo Japan views, a lot of japanese fans remember fondly filler episodes whereas in the West almost everyone demonise it.

As for Crystal on Netflix, they should replace the streaming version for the fixed one but to be honest the non-anime audience won't watch it. Those who want to know the franchise through Crystal thanks to its binge-factor deserve to watch the polished one at least before diving into other incarnations of the story.

I think age has something to do with that. Sailor Moon was targeting little girls as its audience in Japan in the 90s. Kids seeing those episodes probably enjoyed them more because of the goofy antics, and have nostalgia for them as a result, whether or not they would still think fhey hold up on rewatch.

While many western Moonies grew up with it, plenty others didn't and only met it as teens or older. So different demograhic may have had a different initial opinion on it.

I'm in the middle, personally. The episodes that actually developed the personalities of the girls, for example, are great. But the ones mostly focused on one-off characters we never saw again were usually a waste. That plus the animation tended to look much better on actual plot episodes, so that hurts it too IMO.

To be fair, they kinda are. At least between S1-S2 and Eternal, there's a 7 year gap and not only entirely different staff but another production company involved (Studio Deen).

True. Kids tend to accept (and enjoy) filler a lot better than teenagers or adults.

That's why anime directed to kids could have seasons of 50 episodes.

Hence Crystal & Eternal can be regarded as two different (albeit related) projects of the franchise. :)

Their decision making is so baffling. Who do they think would still buy Crystal on DVD or Blu-Ray in 2021 and why would they think these people who haven’t seen Crystal would actually go and shell out money after seeing some incredibly bad off model animation?

Surely they know that the ONA’s original animation is essentially infamous at this point and that still allowing people to see it is worsening the brand?
I agree with all of this- I watched Crystal and Eternal once on Hulu / Netflix and my god that was enough. I wouldn’t even buy the dvd / blue rays if they were half off.

Currently re-watching Crystal since Netflix uploaded it. I mainly have it on in the background to give the show some streams.

The first two episodes are really fantastic and I remember had me excited for the rest of the season when it first aired. Things sort of fall off the rails as the arc closes out but the first episode was exactly what it needed to be for me. The sirens from her buns are the perfect first attack for Usagi to employ. And I just don't think you can go wrong with set up for Ami's intro. It's creepy enough.

It wouldn’t work. For one Dragon Ball Z already closely followed the manga just with filler and padding out the ass to keep the manga ahead. So removing the filler (well most of it) allowed it to claim to be “The Akira Toriyama Cut”

The 90s Sailor Moon anime takes some cues from the manga but it pretty much does it’s own thing especially after the Masquerade episode.
Another thing is so much of the “filler” in Sailor Moon is tied to the main story (as opposed to Dragon Ball Z where most of the filler is extraneous and expendable)The Tuxedo Mask love letter episode is technically filler but it’s important for establishing Naru’s crush on Nephrite and him preying on her. The Ail/En arc would be entirely filler but it establishes how the girls and Mamoru got their memories back and how Usagi got her Crystal power transformation and Cutie Moon Rod.

And then S-Sailor Stars are so tied to their victim of the day formula skipping “the filler” would absolutely destroy any sense of pacing. For example you need all the filler in S to allow for build up to “Who has the talisman sealed away in their heart crystals!”

Otherwise it just goes Rei, Usagi, drummer girl where Chibi Usa shows up, Minako (where the Guardian Senshi and Outers learn each others mutual identities) and Neptune snd Uranus.
