Are there any particular shots anyone wants to share? Considering the warnings, I got and Clow mentioning y'all had to wait 2-3 weeks for each episode. Also does anyone else have any stories about when they first watched Crystal.
I remember me waiting for each episode to drop .I download the episodes and show them to my friend.

ACT 11
  • Aw Usagi cuddling Luna. :usagi::luna:::love::
  • Endo?
  • I like the comedic reactions. I think that's what I needed. :-P
  • Evil Mamo: Will you show me how you play:quagmire::mischief:
  • He's watching Usagi play so closely :grey:
  • This Luna seems quite nicer than 90s Luna [for what I remember] I feel like 90s Luna would've been all like
  • Darn he got Mako with the mind control. Wanted to see If she could sock him in the face like PGSM [I swear I don't hate Mamoru, that part just caught me off guard in the best way possible]
  • They got away with the Crystal meth.
  • [oh, they're still there in the next episode]
  • Favorite episode so far!

I believe 90's Luna was aggressive as hell...I think she held Usagi at "claw-point" in one episode...
True. But then, Usagi was a much bigger idiot in the original anime than the manga, so Luna had her paws full.

I remember watching the streaming versions, too. Always saw them as they aired, mashing refresh before the ENG page would list the streaming episode, wading through longer and longer ad breaks... It's one of those experiences that you can only get when the series is new, and it was fun, but watching episode after episode of poor animation (or total lack thereof) was so disappointing. I just about fell out of my chair when S3 started because there was SO. MUCH. MOTION. in comparison to S1-2.

ACT 12 [I'll squeeze a third in today]
  • So, Kaolinite was using Queen Beryl's hair attack this whole time. I wanna see a court case about that. :P
  • I hear Venus kills QB in the manga. Is that true, did they change that? :minako:
  • Aw crap Tux got the sword!
  • QB dies from SM. [no comment just thought I should mention]
  • Matallia killed the generals... I'm sorry but I didn't care about any of them in this version... at all. Did Venus have a special relationship with Kunzite?
  • SAILOR MOON SLICED TUX'S CHEST [then they got all kissy :creeper:] THEN SHE STABBED HERSELF!!!

Yes, Venus killed QB in the manga, and it wasn't some goofy necklace-breaking, it was a full-on Venus-be-pissed-stabbing.

From what I've seen, nobody liked the handling of the generals and the so-called relationship they built into this version. The 'relationship' was based wholly off of one piece of art Naoko made back in the day. There was some implied flirting/romantical feelings in a single interaction between Venus and Kunzite in the past, but that's it. The flashback in the prior episode (I don't recall which, it's the one where Venus randomly runs up the side of a building only to stop the fight for a freaking conversation) was totally fabricated for Crystal, as well.

I politely disagree. I don’t believe it was fabricated.

:kero:

I believe that if Naoko had had more time while writing the manga she would have paired the senshi with the shitennou.

The final chapter of the Sailor V manga implies that Venus was infatuated with Kunzite.

Ehhhh

:luna:

I suppose we'll never know without asking her (and she doesn't even remember some of the things she penned, so she may not know anymore). But there's nothing beyond the image that indicates that there was any direct connection between the senshi and shittenou (aside from Venus/Kunz). I suppose the interaction between Jadeite and Rei might be considered, but he seems attracted to a semblance of a memory, not necessarily a romantic affiliation.

In any case, it's just an indication as to how rushed everything was. Rei later claims that she did and will continue to live a romanceless life to serve Serenity, which contradicts the interaction with Jadeite. But then, there are tons of plot holes in Sailor Moon that were opened up as the series went on. We'll probably never know for sure.

Still, having Venus go from battle mode to preaching about how the girls need to remember these guys was awkward, to say the least.

When Crystal first aired act 12 I was horrified and dropped it for a full year. It was one of the worst episodes I have ever seen. The way they killed Beryl, the shittenou handling was awful, it felt like a terrible fanfic. After that I ended up liking the rest of Crystal, though season III designs were one of the ugliest I survived, but it was balanced with better direction.

I think they had to alter Beryl‘s death because Act 12 (manga) is very graphic: we have (1) Venus stabbing Beryl … and (2) Usagi stabbing Mamoru… and then (3) herself. ::eeklez:

Crystal and Eternal have been causing disagreements since day 1:

I really disliked season 3’s character designs when I first saw thembut I watched season 3 and loved it and assumed that everybody else had loved it, too, because the animation was better—people had been complaining about the animation since day 1—and the story was amazing (personal opinion, of course).

Anyhow, I accessed the forum to read what everyone thought and I remember people saying they preferred the character designs of s1 & s2 and absolutely hated season 3’s character designs. :purpleghost:

And then there was “Eternal…”

And, apparently, the problem with “Eternal” was the story. But I don’t understand how the story can be a problem if we all knew beforehand that the film would be a strict 1:1 adaptation of the manga. :purpleghost:

Anyhow, I have fond memories of 2014, staying awake until midnight to catch the episodes and binge-watching all the episodes in 2020.

:kero:

This experience has been a nice journey. Even with TOEI making so many changes, I enjoyed the journey and discovered that I actually prefer the manga over the 90’s anime.

Bring “Cosmos,“ I say.

When episode 1 was released (5 PM in my country), my friends and I spent the whole night talking about it, taking screenshots... The next day, I was so happy that I had to wake up at 4 AM to watch it again. :)

Well, disliking season III style doesn't mean you automatically liked S1-2 style, just some takes on it, like the Moon Pride video and cover as well as key visuals before the show started as well as some individual scenes here and there. Overall though none of Crystal styles, Eternal included, quite captured the beauty of neither the manga nor the 90s show. That aside, Eternal is still probably the most balanced one.

Honestly rewatching episode 12.I know they were trying to do.Still killing them off that way was really bad idea.Thry really should have an extra episode to write something more balance.

Although it’s undeniable that TOEI could have done a better job with the animation, I thought that many scenes of s1-s2 captured the beauty and essence of the manga (personal opinion, of course):

The character designs of s1 and s2 masterfuly capture Naoko’s style. It’s a shame that production was so rushed.

I like all seasons & the films. TOEI delivered an inconsistent product with different character designs, but oh well. I am enjoying the journey.

I enjoy the journey too, i guess, because it’s such a rollercoaster ride. They treat Sailor Moon / us good and bad, pamper us and disappoint us. Toei makes sure to keep us emotionally involved. Even if we think we don’t care (anymore) we still care.

Crystal Comparisons | The Sailor Moon Crystal comparison site!
There is this site which compares original ONA release / BRD corrections, that will help you understand our level of angst when it was aired ^^
The first page is S3 episodes but it has all other episodes if you search earlier pages.

I disagree.

First, I said it once, Crystal is not faithful to the manga. Not only because of the small changes made in the story, actually that's not the main issue, but because Crystermos hasn't got the intimate connection that exists between the atmosphere of the manga and Takeuchi's inner world. It's just a hollow reinterpretation. Crystermos would have been faithful even with changes in the story if Takeuchi's worldview had been respected.

Second, Crystal never managed to capture Takeuchi's fairy-like stroke. Only Ikuko Itoh achieved it in those flashbacks in episodes 18 or 68, or Kazuko Tadano in episode 28 (illustrations of Yumemi), and it was noticeable it was intentional, since it's a style impossible to animate.
