I've seen cats who actively ask humans for petting, say, raising a forefoot to tap gently on a human's forearm to ask the human to pet them. I had a tortoise who could recognize the sound of the metal dish hitting the floor & came out from its hiding place for the food whenever it heard that sound.

To me, both the Moon cats & ordinary cats are sentient beings. :)
