So I was watching the Sailor Moon Stars upload by Toei on YouTube (the one where Luna is ‘taken in’ by Yaten.) and when he takes Luna in for a spa treatment there’s an ‘Okama’ that does Luna’s wash and clothing. Then, the actress that he rejected earlier in the episode says, ‘ヤテンくんホモなんでしょ?!」“You’re gay, aren’t you, Yaten?!’

To me it’s strange that this is the first time (and last) they referred sexuality in explicit terms after Zoicite, Fisheye, Fiore and all the shoujo-ai elements they jam packed in the franchise using ‘hushed’ terms up to this point.

For what it's worth Zoisite is explicitly referred to as a homosexual in the 1993 Majokko Daizenshuu, a guidebook covering all of Toei's magical girl series up until Sailor Moon R. Minako also refers to Artemis as an "okama" in an early Sailor V chapter.

Thanks for the intro, interesting!

To be honest, while all of Sailor Moon is pretty queer, Stars is way more queer than I ever remembered. Heck, that’s not to mention Usagi receiving what she thought was a love letter from a girl in her class in the same episode, to the overt HaruMichi comments to the super bara Sailor Guts a few episodes previous!

It’s sort of fascinating to me to go through all the magical girl anime of each decade and how it’s informed by the social norms of the time. Which is why it’s sort of funny how 30 years on Precure is only just getting around to being somewhat inclusive again. Wonder what took them so long.

Apparently, Kunzite isn't a homosexual because he is the masculine one in the relationship
Spoiler: show
and therefore the top.

As does Luna. I own the Stars boxset.
Luna says it too?

Luna likes to act like butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth but she’s actually one of the rudest and savage characters on the show :P

Also the fact that she goes HAM on Aretemis for supposedly cheating on her with a Nun when she literally had a whole movie about her infidelity one season prior P-:

Sorry, went off on a tangent

Someone made the hypothesis that magical girl shows have an inherent bias towards homosexuality. You have the protagonist and they do often get a boyfriend or husband, and you have a bunch of other females who are alongside the protagonist as the heroes. You don't usually want to add a bunch of other boys for them who get a bunch of focus as that isn't magical girl, but adding them at all doesn't make the relationship seem interesting. But most people want to pair up most of the characters with someone if they are not said to be asexual. Ergo, the other girls get another girl in most cases to be expressly or subtlety paired with, and who can resist a couple of cute and/or sexy girls being completely into each other anyway? They often get to be young or first loves, often both, which is especially romanticized in our culture, and most people remember having attempted romance and some success with it at that age.

Haruka and Michiru both have a few curveballs like already moving in together, doing public displays of affection, being old enough that people are also fairly likely to add sexy to the list where you would not for the Puella Madoka one, notable given that lesbians are usually a cute thing in Japanese legend as something girls can do like any crush but getting as physical as men and women can is less endorsed, and Haruka and Michiru also have a family with Hotaru when they look to be around 17-18, which would not make much sense if the magical girl was something like 11, who would still be pretty dependent on their parents or some people to raise them.

I like Michiru and Haruka because of the more mature dynamic they have. I think the shoujo-ai of Madoka is fine, but the staff, like in many anime are too scared to outright explicitly state the nature of their relationship and instead choose to queer-bait. And honestly there’s no male romance in the show, all the fans are already in on it and wouldn’t be against it.. but for whatever reason admitting the fact would be ‘sullying’ the ‘virginal maiden’ angle? It would be so refreshing to have a fresh, modern take on the trope. I feel like most anime either plays up the LGBTQ as ‘taboo’ or as sexual sadism. Which I mean, happened in the West until a couple of decades ago, too. Where is our happy medium?

Haruka and Michiru´s gay agenda:

6:30 Wake up to see the other next to you.

6:31 Kiss her.

6:32 Get out of bed and put on new clothes.

6:34 Put coffee machine on

6:35 Put bread slice in the toaster.

6:40 Eat breakfast.

6:55 Wake up Hotaru and get her to get dressed for school.

7:00 Make Hotaru eggs and French toast

7:30 Leave for classes at university on your tandem bike with Michiru

7:45 Lock bicycle at university

8:00 Take classes 101

12:00 Find Michiru at lunchtime

12:45 Go to University Library to go file joint tax paperwork with Michiru before the bureaucracy's deadline

15:00 Find Michiru at the end of classes to go home.

16:00 Find Hotaru at home, ask her what she did that day with Chibiusa and other friends.

17:00 Kill some extra terrestrial monster with Earth Shaking. Pat Hotaru´s head for doing such a good job at helping.

18:00 Make Hotaru and Michiru dinner.

19:00 Watch a favourite movie with them.

20:00 Put Hotaru to bed.

21:00 If it´s Friday, get steamy with Michiru.

22:00 Go to sleep next to Michiru.

Sounds pretty good for them I think.

Valid!

I don't recall this Yaten line in the versions I've seen...was it subsequently changed?

Also, that actress from the episode is the worst civilian we've seen...constantly abusing and discarding her pets. She didn't need a refresh or restore...the monster was her true form.
