People need to understand each other first............
My thoughts exactly.
Certainly, Fumina was not the end all or be all of Sailor Moons - nor was ANZA, or Miyuki, and neither will Marina be. They all have something different going for them. Miyuki and Marina are not as vocally strong as ANZA or Fumina, but that doesn't mean that Miyuki and Marina are annoying, or that they're any less qualified to play the part.
While it is important to keep an actress' vocal strength in mind, that's not soley how they should be judged. It's a musical, yes, but they've also got to be able to dance and act. If they sing like an angel, but they dance like me - trust me, it's not pretty - I'm less likely to enjoy their performance than, say, someone who's equally good at all things, but doesn't necessarily excel in any. (Besides, both musical talent and good looks tend to be subjective; we're never going to have perfect harmony in this debate.)
Personally, I love all of them, and for different reasons. ANZA has what I've come to call the Ballistic Usagi quality about her. Smart about-face from cheerful schoolgirl to a soldier who's all about business. Her scream at the end of Sorezore no Elegy was absolutely devastating. In the end, I suppose it was her range of emotions that impressed me most.
Fumina didn't have the emotional range ANZA did, but her voice was incredibly high qualit, and she definitely wasn't all that bad in the cheerful!Usagi department. In all honesty, she made a much better Neo Queen Serenity than she did Usagi. (She was a great straightwoman to apron-wearing Endymion in Kaguya K. ...Also, is it just me or is there something intrinsically wrong with Endymion wearing a frilly pink apron?)
Miyuki had her moments of angst (LDJ especially, after what happens to Mamoru), but she was much better suited to a cheerful Usagi. The Dracul arc was a mess, much as I love it, and I honestly spent more time watching Yuuta and Ono-sama than I did Miyuki. That being said, I certainly didn't feel the need to fast forward through any of her songs, and I still love both the original and remixed The Last Change.
Marina has really, really come into her own since Black Lady. There were some stellar vocal moments in Ryuusei; Moon Memories comes to my mind. She's gotten more comfortable in her voice, in her acting. I didn't think she was suited for a Stars Usagi at first, but she played it nicely, and it's suiting that her maturity appears in a show that needed it more than Black Lady or even Mugen.
So maybe Fumina was the "worst" Usagi. But I would definitely not go so far as to say any of them were bad. All of them were great vocalists and dancers, and far above average actresses. There have been actresses who are far less skilled in various Senshi parts, whom I've felt the need to fast forward through when they sing or have a long speaking part, but I've never felt the need to do so with any of the four Usagis.
P.S. Anza looks like a caveman
Yes, I'm sure cavemen were wearing short, sparkly skirts back in their day. And I never once saw her drag her knuckles on the ground, although I have yet to see the glory that is Gaiden. Maybe I just missed it?
