Did ppl get wrong with Beryl's character?

Many ppl say Beryl was a very sympathetic woman whose love was used by evil.

But even in the manga, she was a very ambitious woman, she actually waited for Metallia's power to come in her flashback and intended to rule the world by her own. Also she treats Mamoru as a trophy, even brainwash him as a tool.

I'm not saying she's 100% dark, but she is no way close to some poor victim.

The Moon Kingdom didn't rule the Earth directly, but did so thru their puppets on it (you may still understand that as kinda "allies," but it was on an unequal footing, like master & slave). Those puppets got various personal benefits by playing such role, while the MK benefited by exploiting the Earth economically, & this relationship had been lasting for many generations.

Lol! Well, Beryl did have a huge problem with Earth being invaded by love-struck teenagers.

I disagree. In my opinion, if she were to be wise and respected, it would be all the more fulfilling of a story for her to fall from grace and would make her a more compelling character. As long as it isn't a simple brainwashing and we see her succumb to her flaws, it is more humanizing to see people lose.

Personally, I prefer it when someone who is genuinely competent and moral is corrupted instead of someone secretly being a bad apple all along and is rewarded for it. To me, the former shows the skill of the evil force doing the manipulating.

If Beryl was always evil but just lacking in power, and a villainous benefactor turns her into an evil overlord, that's a boring villain in my eyes. I prefer to see characters either pure evil obstacles or as people who under other circumstances would be heroes but fell into the wrong sway. That's just the way I feel, though.

If we talk about story quality, I think it should go middle ground, the character needs to be wise and respected, but at the same time also showed some dark side that caused the downfall instead of a sudden turn. Also she only wanted Mamoru as a trophy, so I don't think love is a good reason for her to go evil.

From what we saw from the manga, she indeed was bad apple before. Anime only briefly said it, from Another Story we saw her as a wise sage fighting against evil influence before her corruption.

Also in the manga, she didn't become the demon queen like appearance and power before she revived Metalia in present life. She was in her ordinary form when attacking the Moon Kingdom and got killed by Venus' sword.

But whatever it is, I think too little was shown before her change. Another Story was a good attempt.

The main issue I have with Beryl's "love caused her to go evil" was that she never truly showed love towards Mamoru. All she did was to brainwash him and force him to do things he didn't like. In the anime she even said "I will kill you, too" when he refused to marry her last life. If her love was really that strong, then she should have shown it.

So it's never really convincing to me.

It's officially the latter, but she still seems to act fairly independently in the show, except a scene in which she moves her hand toward Mamoru while Beryl does the same gesture toward nobody at the same moment. And they could also appear in the same place, when they both were in the Dark Kingdom.

She is your typical villain and is mean just for the sake of being mean. No redeeming qualities.

To be fair, I don't think most of the ppl could simply wish their love to be happy with another without bittering. I cannot do it.

But at least they should treat their loved one well. Beryl never ever showed that. She never felt remorse for killing him in the past, and all she tried was brainwash Mamoru into her pawn. I don't think it's what you do for someone you love, at least she should try to protect him and treat him well to win his heart.

Just like did Demande love Usagi/Sailor Moon in the beginning? No he just wanted her as a trophy, but when he sacrificed himself to protect her, that is love. Beryl never did anything like that.

As a beryl fan i don't think she is pure and i can Never imagine her being innocent. But i love her that way.

Her love for endymion is because of her ambition. She just craves him. Maybe she is also jealous that endymion didn't chose her.

Beryl was extremely one-dimensional in the 90's anime and is one of the few villains it failed in it's portrayal but she has hidden depths in all the other versions and is actually one of the better villains of the manga.
