They were good in Classic, but after that obviously the writers ran out of ideas, other than R movie, Mamoru seems to be in a very awkward position.

I think that's why Stars gave us Seiya, and S teases on Haruka/Usagi.

I'm in the minority, but I wouldn't mind seeing the two of them broken up. Of course, we know it won't happen because of that pink bunny in the corner and because "Miracle Romance" is baked into this franchise, but I can't stand the main couple together.

Yes. It's one thing to be "endgame" and then there's another to be together while it doesnt make sense.

They easily could've stayed broken up during S2-4 or 3-4 and get back together at the end of the series after they've both grown more.

Having to face the fact that:
A. they were together in a past life and trying to see if those emotions carry over to who they are now
and then
B. Finding out they have a future daughter together....

Can be stressful. The universe is kind of trying to tell them that they NEED to be together but is it something that they are even ready for? Can they experience life and see if they make it back to each other in the end?

Honestly anime staff, just really did not want to make a romance. It seems like the anime wanted to focos more on friendship and adventures of a group of girls.Than more fovos plot and story.

I feel Mamorou got the short end of the stick. He not a sailor gaurdian and reduce to just throw roses.Anime feet more like if it was not for their past selves they would not be together.

The biggest problem is I never bought them as a couple in the 90s anime. The worst part is twice the anime brings up the suggestion that Usagi and Mamoru really aren't meant for each other even if their past lives were in love. It's a valid point and it gets forgotten both times. If the pink spore never existed and the "We're the future King and Queen of the earth" wasn't an actual plot point, I would have completely head canoned that Usagi and Mamoru had broken up sometime after Stars

Maybe they broke up but still had a child later?

Something I wish the anime had done was use Mamoru more as part of the main group of friends. Show him having more interactions as a companion to not just Usagi, but also Ami, Rei, Makoto, and Minako. Show him casually hanging out with or running into any of them besides Usagi and engaging in actual invested conversation with them, and make all that seem like a normal thing that happens in their everyday lives. Basically, make Mamoru more than just "Usagi's love interest", show that he's also an active member of the main circle of friends. There were rare occasions in the anime where it actually did do this, but they were scarce and really not done often enough.

I think that would help his character in 90s significantly.

But instead, it felt like the anime was of the mindset of "Sorry! This is a girls show, so we only focus on the girl heroes! All boy heroes are secondary, so nyeh!" :p

(1) It isn’t entirely true that Mamoru lacks strength and personality.

(2) The fans who have read the manga know that the Dream arc is Mamoru’s story.

(3) The Dream arc reveals what SuperS concealed: Mamoru intimately complements Usagi in strength and power. He holds the Golden Crystal.

(4) SuperS is a terrible, terrible season because it focuses solely on Chibiusa and completely dismisses Mamoru’s richly deserved development as a character.

(5) The Dream arc is the best arc of the manga.

This is not mean being sexist.I feel like since the staff of anime was male. They were more interested in the girls.

We are mostly referring to the 90s anime.Which did gave Mamorou the short end of the stick.

Obviously not they very much love and are devoted to one another. Doing so would ruin the series.

Also I don't think that Mamoru is in a "awkward position" post R he was a good character who had many good plot points.

Also for Haruka in S she flirted with all the girls and Seiya was just a poor man's replacement for Mamoru while he was dead due to Galaxia.

Though I will say this if Sailor Moon was made in the West I bet Mamoru would be character assassinated and they would break up for good because they would want Sailor Moon to be a "Strong Independent Woman who don't need a man."
