About Mercury: I hate watching Usagi acting that way. But at the same time I pity her. So much is happening and she has no time to process it. I hate Ami for slapping her but I understand the meaning for it. It’s a very intense scene. Sailor Jupiter sacrificed herself and Sailor Moon was willing to give up the Legendary Silver Crystal, then she starts acting hysterical until Sailor Mercury slaps her to calm down Sailor Moon. Mercury did apologies however.

It is fiction, so obviously I do not have a problem.

Usagi was not equipped to be in a combat, she wanted to surrender herself to the enemy and the inners had to do what they believed was right.

Similarly, in the manga, when Haruka slaps Minako, it’s the same thing: she needs to remind Venus of the imminent threat that Galaxia presents. Plus, Minako is supposed to be the leader of the inner senshi.

I love cheap drama. I wish it happened more, tbh - just imagine Mamoru and Demand fighting for Serenity, punching each other. More telenovela moments never hurt :D

Mamoru has a a lot of competition, due to Demande, Seiya, and potentially Galaxia but I don't discount the Cauldron Guardian deciding to take away Usagi completely to the Cauldron due to her duties there.

The three listed weren't "necessary", but they were good for the story. Mars is the only one I might waiver on as she was rather abusive towards Usagi in the first season, so it didn't add anything new. Mercury of all people slapping her, however, showcased the gravity of the situation they were in. Uranus slapping her after being so protective over her in Stars also really sold the "evil" bit.

The only one I really remember well is Mars slapping Usagi. It stuck out in my mind since the moment made me a little mad and it fuels my dislike of season 1 Sailor Mars. Maybe in the moment we needed a hard and pragmatic "snap out of it" but it's just built up on top of moments I found Rei to generally not be a good friend. Their dynamic would take a turn for, well being the same thing but this time it's actually cute later on so I'm not sure to what extent I forgive this mild violence

Nowadays slapping is invariably seen as violence/abuse, but back then it could be seen as outta love - similarly, corporal punishment on children was commonplace & even seen as necessary in the past, but nowadays it's outlawed & parents/teachers doing that can be prosecuted.

When it comes to old anime I never question the mom spanking her kid cuz this IS stuff we all know to be fair, no real shock value there. But where it shows my age is I'd never figure it bleeds into these other relationships. Hitting your friend seems weird to me and I'd expect it to just turn into a fist fight or something at that point.

But now that you mention it being done out of love that's probably why I completely forgot Mercury ever slaps Moon. She seems like a loving friend from the start so she had the slapping license. I can give her a back in the day pass

Perhaps it's also got something to do w/ the cultural differences on what behaviors are acceptable/unacceptable. :)

Not an Usagi slap but I hated how Usagi slapped Mamoru for forgetting her birthday even though she never told him her birthday.:O
Honestly, after that whole breakup arc and Mamo being unsympathetic, I think like a few others who probably dislike the R characterization that happened to Mamoru, I felt that this was partially cathartic karma as well (despite that arc taking place the previous season).

She was frustrated that Mamoru gave his life for Usagi and she outright said this.
I don’t blame Rei for feeling that tho. Mamoru was her boyfriend at the time and had to see him risk his life plus him making I will always protect you declarations to Usagi. She had to watch Usagi cry all over him. Rei felt betrayed with Usagi and Mamoru not being honest with her. Rei was suffering through this situation too but no one aside from Makoto gave her some comfort.

Agreed here. Usagi should have communicated that to Mamoru. Same energy should be kept here with Usagi as people who like to always get on Mamoru for not communicating in the R breakup season. Least you could see that Mamoru didn’t tell Usagi since she pretty much told him she didn’t give a darn about her life plus didn’t take the warning seriously cause all she cared about was being with him. Usagi needs to have some self-care there.

People always be happy hyped up when Usagi does something bad to Mamoru in the relationship because they thought it was “deserved” for something unrelated to the situation plus their dislike of him, but as soon as Mamoru does something wrong folks be hanging onto it so they could forever keep hating.

90s anime: downplays "miracle romance" and mamoru's character due in part to director's weird preferences

also 90s anime: creates anime-only episode with mamoru's anime-only aloofness getting him in trouble with usagi

Can’t really say Mamoru was being aloof in that situation. Usagi was the one who didn’t ever communicate to him that it was her birthday and expected him to sense it. No one should be thought to be aloof for not sensing something that was never told. By that logic, Usagi should’ve sensed why Mamoru broke up with her or she’s aloof for not getting it.
