FTL Travel/Teleportation

Canon (What Happened)

Teleportation is the main faster than light (FTL) travel method in the series. The Sailor Scouts can use Sailor Teleport, and the Black Moon Clan uses parts of the Malefic Black Crystal to teleport for instance. The Malefic Black Crystal can also transport the user through time as well as space, making it special. Other organizations like the Dead Moon Circus and Shadow Galactica can also use teleportation, and the Death Busters are attempting to bring Pharaoh 90 into the Solar System. Sailor Scouts can also fly through space if needed, but this takes far longer. Some teleportation methods are more efficient than others.

Curiously, there are no large spaceships in the series. The main spaceship of the R season is Rubeus’s UFO which is not that large. The spaceships seen in Super S are also not particularly large either. Shadow Galactica, most strangely, seems to have no large spaceships (at least in the anime) despite being a galactic empire. Why is this so?

Theory

The teleportation methods used in Sailor Moon for faster than light travel can only teleport a certain mass or volume. This means that most inter-system spaceships will be below a certain maximum size for the faster-than-light travel or teleportation needed to move them. This prevents teleportation or faster than light for capital ships, and this explains why there are no capital ships in Sailor Moon. Since capital ships would take too long to move to other solar systems, they would be too impractical, or would only be used in a single system.

The “Old West” of Galactic Settling

There is a “land rush” in space which constitutes claiming as many planets as you can govern if there is enough unclaimed territory. Crystal Tokyo used nanomachine replication technologies to make colony ships faster, which could develop into bases on other planets. With the improvements on FTL teleportation technology made in the 2090s in terms of greater “jump drive distance”, it was therefore quite easy for Crystal Tokyo to settle nearby star systems outside the Solar Systems with bases. A greater “jump drive” distance means faster and easier settling. There was quite a bit of expansion room before running into other polities, which were respected. In about 40 years or so, over 100 planets had been surveyed and bases built using replication technology. The planets that were habitable were considered for settlement once there was enough interest to settle them.

Other polities also had their own land rushes where there was available room for settling. The combination of more room, credibility from Sailor Moon/Neo-Queen Serenity saving the galaxy in the Shadow Galactica War, and superb governance meant that Crystal Tokyo became a de facto galaxy leader by 2100.

I think the galaxy will have some Old West equivalents or archetypes to it. Settling outside your solar system is difficult because of how FTL travel might work. There are many planets that are inhabitable, but many polities never had the resources or political will to settle them. Most galactic governments will likely consist of one or a few neighboring systems (except for the Watchers of the Deep Core or other civilization in the galactic core where the star systems are less spread out.). The galactic frontier settling, however, is more likely to be settled in a more organized way than the historical settling of the American West. (Do note that popular perceptions of the Old West often exaggerate the level of violence.)

So how does the reborn Senshi work? Yes, Sailor Zacharia has an eagle companion. She is also part of a Sailor Guardian team of nearby systems. Yes, she will one day meet Neo-Queen Serenity. Let's hope this isn't awkward.

^ A simpler explanation for the lack of spaceships in the Sailor Moon universe is that they're unnecessary in the 1st place because technology has already allow teleportation of personnels to anywhere at any distance in the universe in no time, hence no (clumsy) transportation hardware, whether it's a bicycle or a massive surface landing ship, is needed at all.

Neo-Queen Serenity: Power Analysis

Finally something that's actually about Sailor Moon herself. Yes, she is even stronger now. Analysis of the Silver and Golden Crystals have led to Neo-Queen Serenity and King Endymion getting more abilities beyond what they already have:

Increased power of all Sailor Guardian abilities without transforming.

Post-Stars, Neo-Queen Serenity has all the Sailor Guardian powers she had as Sailor Moon, but even more so, and this is also combined with the Lambda Power. This is extremely formidable for obvious reasons. With the Lambda Power, she was capable of reviving all the planets and people who died in the Shadow Galactica War. In the Crystal Tokyo era, Sailor Moon/Neo-Queen Serenity no longer needs to transform to use her amazing suite of powers. She bestowed the transformation ability to her daughter Chibiusa, and is scarcely weaker for it.

In short, Sailor Moon now, as Neo-Queen Serenity, is considerably stronger than she was in the Stars arc–which brings some perspective to mind.

Increased Intelligence

Yes, I have a hypothesis that the Silver Crystal unlocked not just the physical but intellectual potential of the Sailor Guardians and King Endymion. There is a theory that the competence difference between untransformed Usagi Tsukino and Sailor Moon is partially because the Sailor Guardian Transformation also boosted her intelligence as well as her physical characteristics.

Mastery of the Silver Crystal further increases not just her physical stats but her intellectual ones. Cosmic awareness is a benefit, but there is also a superhuman level of intelligence gained. That explains going from “academically challenged” to “the greatest sovereign ever–smarter than every US politician combined easily.”

Mastery of Sailor Crystals also applies to all other Sailor Guardians, and it also greatly increased their intelligence. It took the already extremely intelligent Ami Mizuno to someone clearly beyond (baseline) humanity in terms of intelligence. She has mastered almost every scientific discipline.

Aura of awe.

“His aura was affecting the entire process, seemingly increasing the efficiency of the Crystal Tokyo diplomats simply by being there.”
-Quote on King Endymion (in-universe)

This is based off Tuxedo Mask's/King Endymion's ability to seemingly increase the coordination of the Sailor Guardians when he shows up.

Incidentally, Neo-Queen Serenity has an even stronger version of it, as if she isn't powerful enough already. Besides a general “boost everyone’s efficiency on my team”, she could focus her influence on a single target. The Sentinel could feel the power of her Silver Crystal at their debate, and it took most of his willpower not to bow to her. Usage of awe may arise from their connections to the people of Earth. Awe was not directly used for getting nations to join Crystal Tokyo–that was primarily master-level statecraft, leadership, and technology

The Silver and Golden Crystals' ability to cause awe only works a short distance around the user. It is not country-wide! That is still extremely powerful considering the increase of efficiency that Crystal Tokyo politicians and diplomats seem to get from it.

Long Lifespan

Crystal Tokyo people can live into the hundreds--perhaps even to a thousand or more? Chalk that up to advanced medical technology, a very well-functioning healthcare system, and the power of the Silver Crystal.

Neo-Queen Serenity has such power over the Silver Crystal that its effects apply to every citizen of Crystal Tokyo. It is not just a localized effect. I think this is another reason so many countries joined her. It is a large section of her Star Seed, so there is no removing it. The Silver Crystal can also revive people, as she revived the four Shitennou when they were previously slaughtered. There is an urban legend that death itself is scared of her, and I am inclined to agree.

That is also a big reason why Crystal Tokyo professionals are so skilled. Professor Lohengramm, for instance, got his PhD in 2040 and has spent the remaining half-century or so studying America ever since and is the foremost expert of post-2008 America, above any of our own historians about ourselves. (And yes, he studied us prior to getting his PhD too.) For a canon character, Director Ami Mizuno (Sailor Mercury) is a master at almost every field of science and engineering, possible due to the longer lifespan and access to archeotechnology from the old Moon Kingdom thousands of years ago. To add another example, Motoki Furuhata specializes in computing technology and robotics– and has also become an expert in those fields, one of the best in the world.

So, you have situations like that where some people have spent ninety years or more honing their craft. You can see why no American can compare at this point. Yes, the longer lifespan + always being in their prime are big reasons Crystal Tokyo has such extremely competent personnel.

I've forgotten to mention that I'd envision her Senshi costume as a combo of the sailor uniform & cowboy outfits - maybe some fanartists could realize that by traditional means or using AI. :D

Sailor Guardians and Sentinel Movies, Anime, Etc.

I decided to do another pop-culture entry. What some movies may look like...

There were various versions of the “Adventures of the Sailor Guardians” made by Crystal Tokyo studios. The anime boom that occurred since 2000 when it was discovered that anime heroes (in the form of the Sailor Guardians) existed affected every other form of visual media. National heroes were great at inspiring people, and many countries have made mythologies of them. And so it was with the Sailor Guardians. Their stories have become legendary–the skill and benevolence of the magical girl warriors influencing everyone else around them.

It was not only their stories that became important. So many films, anime, video games, and other media featured great heroes specifically designed in imitation of the Sailor Guardians and their sovereign. This only increased as more countries joined Crystal Tokyo. As for America, how could it keep up in this regard? Well, enter its last hero.

The Sentinel of Liberty was a major part of some movies, anime, and television. This happened before and after his demise. Some of these works were made in Hollywood in an attempt to raise the spirits of the Americans. Propaganda has always been used to raise the people’s morale, and post-Crash America was no exception. The last American hero did not play himself, but okayed scripts when he was alive.

A wider television series, “Super Soldier Sentinel of Liberty”, was a display of his entire career from his creation in 2080 to the end of the referendum in 2099–with a few exceptions. Since featuring the Sailor Guardians or Neo-Queen Serenity requires likeness permission from the Department of the Arts, they did not appear. This led to some oddities like the Sentinel clearing the Mount Enigma site with more ease than he actually did, and him realizing he needs to play a political role after the Professor debate instead of after his debate loss to Neo-Queen Serenity (which goes unseen for likeness reasons;“The Professor” goes unnamed, but it is clear who this is based off.). Despite some factual irregularities, the show was well-received.

The depiction of the last American hero did not cease after his annihilation. Sentinel of Liberty and the Revanchists was a film produced in 2101, one year after the USA was absorbed. This was a very anime-styled film. It described the Sentinel stopping attacks caused by the Revanchists, an American criminal organization, in 2096-early 2098. The Revanchists often attacked companies that were owned by Crystal Tokyo-based subsidiaries–but the Sentinel would help the police stop them. This was not just for altruistic reasons: he did not want the situation to escalate in Crystal Tokyo pulling support, which would be even more crippling.

The director decided to allude to the adventures of the Sailor Guardians when the Sentinel (obviously not played by himself!) confronted the last of the Revanchists on the “Raid on Anaheim Electronics” (Based in Anaheim, California. Robotics company that sells to both the USA and Crystal Tokyo, recently bought by a company based in the latter.)

“Trying to raid a company that is heavily invested in the American economy… Unforgivable! A handsome soldier who fights for truth and the American Way, that would be me, the Sentinel of Liberty. And in the name of justice, I will punish you.”

(Yes, this is an obvious allusion to the “In the Name of the Moon” speech given by Sailor Moon, now Neo-Queen Serenity. The director was a big fan of the Sailor Guardians.)

The Sentinel was viewed in a decent light because many Crystal Tokyo officials including the Sailor Guardians respected him for what he represented, even if they might not have respected America at the time of its downfall. Even Neo-Queen Serenity respected him. (In turn, he respected her and the Sailor Guardians for the good they did for the entire Earth and beyond.) Deliberately showing the last American hero fighting a problem of America’s own creation (the Revanchists) also allows for further cooperation: if America’s last hero could recognize that type of problem, all of us could.

There was even a popular art piece called “The Sentinel Climbs Golgotha” about him trudging towards the Crystal Palace after the absorption of the United States, where he would meet his inevitable end. It is supposed to equate the Sentinel with Jesus, dying for the sins of the (American) people.

Novels, TV Shows, and Movies: 2099-onwards

There was a boom of movies, television, anime, books, and video games about the 2088-2099 United States of America. Not just in the country itself trying to explain to its citizens what was going on, or to propose possible solutions to the economic disaster, but there was also interest in that field from Crystal Tokyo authors. From those authors, media about downfall-era America actually increased after its absorption–partially to describe the recovery process, but also because there was now easier access.

In terms of video games, 2088-2099 America was described as some combination of Grand Theft Auto and the Old West–replete with gun violence, crime, wide-open adventure, and stunning heists. Of course, this was often an exaggeration: local police forces usually dealt with heists. Crime novels–not just about the gangsters and outlaws, but also about police and detectives–were also popular during this time period. The “Detectives of Dallas” series (featuring police detectives in Dallas, Texas, USA) was a highly successful detective mystery series based on various violent crimes there. The main protagonist, Jamal Andrews, solves cases when they appear and gives the local police force evidence to tie a crime to a specific culprit. The forensic and historical accuracy of the series was often praised. There was at least some basis in fact to the crime genre though despite the exaggerated crime rate: there remained a high crime rate by American standards, partially caused by lack of funds for crime mitigation programs (economic disaster) and other systemic problems.

What would “The Last Great American Novel” be like? The concept of the “Great American Novel” has been around in the United States of America for over a century. I’m thinking that since the “Great American Novel” expresses the concerns and beliefs of America (so is democratic in form for instance) and encompasses the whole nation (or at least is not that regional)--what could this be like? Something that captured the American soul at that time: a snapshot of the national mood. Well, I think it would be something like The Jungle by Upton Sinclair mixed with The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. An American criticism of its own mishandling of the situation and showing how regular people suffer from the federal mismanagement. In many ways, much of the literature had throwbacks to the “muckrakers”, writers and novelists of the early 1900s who used their writing to highlight societal problems.

It was not just in novels that the politics of post-Crash America have been explained and mercilessly criticized. This also occurred in the popular television show “The Center Cannot Hold”. This can best be described as House of Cards meets West Wing meets Monty Python. American politics played completely for farce. Gordon era being helpless to do anything about the crash followed by Rogers era trying desperately to keep above water and failing horribly. Everything is played for comedy, with the ineptitude of American politicians trying to gain power over each other contrasted to the efficiency of the Crystal Tokyo system. In the end, it all comes crashing down as the referendum occurs and everyone is forced to retire.

The literature and movie scenes were often not kind to post-Crash America, especially compared to the nostalgia for 1990s-2000s America at its peak, or in previous eras.

Science Fiction will get its own category--stay tuned for it. There will also be something on the space side too!

Very short update:

Neo-Queen Serenity walks into the Sailor Guardian Assembly Chamber in the Galactic Coalition Headquarters, where all new Sailor Guardians are supposed to meet the greatest of their order.

After making a speech, she is about to leave when she finds something surprising with one of the new Sailor Guardians, and steps closer. “Wait… something is very familiar about you, Sailor Zacharia. It’s a presence I have felt fifteen years ago.”

Zacharia is very surprised to see the greatest of the Sailor Guardians talk to her directly.

“What do you mean, Neo-Queen Serenity?”

Serenity states, “You are the reincarnation of the Sentinel of Liberty. A piece of him may have survived long enough to tell you about who he is.”

The realization comes to Sailor Zacharia that the person behind the blast that obliterated the Sentinel is now standing in front of her. The normally awe-inducing presence becomes ominous.

Zacharia asks pleadingly, “You killed him. Why?”

The sovereign of Earth responds, “He wanted a good death. He could not live after his country was absorbed. When the Americans joined me, he saw no reason to live anymore. I respected him, so I granted the death he sought out. Afterwards, I sent his soul to the galaxy cauldron to be reborn, and you are the result. I think you will go far as a Sailor Guardian, and I am proud of you.”

The new Sailor Guardian answers, “Thank you so much, Neo-Queen Serenity. I understand. This was a second chance.”

Sailor Moon, Crystal Tokyo, and Various Headcanons

Headcanon: All the Sailor Guardians’ parents are fully in support of them at least in the Crystal Tokyo era, with the sole exception of Rei’s father. That man was only in it for his own power and was quickly exposed for it. He defected to the USA as seen in the very first page, but little useful information was gotten out of him. He died before the Sentinel’s time (so before 2080).

Headcanon: Diseases

There was a pandemic in the 2020s in the Crystal Tokyo timeline, but there the vaccine development was quicker and there was a much reduced death toll. Credit once more goes to Crystal Tokyo. Even the Sentinel has to admit that they played a role in solving almost every crisis since 2008. From diseases to climate change and many more--I suppose that was a big reason why so many countries joined them.

There was a bird flu epidemic in the USA in 2090-early 2092. It became way worse due to the collapse of the American healthcare system, which was already overpriced and barely functional. The main reason it was solved was because Crystal Tokyo sent out a mass vaccination research initiative which led to vaccines and treatments being discovered in relatively short order.

In both cases, Director Ami Mizuno (Sailor Mercury) spearheaded the vaccination research!

Headcanon: The Crystal Tokyo legislators, Sailor Guardians, and Neo-Queen Serenity are much more in touch than post Crash American politicians due to the super empathy capabilities of the Silver Crystal. Also lobbying doesn't exist over there so there is that. The Sentinel does not agree with this sentiment.

Headcanon: America became post-racial starting 2060 because Neo-Queen Serenity and Crystal Tokyo (who have always been post-racial for obvious reasons) are perceived as such great threats to the United States of America that every kind of American needed to work together to keep their country afloat. We did it, King Endymion! We solved racism!

Headcanon: The Urban Ruin

In Detroit, Michigan, the auto industry leaving in the 2080s combined with most other industries leaving by 2088 led to most of the people going too, and leaving behind an urban ruin. There were very many abandoned buildings, and exploration was haunting. The US government also ran out of money to solve the infrastructure problems there, preferring to resettle the people elsewhere where there are more jobs and opportunities. Most American cities have not fallen to that degree of ruin. Sure, there are big infrastructure problems, but Detroit is a special case because almost every industry left partially due to Crystal Tokyo having industries that easily outcompete them.

The city was completely rebuilt not long after the United States ceased to exist. The resulting construction was unlike anything else seen in the USA and more resembled new cities built in Crystal Tokyo.

Headcanon: Watchers of the Deep Core

This is the star nation that was formed after Shadow Galactica collapsed. It is currently the second-greatest power in the Milky Way galaxy besides Crystal Tokyo. Centered at Sagittarius Zero Star, right at the Galaxy Cauldron, this country was founded for one purpose: as a buffer against Chaos in the Galaxy Cauldron. Its government is structured so it cannot become a big threat like Shadow Galactica if its leader is controlled by Chaos. Mamoru Chiba played a role in shaping this government.

The Galactic Coalition Headquarters is on Sagittarius Zero Star and used to be Galactica Palace. The entrance to the Galaxy Cauldron is there, as it was for Galactica Palace. There is also the Sailor Guardian Assembly Chamber, which is used for Sailor Guardians all across the galaxy to meet.

Reminding me of the Jedi Council & Coruscant, respectively. lol
Yes, I did use the Jedi Council and Star Wars as inspirations!

Headcanon: Sailor Animamates

The Sailor Animamates were reborn as actual Sailor Guardians after their deaths. The timetable between death and revival depended on how long it took for the Galaxy Cauldron to purify their souls. Sailor Moon saw this as their atonement/redemption.

Crystal Tokyo Galactic Diplomacy

The end of the USA taught Neo-Queen Serenity a bit more. Getting planetary unification was good practice to get every major galactic polity working together like a well-oiled machine. As she and the Sailor Guardians solved the problems on Earth, they would do the same in the wider galaxy. Getting a leadership position in the Galactic Coalition after achieving planetary unification helped very much in reducing conflicts between galactic powers. Someone with a leadership position had the authority to reform galactic politics to not only better fight Chaos, but also make everyday lives better. The lesson learned from the Sentinel is that many nations and people would fight tooth and nail for their beliefs; Neo-Queen Serenity would not take such a direct approach for the rest of the galaxy, as she did not need that.

Incorporation of areas into Crystal Tokyo was often difficult, but Neo-Queen Serenity and the Sailor Guardians pulled it off with a minimum of conflicts. Likewise, so did they accomplish the process of fixing the galaxy. Big social changes were often viewed with suspicion, but the resulting prosperity and equality caused most doubters to be ridiculed. Economic and diplomatic pressure solved many conflicts like the Lethe vs. Memnosyne feud (partially solved by moving much of the population off their original planets to settle more productive frontier ones. That was not possible prior since those planets had poor travel capacity.) Similar tactics occurred to get everyone in the Galactic Coalition on the same page on fighting Chaos entities and promoting high standards of living.

Study of original Moon Kingdom computing (of course done by Crystal Tokyo scientists) has led to vast improvements in DNA and quantum computing. Computers have changed so much since the glory days of the United States of America. Much of this technological improvement in Crystal Tokyo has made computers without peer, and this technology was disseminated among other members of the Galactic Coalition. Energy production technologies and nanotechnology also spread far and wide; successful strategies on Earth seeing galactic counterparts. Many star nations saw their economies heavily boosted by Crystal Tokyo technologies. As a result, they became staunch allies and gave Neo-Queen Serenity even more influence. This was on top of how well she was respected for saving the entire galaxy in the Shadow Galactica War.

Thankfully, most countries and star nations were at least willing to improve the livelihoods of their people. The end of Shadow Galactica in the 1990s meant that many worlds terrified of Sailor Galaxia could finally start improving themselves. As worlds Part of this was the influence of the Sailor Guardians. With the exception of Shadow Galactica, Sailor Guardians tended to fight for justice and knew evil when they saw it. As a result, many of them became big forces for change within their societies. Meeting each other allowed for cross-cultural exchange; meeting Neo-Queen Serenity gave many Sailor Guardians across many planets a guiding light to aspire to.

The end result was that by 2125, Crystal Tokyo had already made massive strides in improving the galaxy and its nations. There was still plenty of room for improvement, but the Sailor Guardians and their queen saw this as a good start.

Well, maybe it's time to wrap this up... unless you guys have more ideas.

The Moral Argument: Theming of Sailor Moon and the End of America

In the Sailor Moon Universe, good usually triumphs over evil. It might be very difficult, and it might take a long time, but the end result is the same (aside from maybe the Sailor Cosmos timeline). Moral righteousness is one of the greatest advantages a person or a side can have in that universe, as can be seen by the Sailor Guardians, who represent morality and justice, consistently beating every threat the galaxy can throw at them. So how does this work in the Crystal Tokyo era? It is not just the efficiency and technological advantages that make countries want to join them, but also the unwavering morality that Crystal Tokyo provides–people and countries knew that they were doing the right thing. With such moral guides as Neo-Queen Serenity and the Sailor Guardians, the citizens of Crystal Tokyo were content knowing they were on the right side of history. For that, many of them performed diligently and admirably in the service of their nation. They really do love their country.

This was not true for the United States of America from 2040 onwards. Political division, disagreements on what constituted “American values”, and cascades of questionable decisions by its government (combined with constantly losing allies and falling behind technologically) caused many Americans to doubt whether or not their government was in the right direction–and how to fix the government when it was clearly going poorly. For foreign studiers–which often happened due to the greater opportunities abroad–this was especially prevalent: many American foreign learners did not return home out of disgust for their country.

By the time of the 2090s, a lack of belief in the USA was so bad that not even the Sentinel and Rogers could fix it.

“The Americans often doubt that their government is right. That is easy to see with not only their mismanagement of the whole rivalry, but also the ethically questionable decisions of their own government. We have no such concerns. We do not think that our country and our cause are just. We know it.”

-Professor Lohengramm

“When have you needed to make a meaningful moral decision? Your queen and the Sailor Guardians have already done this and all you need to do is follow them to do right. It is far harder for us as Americans to do the right actions–but also more meaningful because we need to decide for ourselves.”

-President Rogers

The disillusionment Americans faced with their country can be most graphically seen in the Sentinel of Liberty vs. Neo-Queen Serenity battle: the embodiment of America’s values and ideals calls on the love Americans have for their country. There is not nearly enough to make a substantial difference. When this fails, he calls on “all the patriotism Americans will ever have for their country.” This comes with the fatal flaw of burning the USA’s future away to try and fruitlessly save its present, and not even that works. There is so little belief in the United States of America that it is nearly powerless compared to the belief Neo-Queen Serenity has in her husband and her friends. With that, good has decisively defeated moral ambiguity.

Most people don't make the practical decisions themselves on how their country is run, but they do decide on who can make those decisions - in this respect Crystal Tokyo & America is similar despite their different systems. And at the very end it's the quality of people - both the rulers & the ruled - that matters. :)

Neo-Queen Serenity and her daughter Chibiusa get their best birthday present yet... planetary unification.

Sentinel: "Neo-Queen Serenity seriously planned our demise to occur on her birthday. I can't help but be slightly amused by this, even if thinking about the demise of my country causes me to internally writhe in pain! Not that it will matter soon because in four days, I will head to my glorious death."

July 4th Update

Sailor Moon/Neo-Queen Serenity wanting the Sentinel of Liberty to die on US Independence Day might be poetic. However, I doubt that she would plan someone’s death on a specific day. Sailor Moon has always been someone who sees violence as a last resort, and she tries to redeem her opponents whenever possible. There have been several cases in-canon where she states that fighting has no purpose. In this scenario, she does the same, but is unable to convince her opponent to back down. This is especially disappointing for her since for once, her opponent is not a bad person or a piece of Chaos.

Why the Sentinel of Liberty dies on July 4th might be because he wants to die on an important day for his country to give his death more significance. Dying on Independence Day would make his sacrifice for the sins of the United States more iconic. It would also be better than fading away–a wretched fate that he fears will happen to him when people stop believing in the USA and its ideals. Although–it says something that it took the greatest sovereign in the galaxy ever to cause the United States to ultimately fall, and it held the line for one hundred years. Or maybe it’s a mix of both: the great heroes of both countries recognize the significance of the proposed fight/death date.

There is also irony considering how the battle, if you can call it that, turns up. Sailor Moon has always been about triumphing over immense odds and oftentimes fate itself. Now, she is that insurmountable odds. The wall of power that the Sentinel can barely scratch; the end of his country despite every American effort. Usually, final battles are the culmination of her efforts to vanquish a great evil and safeguard the Earth, or the entire galaxy for that matter. In the Crystal Tokyo era, the Sentinel battle is an afterthought compared to the national struggle that led to the end of the United States of America. The Sentinel of Liberty and the United States have already lost before such a fight even occurred. While the American government system had held the line for a century, it eventually collapsed under its own weight. Nothing is at stake at this point–the Sentinel of Liberty cannot seriously harm Sailor Moon/Neo-Queen Serenity despite his immense power. All that remains is to put a fading exemplar of a country out of his misery at his request.
