So what the hell was all the censorship about?! Getting rid of Beryl being stabbed in the stomach, corpses melting, Demande strangling a kid to death… If Crystal was really aimed at adults why was it so much tamer than the manga which wasn’t even adult aimed either but for tweens-preteens?
Because it is a shoujo series, and, maybe (?) Naoko was transgressive in some ways when she wrote the original story.

Crystal was aimed at adult fans, but it's not an adult series.

Btw, why are people constantly linking melted skulls to terms like adult/mature?

What I mean is that you can have a shoujo anime aimed at adult fans…

but some of Naoko’s ideas and things that she drew back in the 90s maybe (?) do not belong in a shoujo anime.

I agree. It was revolutionary back then. Back then. I think that scene was omitted in Crystal, wasn't it?

CLAMP should hire Naoko and let her finish X/1999 or let her create her own horror manga with grisly images.

:kero:
lol Naoko should stay as far away as possible from this graphic perfection that was X in the last published volumes. This was Clamp peak art for me.

Or perhaps CLAMP should do another story for Miyuki Chan in Wonderland named Miyuki Chan in Sailor Moon Land, where the Senshi blast the clothes off Miyuki.

More precisely w/ the bolded texts I added in the above quote. :)
Much better.

Even unfinished, X is perfect. Naoko would draw black blobs with white eyes, nonsensical messy lines and rose petals left right and centre.

Rayearth was TMS, just like with the TV series.

Can “Sailor Moon” be animated by a studio other than TOEI, though?

I am no expert, but I believe that TOEI also owns ”Sailor Moon.” Therefore, it is not fair to compare Crystal and Eternal to anime titles and films made by other studios.

I know that people love the 90’s anime, but most, if not all of the people responsible for the 90’s anime have left TOEI. I am not a fan of Ikuhara’s style, personally, but he left TOEI a long time ago, or am I wrong?

If you want to make a fair comparison, you should compare Crystal and Eternal to other anime titles and films made by TOEI, e.g. “Precure,” “Saint Seiya Saintia Sho,” “One Piece.”

Saintia Sho shouldn't count since they had that fully outsourced to Gonzo and it got the same Gonzo treatment that people hated them for in the 2000s.

Toei has some ownership so I don't know if any other studio could animate without permission....for instance Deen. I'm also pretty sure Toei's best animators are going to be put where "their profits" are maximized.

I would imagine a show like Sailor Moon these days would be beautifully animated and consistent compared to other shows like DBZ, One Piece, or Pretty Cure which often has lots of action scenes, especially DBZ. The movies look pretty nice from what I've observed.

It could also be that most of the older adults are not too focused on the animation being flashy and flawless...though we have had some scenes that are really unforgivable.

I think the minute they opened their mouths about attracting new young fans they should have made sure the fantasy, magical elements were top notch.

After lurking this forum for a couple months I know there's a strange mix of Takeuchi hate and wishful thinking leading people to speculate that Toei actually owns Sailor Moon in some capacity and Takeuchi is just pretending she's in control, but just to set the record straight, that's not true.

If you look at the copyright information at the official website, there's a long list with several different copyright combinations, the main one being Naoko Takeuchi and then a bunch of various combinations between Naoko Takeuchi - PNP and production committees.

Toei is a rightsholder in two of these combinations: "© Naoko Takeuchi-PNP/Kodansha/Toei Animation" and "© Naoko Takeuchi-PNP/Toei Animation". The former, which includes Kodansha, is a combination used for Crystal merchandise. The second, which is the one that would most directly involve Toei, is the one used for the 90s anime and its merchandise.

Interestingly enough, Toei should be a copyright holder for the Eternal and Cosmos movies but the copyright omits Toei and lists the Production Commitees instead. Even the official Cosmos movie website and the credits for Eternal list PNP/the Production Committee as right holders instead of Toei itself.

Anyway, in the end Toei is not listed as a copyright holder for any other product or adaptation, and Takeuchi-PNP is the only constant rightsholder in every single one. We can split hairs about how without Toei and Osabu Sailor Moon wouldn't really exist and all that behind-the-scenes trivia, but at the end of the day, the rights of the baseline work are held by Takeuchi alone, and Toei only holds rights for the adaptations they made.

So, in theory, an anime adaptation by another studio would be possible as long as it doesn't use any elements from the Toei adaptation(s). We've seen that as long as authors retain the rights, they can switch studios: Kazuki Takahashi went from Toei to Gallop for Yu-Gi-Oh!, Masami Kurumada and Teshirogi went from Toei to TMS for Saint Seiya The Lost Canvas... CLAMP themselves switched between Bee Train and IG for Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle. I'm sure there are more examples of this, so for Sailor Moon it should also be able to happen at Takeuchi's discretion.

I’d honestly be surprised with a Versace or Atelier Versace collaboration.

Versus and Versace Jeans Couture, the cheaper lines for young people, would do it.

Karl Lagerfeld has a collab with Donald Duck right now.

Again, because the Jimmy Choo collab was successful, many things are possible.
