Is there a reason the '90's made Mamoru such an asshole?

Just watched the curry episode. That scene where Mamoru leaves her in the grocery store is just cold. Even if they were broken up his attitude towards her that whole episode just struck me as him being an @$$hole. Then there's the first season where he bullies her and even makes her cry. Why make him such a jerk?

The anime basically took Mamoru’s somewhat stuck up demeanor in the first act of the manga and cranked it up to 11. I think the anime staff enjoyed the dramatic irony of Usagi being in love with Tuxedo Mask but hating his civilian identity. It’s a fairly common trope.

The anime staff also didn’t seem to find Mamoru that interesting as Usagi’s boyfriend. Or at least doesn’t find them as a couple to be interesting. Having Mamoru have no memories of the past in the Makai Tree arc and then the whole break-up sub plot in the Black Moon arc was obviously done to keep things “interesting”’ and once that was done Mamoru’s screentime was severely reduced in S and SuperS and then they just wrote him out in Sailor Stars.

It a sad how downplay Mamoriu was in the anime. In the manga he had powers, development, and was loving.

dont know thats why in the 90s im most team seiya than mamoru, but wow in the manga mamoru is a loving caring guy even some people thing bad about him but, god is much lovable and try to be more with usagi
and his teasing isnt much mean than in the 90s, like usagi oh so called friends were so mean in the 90s too
and i know 90s usagi is more annoying too

I think Rei and Mamoru are the characters that differ the most from their manga counterparts. Aside from Rei’s grandfather, which was essentially created by TOEI itself. For comic relief. :orly:
So...Rei lives all by her lonesome? Her and Mako should try being room mates. That'd be a fun fanfiction.

Rei is self-sufficient. She loves her spirituality and being a shrine maiden and she knows that her mission in life is to be a senshi to protect her Princess and the world. That is how the character was written, in my opinion.

If I actually wanted to write a fanfiction of this premise, it'd be Mako getting spooked by some rough neighbors or something cause Rei definitely gives the monk vibe.

He isn't an asshole and there really isn't that much difference between Mamoru in the 90s anime vs the manga. Yeah he has his asshole moments so does Usagi, the other Senshi and really everyone else. Why people harp on Mamoru's or Chibiusa's bad moments in the 90s anime when many characters had far worse either assholish or even moral things the characters do I will never understand. Many people mention Seiya and yet Seiya was mainly only into Usagi because she reminded her of Princess Kakyuu oh and in terms of being an asshole she even wanted to kill that Nun Akane Gushinken who was turned into a Phage even though she knew that Sailor Moon could heal Phages and if Sailor Mars didn't basically threaten to kill Sailor Star Fighter she might have tried to kill Akane as Sailor Director. You could maybe explain it as I don't know some PTSD on Seiya's part but it still isn't a good look.

I can't stand Seiya to be fair.

There’s not much difference between Mamoru from S onward to manga Mamoru but honestly Mamoru in Classic and R is pretty different than the manga. I like Usagi and Mamoru’s dynamic in the first season so I’m not horribly upset by that change. In the manga he was kind of just “pretty boy love interest”
