I think I'm going to wait until Madman releases Sailor Moon Crystal on Blu-Ray and DVD. I'm not going to purchase Viz Media's sets until I know how the PQ is. The last thing I want is to spend almost a lifetime trying to sell their sets on eBay and Gumtree...

It shouldn't look as bad as the 90s anime but as mentioned before, Subatomic's track record with HD shows is not that great either.

Spoiler: show
Example 1: Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit

JP [2012] | Media Blasters (US) [2011] | Viz (US) [2014]
JP [2012] | Media Blasters (US) [2011] | Viz (US) [2014]
JP [2012] | Media Blasters (US) [2011] | Viz (US) [2014]
JP [2012] | Media Blasters (US) [2011] | Viz (US) [2014]
JP [2012] | Media Blasters (US) [2011] | Viz (US) [2014]
JP [2012] | Media Blasters (US) [2011] | Viz (US) [2014]

More screencaps here.

In addition to being released before Japan, Media Blasters' release was also in 1080i which is why their discs look worse (and their video guy at the time tried to defend it) so Viz's release is slightly better in comparison but still not great as there was also a report of ghosting too (see here).

Example 2: Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/108249 - 9 sets of images in this link

There were also reports of problems with the audio on both English & Japanese versions (see here, here & here)

There's also Ranma ½ but the only know video problem there, in addition to the new DVDs being pillarboxed, was ghosting present on the first opening but that was only on the first disc of set 1 and was gone in later discs.

Subatomic's only decent authoring job imo was recently with Death Note's Blu-ray because despite being an upscale, they fixed some problems that were in the DVDs (no green tint, no overlays and the Japanese openings & endings are restored along with the sponsor cards). For a comparison see here.

Hopefully whoever gets the set first can post comparisons of the Japanese & Viz discs and as for Madman, here's hoping they actually include whatever extras Viz has planned for Crystal this time.

I've had pretty good experiences with receiving madman packages- everything is well packed and not damaged (but I live locally in Australia so maybe its different...?)
I actually can't believe Vizmedia have yet to release Sailor Moon S, considering Madman started releasing Sailor Moon way after, but now have pretty much caught up.

I wrote up a review/unboxing of the DVDs so far if anyone is interested :)

So excited for Crystal :O

I saw the same thing with my copy, it is odd it would be like that when in the original Jap version it only played the four split screen version.

Maybe Madman wanted us to hear Moonlight Densetsu twice for that episode! ^_^'

Im surprised that nobody mentioned the r dvds haves the previews back to being swithed.

Yeah, I noticed that and was disappointed. If anyone has a Twitter account, could you possibly tweet Madman about the pre-episode clips being out of order, so they can correct their error on future sets? Also, if there are any more erroneous subs in the Viz sets, it would be a good idea to tweet about those as well.

The heck? It sure isn't final because that artwork still has that logo of the Brazilian company who released that DVD.

Does anyone know if the individual volume releases have identical discs to the box sets? The disc artwork seems to be identical. My disc 1 from the Sailor Moon R part 1 limited edition set got cracked around the hub ring and I don't want to pay $50 for a replacement set. I'd rather just buy the single volume once it's released.
