this debunks the myth that Usagi and Mamoru are together just because of the past
In the anime, it would still be Mamoru x Rei if it weren't for the flash backs.
just because they went out three times doesn't mean that they were in love... Mamoru never returned her feelings. It was painfully obvious that he was not really interested in her. He wouldn't even pick up the phone... So what if they went out? He was a single and lonely, but not really interested in her. Or do you really think that he was heart-broken because Rei didn't love him back?

It was even said in the anime that when you risk your life for someone it means True Love. Rei gave up on Mamoru because she learned that Mamoru didn't really care for her. It was obvious to her that Usagi was important to Mamoru because he risked his LIFE for her. She even SLAPPED Usagi.

And the flash backs didn't change their feelings at all. As you can read Usagi's feelings for him didn't change, she was just naïve and didn't undertand the extent of her feelings.

The whole Mamoru Rei Usagi thing was another love triangle, this is an anime not rocket science! The idea behind it was for US the audience to see that Usagi was actually JEALOUS of Rei.

Luna says it: "She's just jealous, plain and simple"

And what are love triangles? Just obstacles for the main couple to get together.

And Rei wasn't really in love with him either. She liked him but never really loved him. Near the end it was obvious that she really fell for yuchiru ( can't spell)

In her monologue she doesn't refer to Mamoru, but the guy that she always fights with!

When I was a child as soon as I saw Rei fighting with that guy, I knew that she actually LIKED him a lot, hence her behaviour.

This is an extract from Rei's Monologue.

" I always say what I'm thinking, so often I'm disliked. But, that is my gentle feeling. I wonder if it's wrong for me to say things bluntly to the person I can love and believe in.

Maybe it's not created by intimate people, who love each other and believe in their relationship. I feel that when people in love appreciate each other's faults, intimacy is born and nurtured."

Again, I didn't create these monologues. All this is from the anime and if the creators of the anime say that Usagi liked Mamoru then she liked him. If they say that Mamoru's first love was a failure because it was one-sided, then it was (or so he thought). And if they say that Rei actually fell for the guy she's always fighting with and insulting then she did.

And after all this whole story and idea is by Naoko Takeuchi and if she says that Mamoru and Usagi will always be together no matter what, then they will. It doesn't matter whether it's anime, manga or whatever... The anime is just the animated version of a manga, the characters are the SAME and the feelings are the SAME. They just create love triangles and side-plots in order to give the mangaka time to come up with more manga issues.

And they would always end up together (even in the anime) because of the whole RED STRING OF FATE. That invisible string that binds them together can't be SEVERED. It means that they can't stop loving each other because they are twin souls. Corny, i know, but I didn't come up with the idea.

No it wouldn't because Mamoru and Rei were never actually together. Mamoru at best thought of Rei as more of a little sister and Rei thought more of their relationship then what it was. Plus as we see in the Makaiju arc they would still come together and be drawn toward each other even still. I imagined if there was no flashback Usagi and Mamoru would still get together which would cause some hostility with Rei but as we saw on the anime Rei would eventually accept it.

I don't see any chemistry between anime Rei and Mamoru. But when playing Another Story, I actually like the fact she fantasizes about Mamoru.

Hmmm. Could it be Rei's maltreatment of Usagi comes from jealousy? But she did had the B-factor already when they first met.

Ok, here's my interpretation of some of the events. Hope you don't mind that I added my two cents to things. ^_^

There’s no doubt Usagi is deeply in love with Mamoru. And, the idea that they only continue to love each other because of their past lives seems silly to me.

But, I do not believe Usagi was in love with Mamoru before she regained her memories. At best, it was a light hearted crush. Really, Pre Memory Usagi shows far more of an attraction to Motoki than Mamoru in the earlier episodes.

In Usagi’s first monologue, the third paragraph shows that it was spoken after she regained her memories. This makes it a little difficult to use this monologue as proof that Usagi was in love with Mamoru before she had her memories. If the very last paragraph had been omitted, and it was spoken by pre-memory Usagi, I would most likely read it as infatuation and a crush. But, because she’s looking at Mamoru through the filter of her memories, her own reflection of her pre-memory relationship with him has most likely changed, now that she has the added depth of an entire life’s worth of memories of the two of them together and knowing that he is Tuxedo Mask, the one that always saved her in a pinch.

I base this on ep 34. Right when she discovers that he’s Tuxedo Mask, the recent past of them interacting (in this life) starts playing, with romantic music and a fuzzy mood. In fact, the very first memory she replays is when they first met, and Mamoru tells her to “study harder, Dumpling head.” The actual event was not fuzzy, or warm, or endearing. In fact, Mamoru even had different clothes on, and a totally different expression, and he had shades on. (animation continuity error? lol) I didn’t think it was the same scene, except for the fact that the paper he’s holding up (in the memory version) shows a 30%, (which is what Usagi got on her test in the first ep). In the memory, he’s smiling softly to her, and it’s much warmer, and he tells her in a nice tone that she needs to study harder. In the actual event, he’s frowning at her, in shades, and telling her in a semi-sarcastic way she needs to study harder. It’s the same with the other events. Each event is shown in a whole new light, with a much warmer fuzzy tone to it, while the actual event was not. This shows to me that her recollection of him is now biased, because she’s seeing everything through the filter of suddenly knowing that he’s Tuxedo Mask. She overlays her own feelings and glosses over what really happened, and how she was really feeling at the time each event occurred, now that she sees him as Tuxedo mask.

I also had something to say about Mamoru protecting Usagi in episode 34. If it’s when the ice crystal nearly falls, it seems like it’s something any decent person would do, especially a man. He pushed her down and ended up sideways with his arm over her… not exactly on top of her, like to the side. To me, that seems like something most people would do to protect another human being. (At least, I would.) Now, what’s interesting is when usage is Sailormoon, Tuxedo Mask does risk his life to protect her, by getting in the way of Zoicite’s crystal. To me, that shows a whole different dimension of protection. When she was Sailormoon, he felt a duty to protect her as Tuxedo Mask, while as Mamoru, he pushed her down and to the side.

This is the largest problem I have with these two. While I have no doubt that they both love and care for each other, the way they reached that point seems like a cop out to me. If they had been left to their own devices, and let their relationship mature in a natural, non forced way, I would have liked them as a couple much more than I do. To me, Usagi suddenly discovering Mamoru is Tuxedo mask, and then on top of that regaining her memories, makes the progression of their relationship seem unnatural to me. It went from a crush to a deep deep love, in such a short short time, which isn’t realistic to me. That's the main issue I have with it.

If they had been left alone, and not been forced into the roles of Sailormoon and Tuxedo Mask, and if they didn't have the added bonus of an entire lifetime of past memories that may make their feelings biased unconsciously... I don't know what would have happened. Would they have ended up together? I think there's a good possibility they would have. But, I don't think suddenly forcing them both to fall deeply in love because of alternate personalities or past lives is the right way to go about developing a relationship. It should have developed slowly and gradually. They were at the point where they were both starting to like each other... and all that was just crushed when they regained their memories and that soft lighthearted feeling that they both were developing unnaturally skipped right into a full blown love. I liked when that soft atmosphere right before she discovered he was Tuxedo Mask (in the elevator). I liked how it was starting to slowly warm up into something more than just teasing. I felt cheated that it suddenly went from that to a full blown love. It didn't help that right after that, Tuxedo Mask was kidnapped and brainwashed, further messing up the relationship that could have been slowly developing. It just seems far too rushed to me because of the circumstances both of them were thrown in.

This is one of the reasons why I liked how their relationship was handled in the manga better than the anime. There, they did start out antagonistic and immature with bickering, but then they eventually started to use more humane words when they kept running into each other. And the revelation of each other's identities was a more gradual process that had each of them hinting at the other's identity for a while, until it was finally revealed to both parties as to who the other was. Then their memories get restored much later, allowing them to grow closer as friends and even as a potential (but not yet official) couple before their past lives come into play. But Mamoru does still get kidnapped right after their memories return, though. But it's not as much of a slap in the face as it was in the anime. The anime was really to unkind their relationship like this.

I have a hard time with the idea that her memories are how the events really played out. I watched the first memory of when they met, and the actual scene side by side, and I just can't see it. He comes off as sounding snotty in the actual event to me, and not as someone who was trying to genuinely give her advice to study. He seemed like a pretty big jerk in the early episodes to me. Someone who was kind and gave her advice would be Momoki, in my opinion. While Mamo was just being snotty at times. But, I think it could also be a form of pulling pigtails on the playground (pun not intended.. or maybe it is P-: ). I don't know, the early anime Mamo just doesn't seem that kind to Usagi me. But... he's at least more interesting than the later Mamo in my opinion. :P My favorite anime version of Mamoru is when he starts acting nicer to Usagi... but still teasing, but in a nicer way. Like in episode 34, before he gained his memories back. Or in the episode where they both babysat. I think that their relationship should have stayed at that level WAY longer than it did. It went from a slight crush to instant deep love. ^_^'

I'm a fan of manga Mamoru and pgsm Mamoru. It's only the anime version that annoys me. I felt like Usagi and Mamoru's relationship was a lot more authentic and romantic in the manga and in pgsm, whereas in the anime it seemed forced because of how quickly things shifted when they got their memories back and learned of their alternate personalities.

In the Maikaiju arc, Mamoru was shown to develop feelings for Usagi. In the babysitting episode and arcade episode, they held hands and grew very close and then in episode 59, Mamoru stepped in front of Usagi and protected her, giving his life, before he got bac any of his memories. When Usagi woke up Mamoru called her his odango-atama. Tsukikage no knight also said he was created to protect Usagi, not Serenity. Mamoru clearly had a strong attachment to Usagi before any of that reincarnation stuff. Mamoru gave his life to protect Usagi when he didn't remember anything about the senshi, the moon kingdom, all he did was want to protect Usagi. There was no moon princess or Serenity memories there. Mamoru was protecting Usagi, not Serenity.

This is true Mamoru and Usagi did have an attraction to each other ever from the start in the anime. However they were both to childish to express their emotions and first so they reacted as children would, by teasing and toying with the person they care about. Usagi and Rei had a similar relationship as friends, constantly fighting and arguing even though they were the best of friends.
Joey and pacey were like that for the two season in Dawson, and then in the first episode of season 3, pacey said to Joey « it’s a new year, maybe we will become friends »
Foes to lovers, are the best love stories

Dear, what’s the matter if mamoru/endymion want to protect serenity ? Because usagi is serenity and serenity is usagi, they are not two different person. It’s the power of the silver crystal who makes them REBORN on modern times, queen serenity wanted them to be happy, so she used the silver crystal to made them reborn after the tragedy of the moon kingdom. The proof that serenity is usagi and they are the same entity, in the future, neo queen serenity, you think that serenity will kill
Usagi and finally serenity will replace usagi ?? ? No usagi is neo queen serenity actually, because serenity is usagi who was reborn on the modern time with the power of silver crystal

I just wanted to share some monologues that i found on the internet a while ago. These monologues are from the ANIME and well, lets say that this debunks the myth that Usagi and Mamoru are together just because of the past, which to me sounds a little bit silly, since in the manga Usagi says in the japanese version that everytime she'd bump into him she'd feel very happy and her heart would beat faster. Granted their relationship in the anime was a lot more childish but that doesn't mean that the feelings and attraction weren't there.

And these monologues and songs are from the ANIME and they come on a CD.

Usagi's Monologue (Translated by Alex Glover)

Let's see, let's see, let's see... I'm Tsukino Usagi, a loving girl in eighth grade. This is really strange! When I first met this guy, I thought he was a real big jerk, but I've realized that I've gradually come to like him. Girls are so weird! I wonder if it's all right for me to like a guy who's so stuck up!

But... Every time I see him, for some reason I feel invigorated. What on earth is this wondrous feeling? Every time I see him, each and every day seems more fresh than ever before in my life. *sigh*... I want to make the most beautiful love like this.

Mamoru-san... Tuxedo Kamen-sama... And Endymion-sama of my awakening ancient memories of the past... To be with you, I think I want to become any girl it takes. "I believe in you"... I wonder if that's the same as saying I love you. By the window at night, when I think of you far away, why... Why...?

So, as you can read Usagi was actually in love with Mamoru, but she didn't understand her feelings at all. The feelings were there, they were not caused by glimpses of a past life.

There's even a song she sings to Mamoru (dreaming by itself is no good) where she says that she's going to listen to her heart and fall in love.

Just like a wing, spread your arms wide Wow... wow...
So, it's all right, blow off your anxiety Wow... wow...
The sensors of my heart are catching palpitations
I wonder if it could be that I am in love?
The magic of my smile I am offering to you
I will give you the wonder that only I have

*I can feel it, the next world, I believe that
Someday my dreams will surely come true
Just fall in love, listen to your heart sound Wow... wow...
So, it's all right, take a deep breath now Wow... wow...
As long as you keep dreaming, you won't make it end

Every now and then, we may have a small fight
But the beat in my heart doesn't change
I am chasing after the same dream as you
And I am going to become more beautiful
All the things I have been longing for
I can do them, and thinking that's a feeling I treasure

**Just like a wing, spread your arms wide Wow... wow...
So, it's all right, blow off your anxiety Wow... wow...
Because your dreams will surely come true

*I can feel it, the next world, I believe that
Someday my dreams will surely come true
Just fall in love, listen to your heart sound Wow... wow...
So, it's all right, take a deep breath now Wow... wow...
As long as you keep dreaming, you won't make it end

**Just like a wing, spread your arms wide Wow... wow...
So, it's all right, blow off your anxiety Wow... wow...
Because your dreams will surely come true

And Mamoru, well, how can I say this without sounding mean... I thought it was obvious that he cared about Usagi with or without Memories... He didn't need memories to prove that he loved her in ep 59... He didn't know anything about their past, since it was implied that the moonlight knight was the embodiment of his memories. Why does Ann get all crazy when Mamoru holds Usagi's hands? Because it's obvious to Ali that Mamoru cares about Usagi and not Ann as she thought. Then the moonlight knight says that he wanted to protect Usagi not sailor moon. Usagi was the girl that was precious to him. It's obvious that if he cares about Usagi in the second season he also cared for her in the first one. I've watched this episode in italian, spanish (from spain and mexico), portuguese and japanese and in all those versions Mamoru says that the one that is important (the one he loves) is Usagi, the only version that got it all wrong was the american version, but what can we expect? the whole version was butchered, censored and completely different from the original one. And let's not forget something really important, Mamoru protects Usagi in ep 34, why would he risk his life if he didn't care about her? He obviously cares. He didn't know anything about her being a princess and what have you. He protected her because he loved her. True love is when you care more about the person you love than you care about your own life. That's true love. (or so I read somewhere)

That's the reason the silver crystal appeared, because what happened on the moon was happening again, Mamoru was injured protecting the person he cares about. And yes, it was Mamoru protecting Usagi (not Tuxedo Kamen protecting Sailor Moon) even Luna says that in the beginning of the next episode.

How can I be so sure about this? Well let's listen to his song (not literally...I should say let's read his song)

Crossing Time

Now the time when we first met
I cross time and dream of it...

Amidst the ruins, that is where I found you
My trembling shoulders became tense...
If the world once again crumbles to pieces
Only we, the chosen two will be left...
In the darkness of night, when a sudden sound
Frightens you, I will hold you close to me

The fallen skyscrapers send off on the wind blowing through the air
The sound of a whistled requiem...
The age far off someday when we are born again
Will be a tranquil utopia...

It is so very wondrous, this feeling that I have
Long ago, somewhere, I've had it before...
The threads of memory drawn in and tied together
The capital of the ancient forest
Shined upon by the full blue moon
The two of us fell in a painful love

The night I ran away with you was so cold and heart-breaking
The shooting stars above were countless

Even if someday we are reborn, I know that surely
I will search for you again

The fallen skyscrapers send off on the wind blowing through the air
The sound of a whistled requiem...

The age far off someday when we are born again...

This song should have played when he got his memories from their past life.

Notice how he says "It is so very wondrous, this feeling that I have, long ago, somewhere, I've had it before..." Meaning that he also has, in this lifetime, that wondrous feeling that Usagi mentions in her monologue.
And in his monologue he says he's in love too... His first love. But in order to understand the irony of the whole monologue, I have to add an extract of a dialogue between Luna and Usagi (this is from the second CD)

Luna: Eventually Usagi's love ends up in failure.
Usagi: It's always just a one-sided love anyways!

So by failure they mean that it's unrequited.

Mamoru's Monologue (Translated by Alex Glover)

The first love... So often, it ends in failure. I'm waiting for a sad ending. In this age, there are many people who have become unable to act with simple kindness. That's sad... I am broken-hearted, with deep wounds. But if there was a girl whose heart was broken in the same way, I would comfort her softly. And then, thinking of her feelings, I would cry. Such pure girls are the kind I love.

So basically Mamoru is saying that he's waiting for a sad ending to his first love because he thinks it's one-sided. Then he says he's heart broken but that he'd comfort a girl whose heart was broken in the same way... and he goes as far as to say that he'd cry thinking about her feelings... why? Because he's going through the same thing.
And the irony is that he's talking about Usagi, because Usagi is the one who suffers from unrequited love according to the second CD from the anime. So he'd comfort the girl that doesn't return his feelings.

First love= failure= one-sided love= sad ending= heart broken.
Girl whose heart is broken in the same way
First Love= failure= one-side love= sad ending= heart broken.

Besides I thought it was pretty obvious and a cliché that if a guy is teasing a girl ,in an anime or manga, is because he likes her... why else would he waste his time trying to get the girl’s attention?! Or doesn't Mamoru look a little crestfallen when Usagi yells at him that she doesn't like a guy who doesn't understand a girl's feelings?

Their whole relationship was a cliché, there is even a parody of Mamoru's behavior (teasing) toward Usagi in ep 65. There are two kids teasing Chibi-Usa, one even calls her odango... Chibi-Usa is not naive so she knows that the kids are hitting on her. She says "are you hitting on me? You are so immature, that's why everyone makes fun of you" or something along those lines. And then Minako says: "Don't let this bother you, boys tend to tease the girls they like instead of being nice to them"

I'm telling ya... Cliché. That's the reason they didn't develop their relationship. It was obvious that the arguing and silly bickering was a front.

In ep 61 Usagi says "Why Mamo-chan? We FINALLY acknowledged each other's love. SO, Why do you SUDDENLY want to break up with me?"

She says that because they must have talked. She doesn't say. "Why Mamo-chan? We finally remembered our love" that's just silly. She can't understand why he wants to break up with her since they acknowledged their love. But she is sure that he loves HER, anyway. Because Naoko didn't create two characters that fell in love because of their past, she created two characters whose love is eternal because they are twin souls (not soul mates), who will always be in love and who are together because they WANT TO.

I've been watching the musicals on youtube lately and if you pay attention to the songs you can easily tell that they are together because as they sing THEIR LOVE IS FOREVER. They say that their meeting is foreordained and that she will always choose Mamoru. That even is they die they will always meet again and again.
There's a scene where Mamoru bumps into Usagi and he starts teasing her and calling her odango atama, just like in the anime. But they are together, because when Usagi is kinda mad he calls her Usako. Usagi stars crying because she wants to go to the ocean and Mamoru promises that he'll take her... if she finishes her summer homework... he never stopped teasing her.

In another musical Mamoru is dying (he actually died) and he's telling Usagi that they'd meet again, that when they meet again he wants to be a normal Mamoru and be with a normal Usagi and have a normal happy relationship with her. He is sure that he will fall in love with her all over again. Because he has fallen in love with her three times, because their love is forever as they keep on singing.

There's even a scene in the anime where Usagi is going to say exactly what she felt when she first met Mamoru... but then she's interrupted, so typical in sailor moon. Anyway Ami is saying that she didn't want to go out with tigers eye (ep 144) because she didn't feel anything special when she met him. She said that if her partner is destined by god with the red string of fate then there will be a time for the two of them to meet and when that happens she'll know because you must feel something special when you meet someone of that sort. Then you see Usagi gasp when she remembers what she felt when she met Mamoru, because they both felt it... They are TWIN SOULS. Usagi says: A destined partner, huh?... When I first met Mamo-chan" and then Minako cuts her off.
So it’s really silly to say that they are together or that they felt in love when they remembered... yeah, cause Mamoru is just some hero that dies or gets injured protecting Usagi just because... But not because he actually cares about her...

When he finally remembers he remembers Tsukino Usagi, the odango atama. I thought it was obvious in the way they animated that part of the scene when he remembers. Pay close attention to his gaze when he says ... no, my dumpling head, Tsukino Usagi. His gaze softens and he smiles. Because Usagi is the girl he was attracted to, not sailor moon. That was the reason behind that line. And then Usagi says “you got them back, you got your memories back”. That’s all he had to say for Usagi to know he finally remembered. He didn’t say “My princess” or something like that, since he was not looking for a princess all he ever wanted was to know who he really was, he wanted to remember his childhood.

And the reason he finally remembered was because he proved that he loved Usagi, just like in the manga. Because in the manga he remembers about their past after proving that he loved her, by protecting her with his own life. So, why should that be different in the anime? Just because we didn’t see him kissing a handkerchief, doesn’t mean he didn’t care about Usagi. There are different ways to prove that you care about someone. Risking your life protecting someone you care about for example, that’s a bigger prove than to have him kiss some handkerchief. But we saw him trying to get Usagi’s attention all the time, staring and smiling at her, worrying about her when he thought she might get lost in the game center, grabbing her by the wrist and looking back with a smile on his face and we also saw him giving her explanations as to why Natsumi was in his apartment as if Usagi was his jealous girlfriend or something, because he cared about her. Then he tries to reach for Usagi in ep 59, he could have just left but he takes his ugly green jacket off and tries to get to her in the same way they tried to reach for each other when they were Endymion and Serenity. Does that say something?

I might keep on rambling on an on but the point is that they love who they are and they were in love during the first season. Usagi wasn’t going to openly admit it because she was stubborn and, well, Mamoru actually thought that Usagi hated him and wasn’t going to do anything about his feelings either. But that doesn’t mean that the feelings weren’t there. Since they are twin souls and their love is… forever.

One more thing... When Usagi asks Mamoru how much he loves her in ep 200 he really says: When I’m around you I feel invigorated.

That is the wondrous feeling that Usagi describes in her monologue, same wondrous feeling Mamoru mentions in his song.

I don’t actually think you can get that feeling when you get a few memories from a past life. Because let’s be honest, it must be kinda freaky to suddenly feel invigorated when you are close to a person when you never felt it before.

So they are together and will always be together because of what they feel when they are around each other, what they have always felt. Since they are two pieces of the same whole, destined to come together as one. That’s why they say it’s destiny that they are together. Since their meeting has been foreordained by god. Since god was the one that created them as one and split them, in order for them to find each other. That’s what they mean by a destined partner and the whole red string of fate thing. They are talking about your other half, the one person that completes you. And that’s why they are completely different, opposite poles attract.

Besides there was only going to be one season of sailor moon. It was the story of two twin souls finding each other and that was it, the whole crystal tokyo and the future was something that Naoko came up with when they told her that they wanted to continue with the story. So they are not together because of the future, since that wasn’t the idea that Naoko had in mind... all she wanted to create was the story of two people that will always love each other in each and every one of their reincarnations but not because of a memory. We can go ask Naoko! I read that she even reads fanfiction, she knows that her beloved couple is meant to be!
Thank you !
