Mamoru's necklace/pendant

I don't remember ever seeing this topic up, so I apologize if it has been discussed already, but...

Has anyone else noticed that Mamoru is always wearing that necklace?? Do you think it's like the music box pendant in the anime? I know the black string is pretty cheap looking, but maybe it's just the charm that's important. I remember in one of the Acts (the one where he woke up from the princess dream) there was a close up of the pendant on the dresser when he went to drink water...

Random reappearing accessory, or important piece to the puzzle?

maybe it serves as the locket equivalent? Maybe in a battle TK drops it accidentally and Moon picks it up and keeps it---or figures it out... like in the manga when Mam keeps the hankerchief and Usa keeps the locket...

Maybe its his pocket watch. But it doesn't seen like he would wear as a necklace.

I think it's Shibue's personal item. I think he was wearing it (or something similar) in the pic of him on his homepage, and he's worn it every episode he's been in.
