I'm sorry Naoko Takeuchi isn't that legendary of a mangaka to be doing illustration as an autograph.
lmao you all wanna downplay this woman's work and legacy so much to the point you are just saying bullsht as if she was a nobody or some obscure underground artist.
there is a reason why the keep making exhibitions with her art, selling her drawns in every single format and toei keeps milking the 90's anime franchise
If you are bored of her just giving us cute lil drawns once in a while just go and stan another mangaka or series still on going
there is so much unnecessary disrespect, hate and mostly flamebait

Lol.

She's so great that today she can only do redraws of her past works of which are either the character standing or a bust top.

But it's what she wants to draw, the exact same thing - such a legacy!

there is a reason why the keep making exhibitions with her art, selling her drawns in every single format
Yes, yes we know the manga is extremely popular, it sold 46 million and counting!!!
Every Sailor Moon fan has all versions of the manga and they read it so fervently that each year their copies get worn out and they have to buy a new copy.
Good on Naoko for thinking of her fans and every 2-3 years giving them a new edition!
I guess that's why the All Color edition has been out and complete.

toei keeps milking the 90's anime franchise
Because it sells?

So which is it? I thought the 90s anime couldn't compare to the manga yet it is selling?
The 90s anime is popular precisely because of a lot of stuff the manga and Naoko Takeuchi didn't create.

If you are bored of her just giving us cute lil drawns once in a while
Once in a while???

Lol, this is what her 4th? 5th? of the exact same thing in just these past months.
You see a girl boss move of her giving cutesy illustrations to popular people, I see a desperate attempt to try to stay relevant now that the Crystermos adaptation is over.
To each their own.

I, personally, don't care about Takeuchi nor am I interested in having any new manga nor anime expanding the lore or anything, I'm satisfied with what we have - good and bad.
However considering Takeuchi is supposedly a 'perfectionist' who makes hard working people's lives hell with her demands - sorry! 'Handles with an iron fist' her franchise built on her sweat and blood so as not to tarnish it's reputation, I think it's perfectly fair to judge her work with the same lens.

Also I wasn't gonna comment on her newest 'art' but considering I'm already here:

Criticising her artwork or questioning her skills is not hate, is no disrespect and it's not the same as downplaying her legacy. But let's not forget her manga was part of a multimedia endeavour and even though the anime incorporates her concepts and designs, if we're being realistic, we have to recognise that it has been proven time and time again that the anime could be successful on its own, while we can't be sure that the manga could.

The following is a list of the best-selling Japanese manga series to date in terms of the number of collected tankobon volumes sold. "Sailor Moon" by Naoko Takeuchi is listed as having approximate sales of 46 million, with average sales per copy of 2.55 million.

Similar numbers to manga such as Tokyo Ghoul (30 volumes, 47 million), Yu-Gi-Oh (38 volumes, 40 million), and higher selling than Black Butler (33 volumes-ongoing, 35 million), Spy Family (13 volumes-ongoing, 35 million), Death Note (12 volumes, 30 million), Fruits Basket (23 volumes, 30 million), One-Punch Man (26 volumes-ongoing, 30 million), Chainsaw Man (17 volumes-ongoing, 27 million), Neon Genesis Evangelion (14 volumes, 25 million), Cardcaptor Sakura (24 volumes, 22 million). Other manga that have sold more (arguably because they're also much more numerous, with dozens and dozens of volumes) are stuff like Nana (21 volumes, 50 million), Saint Seiya (28 volumes, sold 50 million), Inuyasha (56 volumes, sold 50 million), YuYu Hakusho (19 volumes, sold 78 million), Fullmetal Alchemist (27 volumes, sold 80 million). Sailor Moon's relatively short run of 18 volumes (I'm guessing it counts the extra chapter volumes as well) still made 46 million.

I think it's fine to criticize whatever aspect one thinks is worth criticizing, and sometimes that can lead to cool discussions, but some facts are just available in numbers. Insisting the Sailor Moon manga is a failure because of vibes in your head/because you prefer the 90s anime is just delusional, whatever your opinion of Naoko as an artist and businessperson is.

Well since the manga sold 45 million copise.I think we can say it was successful on its own.The anime was not an original production or idea created by staff.

I think it's weird to say that anime could been successful on it own.Really because if it wasn't for Naoko they would not been no anime or sailor moon. The anime staff could have made a successful anime, but it wouldn't been sailor moon.

The manga has sold 46 million copies thanks to the international fans who watched the classic anime first.

I think we can say it was successful on its own.The anime was not an original production or idea created by staff.
Back then most of the episodes of the 90's anime were in production before the conception and release of the manga chapters, so yes, a big part of the 90's anime is an original production. Get it over once and for all.

I think it's weird to say that anime could been successful on it own.
It was in Japan and overseas. Where were you in the 90's?

Really because if it wasn't for Naoko they would not been no anime or sailor moon.
Sailor Moon was born because Toei and Asahi wanted a new shoujo anime for 1992. Naoko's ideas were good, but if the anime kept going was thanks to the anime staff and the sponsors. And more importantly, the manga lasted 5 years thanks to them and their original ideas for the anime. Not Naoko's.

The anime staff could have made a successful anime, but it wouldn't been sailor moon.
Yes, if they've adapted the manga faithfully and Bandai hadn't been the main sponsor, Sailor Moon would've flopped.

And now it's when someone we all know is going to log in and talk about copyrights. :booze: Come on WRR.

I don't remember anyone here saying the manga was a failure, rather that it wasn't great and that Naoko's not a great mangaka. Being good and being successful are different things.

There were countries in which the anime was broadcast and was a hit, but I don't think we could name a country in which the manga was published and became a best seller without the anime being shown first.

You're spot on. No one's denying the basic concepts and designs that Naoko came up with were good, but ignoring that the investment TOEI and the other anime sponsors was crucial in making the manga going (and pretending the sales numbers are only a reflection of the quality of the manga itselt and weren't influenced by the anime and the huge marketing investments made on the franchise as a whole) is delusional.

Again what's you cretin of good. The fact that matter of is.The manga was good enough to be sucessful. This does not mean the anime was not more popular. It was just that it was successful.

Saying that the manga is only reason the manga is a best seller is because of the anime .This is not base on evidence.I don't think that fair to say.Naoko was interview in Japan and was asked about the manga. Its not like toei was promoting the manga.

If the only reason that the manga sold was because of the anime. It definitely would not sold 45 million copise.Got republished and people would not been collecting the whole set.

Ask any expert on comics and manga - or anyone whose repertoire is really impressive, who's really passionate and can have a critical view of the works they consume, any person like this - to name great manga titles, with great story or great art, hopefully both. They're likely to mention Berserk, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Rose of Versailles and maybe Cardcaptor Sakura, but I doubt many would mention Sailor Moon (unless we're talking about the titles they're most attached emotionally and/or about being iconic and important in a historical perspective, which isn't the same as praising the merits of the manga per se). Ask around out of the Sailor Moon fandom about great mangakas, and you'be probably be hard-pressed to find anyone mentioning Naoko Takeuchi. And as much as I love the 90s anime and think it's an iconic, import and enjoyable show, no, I wouldn't rate it as one of the best anime ever, let alone one of the best anime I've ever seen. I'm a fan, but I'm not delusional.

I never said it was the only reason, but it's certainly a big part of it.

Again, not the only reason, but I do believe it's fair to say the anime is probably the most important of reason. The question is: how many bought the manga because of the anime, and how many bought the manga despite or without considering the anime? You lot need to stop taking numbers as it's some sort of testament to a work's quality. We've been living in Capitalism for a long time, marketeers have been around for decades, it's about time we realised numbers are rarely, if ever, organic (not influenced by marketing).

I think it would be more effective to draw the right leg over the left leg and the item in her right hand and facing the left in a different photo.
It's a bit weird, her left leg seems to be in front of her right leg, but her left foot seems to be behind her right foot... But anatomy has never been Naoko's strongest suit has it?

Looks cute. Wondering how Yuichiro would look in her style.
I'm bored with her churning out the same rehashed drawing time and time again, but being mored and anatomically questionable aside, this more "laid back" style is Naoko at her best. I certainly like it much more than her "serious" recent illustrations like the one on Vogue or the atrocious Jennie single artwork.

Well I'm so sorry for being tired of "fans" whose concept of being a fan is to just complain about absolutely all and everything their favorite franchise produces so to not be obtuse to the correct wording of your post. But since this section of fans are such an oppressed group, I'll have to educate myself to be more sensitive.

There were countries in which the anime was broadcast and was a hit, but I don't think we could name a country in which the manga was published and became a best seller without the anime being shown first.
I don't see how that cancels the manga's success. It's still the manga Sailor Moon drawings that are being used by Chanel, not the 90s anime. That's like saying the Beatles sold as much as they did not because the music was good, but just because they were pretty men with lots of female fans.

When you call Naoko's work "basic concepts and designs that she came up with" you are denying her contribution, yes. That's being dismissive. Sailor Moon is not a Toei creation, no matter how much one prefers to twist reality. There's no such thing as a strict line between the manga and 90s anime, because they're one and the same: little media universes created by the same author, only the anime had different treatments in its conception because Naoko wasn't a filmmaker to direct the anime. There's not much difference between the mood in Crystal Season III/Eternal to the 90s anime, and even more of Naoko's work isn't that much different from other shoujo being released at the same time. You all would know this much better if you actually start reading more manga/watching more anime than just Sailor Moon.

I love good faith discussions and I love to discuss Sailor Moon with people who actually seem to like Sailor Moon. If a fan is someone being stubborn to the point of insisting to inferiorize all aspects you dislike about it even against facts and turning the whole fandom negative, then let me spell it out: it's D-E-L-U-S-I-O-N-A-L.
