I'm not quoting the person, but have you guys noticed you can say you don't like R, SuperS, the S movie, the musicals or the live-action show, and nobody gets mad at you?
But saying you dislike the manga (which the author herself apologized for being "amateurish") starts drama. :mischief:

Is there a thread about Naoko's art in general?

Goodness me!!!

The forum's back in the spotlight on Reddit. @Talentless Fool , our opinions about Naoko as an artist have made their way onto those threads.
Whoever wrote 'A lot of her artwork nowadays feels... uninspired,' hasn't clearly got taste and should’ve read the masterpiece that PQ Angels is to understand just how versatile Naoko really is as an artist.

I'll drop the link for you to have a read:

Apparently, according to some, we’re just a bunch of art amateurs, and Naoko is the embodiment of pseudo-expressionist visual beauty on par with El Greco. By the way, I get a mention too, albeit indirectly. shiny_glitter_demon, sending a shout-out to you from here, JUST LIKE ALWAYS!!!!!!

LadyPen, nobody in that reddit thread is comparing Naoko to El Greco or other old master painter…

I don’t post very often, but as a longtime fan, I enjoy reading people’s thoughts and opinions on Sailor Moon-related topics.

At the end of the day, people are entitled to their opinions. I can see and understand the critiques against Naoko’s skills, especially when comparing against other mangaka. However, must so many threads on our forum end up as threads where folks are calling out and making fun of people who do appreciate and enjoy her work?

Again, it’s perfectly fine to hold a negative opinion of Naoko and Sailor Moon. But it’s also perfectly fine to hold a positive opinion too.

Well, I’ll have to give my opinion based on Naoko’s new illustrations in the right thread, and try not to sound disrespectful – even though I love being that, to be honest. Lady Pen being respectful will never be ©Lady Pen.

Anyroad....

As I’ve already said, it’s the same floating head she’s been repeating in her latest attempts and artistic delusions. This time, Naoko presents two drawings that don’t show any real challenge, which is ironic since she’s making the same mistakes she did 30 years ago. Especially in the second drawing.

Apparently, the law of the broken neck is hard to scrap.

But the funniest thing is:

The drawings suffer from what’s called one-way freefall due to the lack of something essential in art: composition. If the drawings had been more dynamic and less static (and less of a ‘I’m just going to draw these floating heads I’ve been sketching for almost a quarter of a century because I’ve got them memorised ’), or if she’d made a collage with fake flowers to contrast things, like she’s done so many times before it might’ve been less obvious.

I like that shade of green of the second picture by the way!

I think the second art looks like her Black Moon era style (and it’s the same period as the panel you posted). I’m sure it’s very close to another panel of the manga or a color art but I can’t put my finger on it.

Well, I like the way she drew Jupiter's hair, but that's about it. I'm happy that she paid tribute to Shinohara but the drawings themselves are a bit bland (and I still hate the way she draws mouths so close to their nose, as she did on the second one).

Actual talent has nothing to do with integrity. It's not like, "oh, the new manga isn't selling well, we are stopping because no one cares about it". And I get that. No, it's like "we sell quite well, but we don't care enough to have a series finished. Because fans are idiots that are going to buy the new, equally unfinished, edition of X and the merch anyway".
CLAMP are very pragmatic that is why they value the English market more than even their domestic market and their pragmaticism also goes to their own works, they drop the works that don't sell or controversial, no wonder it is only Card Captor Sakura which has equal quality in Japan and US in manga version.

Some people hate Sailor Moon because of Naoko's artstyle, I gave the link of the archived Sailor Moon hate site that hates it due to Naoko and I won't repeat it.

I’ve got a few things to say on this.

Some of the comments on Reddit left me baffled, especially the ones calling this art 'peak.'
Now, it’s hardly news that Naoko isn’t the world’s best manga artist, though she’s done far better illustrations than this, no doubt about it. It’s clear she’s drawn each girl separately, and Meiji’s composed the graphic design. So it works quite well, but not thanks to Naoko — it’s down to the graphic designer Meiji hired. Since each character’s been drawn individually (you can really tell), none of them have much personality. Rei’s the only one who stands out, and that’s just because of her left leg's position (which makes her foot look terrible, by the way), tilting her figure to give off that classic Ojou-sama vibe Rei’s known for in the manga/Crystal.
The rest of the girls feel interchangeable.

Like others, I highly doubt when exactly this was drawn, but the airbrushed colouring in Photoshop is very early 2000s, around 2001-2006 and she touched up the faces and some ornaments.

I’m surprised no one’s noticed the skirts. Has no one realised that Naoko’s been drawing them longer recently? Sailor Moon’s always stood out from other magical girl series, especially Precure, for its sex appeal and sensuality. But it seems Naoko doesn’t care for that when she’s trying to present Sailor Moon as a high-end luxury brand for women, which means the main girls must look as demure as possible for everyone.

I'm not a fan of the skirts.
I saw this first on reddit and 'm also confused by the people claiming that this is "peak". Mind you, these people would probably say this about anything. It's another word that lost it's meaning.

But yeah, this isn't one of her best efforts. Moon and Chibi Moon are fine, Uranus is okay... but the others are so...I don't know. Everything from the skirts to hair feels off. I don't hate it, but nothing stands out to me EXCEPT how ugly the skirts are this time.
On the plus side...Uranus' boots and Jupiter's hair are nice enough.
Naoko has definitely done better. This is thankfully not her peak.

The much more simplistic style buttons look like they have more care.

I think even the die-hard Naoko fans would agree on this.

Michiru-sama is not given the respect she deserves... again.

The faces. Oh mah Gawd, the faces!
It's looking more and more closer to Sakou level!

The skirts are truly butt-ugly, they look like crunched paper... and those Christmas gift wrap back bows...

Sigh...

However, my overall opinion is that it's pretty good compared to what Takeuchi has given us.
I mean, I would think this is a Valentine collab because everyone is making hearts (and perhaps it was originally so) but at least it's not Usagi in the void with the peering into the emptiness of your soul :P
