I'm probably the only one who DOESN'T want too much elaboration on the Silver Millennium and Crystal Tokyo in this anime or any other version. I mean, I'm okay with a bit more detail, but I don't want everything explained in full, because that would kill the whole mystique about it.
Trust me, you're not. I don't want all this prequel/backstory stuff that most of the people on here seem to be after either. Like you said, it would kill the mystique. The Silver Millennium is a perfect example of "less is more" in storytelling.
So true. For an example of how excessive elaboration ruined the series, look at the Star Wars prequels and all that Clone War crap. We didn't need or want to know that Darth Vader was a whining pansy-ass. All we knew about him before Lucas wrecked it all was that he was Luke's dad, turned to the Dark Side, and somehow got burned alive and required his suit to live. The rest was up to us to interpret (for better or worse).
I don't care for all the Star Wars backstory stuff myself, that didn't need to happen, but I feel completely differently about Sailor Moon. There are so many interesting things in Sailor Moon which had the potential to develop fantastic drama, all of which then get dropped and barely explored, and the best thing the new series could do is to actually pick up on them and use them to their full potential. The fact that Anakin's past was badly handled doesn't mean that the new series is going to drone on poorly about the character's emo backstories for hours, Lucas had no business trying to write a tragic love story anyway. But with Sailor Moon the backstory sections are some of the most interesting parts, even minor characters who only appear in one episode get interesting backstories and I find that my favorite episodes in the anime are very focused on how events in characters' pasts lead up to who they are and what's happening now.

I care nothing for 'mystique', if you're going to introduce something it better actually contribute to the drama in a significant way instead of leaving me hanging and then popping out of existance with no explanation. Ami has her whole "You Asian, why you not doctor yet?" thing going on, and yet we never meet her mother; I shouldn't even need to mention everything about Makoto and how terrible the series is in general at exploring her life. The celestrial kingdoms are just another example of this, the stuff that happened keeps getting brought up all the time, but the potential it has to get explored more so that it impacts on the character's present state of mind just isn't taken advantage of. That's what seperates this from something like the Star Wars prequals and extended universe, the celestrial kingdoms and their stories can be brought up within the context of the main story itself and this can impact the course of events as the characters become aware of what happened and the potential consequences of this. Surely that is far more interesting then having endless arcs of energy stealing monsters dominate the series? Not to mention all the interesting characters who only pop up in a couple of episodes and then serve no further purpose. I'm not interested in 'interpreting' important events outside of the narrative, instead of having to make stuff up I want what is there to be interesting enough that contemplating it and how it contributes to the whole is satisfying in its own right.

Couldn't disagree with you more. The original design is beautiful and elegant. The PGSM prop looks like some prop from a SciFi Network series. The 10th anniversary toy is my absolute favorite role play toy out of the entire series and translates perfectly to real life...unlike that ugly clear plastic mess sold with the advent of the live action series. Oh, and guess which one sold better and continues to have the most demand on the secondary market?
Let's not get into a magical girl item design argument, now.

I agree with you, though. The original golden moon stick looks the best, in my opinion. At least we can all agree that Naoko is great when designing those items. She did the ones for PGSM too, right?

Also, you know what the 10th anniversary toy should have had? The Silver Crystal being removable. It also could have used what the cosmic heart compact did and wrap that mirror-like film around the inside to hide the lightbulb. :P

I might actually buy one of those if they release any high-quality RP toys (to hide in shame P-: )

Since this is a remake, I really hope they'll put a fresh spin to it so it doesn't become boring or formulaic. I agree it would be really awesome if they could incorporate some of the elements from Sailor Stars such as the Sailor Wars, Galaxy Cauldron, and even the Outer Soldiers' guarding the Moon Kingdom!

On the other hand, I really do hope most of the original VAs come back. I sincerely hope they won't get Momoiro Clover Z to voice them, please just let them sing the song! :supercry:

OMG I love your sig! :D has a lot of my favorites! Amami Yuki, Tamayama Tetsuji! I loved them in boss.

The characters did get fleshed out in the anime, just not always in areas that mattered most. Makoto's cooking just so she could feel more feminine and better about herself was something I really thought was nice. Haruka being emotionally tormented by the whole sacrificing thing throughout all of S and getting mad at Usagi because she had the same ideal beliefs that both Haruka and Michiru had to repress was also a really nice example of good character interaction. They do need more backstory, though. Makoto's parents, Rei's men issues stemming from her cold father, Ami being a child of divorced parents, Minako being forced to "mature" in an unhealthy way during her Sailor V days, etc. NEEDS to be seen, I agree.

The enemies got it good in the anime, on the other hand.

Instead of always being chaotic evil, Nephrite finds himself in love with an innocent bystander to his own surprise, and ends up redeeming himself, and dies as a human.

The Ayakashi sisters act like actual sisters, and Koan suffers an all-to-common fate of being used and crushed by someone she loved. Again, she and the rest remember what it means to be human.

The same goes for the Amazon Trio, who end up going through the original Little Mermaid story (which fits the fairy tale motifs of the season.)

Nehelenia wasn't another mindless baddy who only gets a small shout out to the sleeping beauty story, she gets a deconstruction of the evil queen obsessed with her beauty as her backstory, and Usagi and many other viewers took pity on her for falling down such a horrible path due to that evil mirror manipulating her weak heart and her crushing loneliness and turning her into a bitter witch.

Prof. Tomoe wasn't the normal mad scientist, he was actually a pretty nice guy to his underlings. Giving Mimette a pep-talk when she was down, giving days off, being generally understanding. His true self loved Hotaru like a real father would. He wanted to save her, and it led to disaster. Even though she was a possessed monster, he (and sailor moon) protected her and believed that Hotaru's soul was still inside her body somewhere, and that was what gave her the strength and determination to awaken as Saturn. It was really touching to see those flashbacks before the accident.

Beryl is the only exception to this. And possibly Galaxia.

I'd lie some backstory on the inners parents, and Beryl needs to do more than sit on her throne all season and giving orders. I felt she was the villain, her and Galaxia send there minion out they fail get killed and next one shows up. That's something I don't want to see repeated. The black moon clan and dead moon circus villains at least they divided the seasons up so we got half of each group.

pgsm at least kept them all active throughout the season, they should do that, or have them all together and rotate who goes on missions like R and Super S.

It's not continuing from Sailor Stars, it's a re-make.

That information can be easily accessed in this thread, as well as on fan-sites like Sailor Moon Obsession and Moonkitty. =) And Miss Dream, of course.

WOW! A whole new anime! This will for sure bring people back to these forums (like me). :megaoh:
No.

Not for many at least. I only come here once in a while to see what's going on, and I don't usually post because of all the bickering and insults being thrown over stupid things. Like the dead-serious flamewar started over the celibacy of the senshi. I love Sailor Moon, but I don't care to participate in fights over details in a fictional TV show meant for young girls. This is probably why a lot of people have left, among other things.

I know this is a belated reply. But every single time I visit this forum I see drama that makes me wonder why I even come here at all.

^It's always the same people too.

But you're going to get heated debates and the like in any forum you go to, it's really not that big of a deal.

The real reason many people won't come back is because the new SM anime is still just a remake of an old series. People aren't going to be as excited about it as a totally new and flashy anime series.

I was really trying not to get involved in it, but I suck at staying away from storms like that. Unless it's a full-blown [BLEEP] storm. Ah well.

Surprisingly though, this forum is one of the least drama-prone ones I've ever seen. The atmosphere is usually very friendly and it lacks the harshness of other places while still discouraging annoying crap posts at the same time.

THIS! People complaining about the harshness of this place really need to take a chill pill, this place is nowhere near the level of some forums on livejournal.

As many of you I also have much hope about new anime, but speaking of story, I think best way would be to go way, it went early. I mean, it is no need to make whole season revealing some one of those shaded stories (past of Silver Millenium for example). I think best way is to do next things: 1) Represent new enemy (of course). Also it is need to represent new senshi OR new allies, while it is not very critical. 2) enemy is new and not connected to existed shaded stories 3) during season is revealed some details about new shaded story where is new enemy and allies belong 4) during season is revealed some details about some OLD shaded stories. 5) during season was told some stories about senshi and allies
Isn't this is what we all liked in SM?

Since the new anime is supposed to be a re-telling of the manga, I imagine it will just be a closer rendition to the manga than anything else. I don't expect to see many new stories. If there are new stories, I expect it to go the route of PGSM (like how Kuroki Mio was a new character with a new arc, and Dark Mercury was a new thing, but they both still fit into the context of the Dark Kingdom).

But I don't expect completely new storylines with completely new villains. Not at all. But we'll see.

Well, I mean...

1) Look around you. There are lots of people suddenly logging back into their old accounts to post about the new anime. Whether or not they'll stick around is one thing, but the announcement of the new anime is DEFINITELY drawing old users back here. Fact.

2) That may be a reason why you don't like it here very much, but from what I understood, the recent mass exodus of members had more to do with board policies and the ridiculous amount of trolling from all kinds of members as opposed to discussions that got out of hand and became flame wars. The latter is something you see in every fandom, on many, many forums. It is not unique to this place.

In fact, I would argue that the reason why so many people left is because the board finally decided to DO something about the flaming/trolling, and people didn't like that their freedom to be an asshole was taken away or something like that.

Basically, what everyone else is saying re: the "harshness" of this place is correct. This forum really isn't that bad at all compared to some other places (and fandoms) you see. It's not like every single thread contains a flame war. Usually, it's just the more controversial topics (dub vs. sub) and it has less to do with the opinions themselves than with the way those opinions are expressed by others.

Are we gonna see that Naru's-mum's-jewelry-store story AGAIN?!? If they decide to use the exact same enemies from the manga/original anime, fans might lose interest fast. Nobody wants to see the EXACT same thing over and over again.

I personally hope they just stay true to the manga as far as actual important plot-points, characters' personalities and designs go... But they really should give up on the MOTD format.

I don't know how true this is, I haven't seen a source, but my friend who's usually pretty reliable about this stuff said that Toei is producing this remake, but not necessarily animating it themselves. He speculated that if that's the case, then maybe BONES is animating it. He said that Studio BONES mentioned a while back that they're working on a "familiar property", and also pointed out that some key people who worked on the original "Sailor Moon" are now at BONES. I think he mentioned two particular people, but I don't remember their names. Again, this is just pure "what-if" speculation.
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/20 ... liar-title

Their "familiar title" has yet to be announced but it has almost everyone thinking that it might be a sequel for Darker Than Black or a remake of Soul Eater or Ouran High School Host Club so now this has me wondering if he's right about this and the new Sailor Moon anime is being co-produced by BONES plus who are the "key people" who worked on the original series?
