But she's one of my favorite characters because she's kind of like me, meaning an introvert who likes her peace and quiet. She's a Guardian for less than 24 hours and already sick of fighting monsters. She'll keep doing it though because she can't have her peace and quiet with a bunch of demons running around.

Rei in Crystal is a bland character, her motivations and characteristics are either informed abilities or come out of nowhere. Examples: Rei’s hatred of men, her dream of succeeding her grandfather in the temple just coveniently come and go for the sake of the plot. Crystal is basically saying you should already know this you read the manga before didn’t you?

We enjoy it because we know and live this characters but for newcomers is like, what’s happening here?

in any case the best representation of Rei from the manga is PGSM, she evolves from an outsider, distant not trusting others and having issues to create real connections to woman who treasures her friends, has a clear goal in her mind by the end of the show, faced her father and was able to become a better person thanks to her experiences as a senshi and her bond with Usagi and the others.

For me that’s how I picture Rei and why she’s a great character.

To me, she's not at all bland. She's shy and a loner, but she clearly *wants* to be around others, she's just so used to rejection she's convinced herself she's okay with it. Like the birthday episode. She has no idea why her friends have come to visit her when she's gone off to train on her birthday. She really is that used to being alone.

PGSM Rei was the most manga accurate version from an adaptation.

PGSM Rei embodied the character amazingly well. She still had the sass, was still harsh towards Usagi (like 90s Rei) but still cared deeply for her.
When Rei was hurt, Keiko showed us, her rage, her passion. Ugh, I just love PGSM Rei. Sakura Fubuki still stays stuck in my head.
There's a reason why the actress has now become an A-list actress. :)

While Crystal Rei is not without character eventually, she is completely mis-presented during the first season, and it is crucial, because everybody else got their moments in character and show their manga personality here and there. While she showed some of her manga character in act 3, they really watered her down after. Her sas is all gone - manga Rei express it in front of an enemy, she also makes not as mean but still 'disapproving remarks towards Usagi. She didn't do that in Crystal or it was really short version and almost non-existent in act 11 and even then it playful and not in the right tone. . In act 3 Crystal is saying "I do not want to fight these monsters, it is tiring" or something like this without the snobbish pose and hair flip, which makes her as if she is complaining vaguely, while in the manga she says I am not fighting, until you give me answers and tell me what is this all about, which adds to her character a lot, if you think about it - she doesn't complain, she demands informaton and shows her attitude to take stuff seriously, while showing leadership qualities and demands agency. All these small things adds to her overall character. In act 15 she says "What is wrong with me, I started acting like Usagi", but without her remarks here and there we never knew beforehand she has anything against being like her. . Even without Casablanca Memories, which was written later, the manga still establish Rei in Dark Kingdom Arc as a sassy, slightly snobby and confident, while in Crystal they focused on her loneliness in act 3, which is immediately forgotten and make her as shy as Ami. Then in Season 3 she gets some of these qualities back, but she seems like a bit like a different character in these moments. .Crystal didn't bother to mention she has a grandpa till season 3 Phobos and Deimos were completely forgotten after chapter 10 as well. Overall the original director and writer seem like they never read beyond chapter 26, so they approached the adaptation without thinking something they cut from these chapters might come into play later. And to be honest, it is not really their fault. It is the production fault, because they choose to do it this way. If Crystal started as planned full adaptation of the manga from the start, while still in seasons, the writers would have known they should approach accordingly - from their perspective this was 26 episodes project, without anything planned beyond that.

Seeing that TOEI based Rei's cousin in the 90s from her manga grandpa which appeared in Sailor Stars(which is similar to what the original eng. dub did to Haruka and Michiru) it is not surprising.
