- Removal of side characters or changing small plot bits like Motoki actually knowing and remembering identities of girls, etc
- Copy paste 90s anime pandering from S3 onwards in transformation and attack footage
- Akira Takahashi ( tho i still prefer his body proportions over current Tadano even with his signature of frog mouth)
- Openings in cosmos, just waste of time, those extra 1.5 mins in each movie could been used to remove less stuff from manga or add something original.

A lot of those filler episodes, especially in Classic are absolutely needed because they convey a sense of the world around in which Usagi inhabits. It’s little things like going shopping for clocks in Harajuku with Ami, the cruise ship developing Rei and Ami’s friendship, Dreamland episode, Mamoru and Rei’s date , Urawa and Ami. Sure, nothing vital storyline-wise happens and you could call them filler but you miss out on so much character development and a lot of the time the filler is what makes the payoff so great in the finale.

I do agree that there is a lot more throwaway filler in the later seasons but I’d take that over most of Crystal’s emotional moments because they just don’t feel earned narratively.

Even though the manga has its flaws, I think that most of the deviations Crystal took were detrimental and when they didn't follow the manga it was worse except for a few occasions (like the fight with Zoisite on top of the building).
This isn't to say that I think they shouldn't have deviated some...it's saying that they made bad deviations.

They omitted characters that made the world feel more alive.
The 90s focused too much on randos, but Crystal barely gives anytime to even the main cast if they're not Usagi/Chibi Usa or Mamoru.

The Senshi/Shitennou was actually one of the cringiest things I've ever experienced in Sailor Moon if not the worst. I am against it anyway, but it was handled so poorly here. Is there anyone who thought this was done well?
I would have preferred to see them die at the hands of the Senshi like in the manga. That made the girls seem powerful. Which they mostly did in season 1.
I had no emotional attachment to them. That plot would have required extra episodes and someone who understands what makes the pairings popular in the musicals.

The overuse of stock footage.
I love stock footage, but Crystal spammed it during season 3 and it was not the high quality stuff we had during the 90s.
One of my friends laughed when we were watching Crystal because I kept fast forwarding through the constant transformation scenes and reminded me how I always watched them in the old anime.
This wasn't some stylistic choice it was purely to burn time and save budget and the pacing suffered for it.
That said, having at least one big group henshin scene per season is almost mandatory for me...having them every other episode is bad.
And don't get me started on the girls doing the Care Bear Stare multiple times at Wiseman and Pharaoh 90.

Little things that are a big deal upon a rewatch also bother me.
I think the VAs are good, but they never feel connected. Like when the girls are having a conversation there are times it really feels like they are in different rooms.
Meanwhile, the old anime felt so natural when their was an argument. You could practically feel Rei looming over Usagi and it all seemed very much like a group of girls in one room interacting.
This isn't a knock against the voices, it's more of how voice acting in general is done these days.

To succeed as a manga adaptation, Crystal needed a competent writer to adapt it first with the blessings and input of Naoko but minimal interference from her or Toei.

I enjoy Crystal for what it is, but as a fan I feel insulted and if I hadn't already been a fan I can't imagine Crystal ever getting me into Sailor Moon...much less turning me into an anime fan like the 90s version did.

Crystal may have adapted the manga but it did not honor the manga.

We see Ami using an IPad at several times in S1 and Eternal, though. And Usagi using a laptop? But then in Cosmos they’re still using letters to communicate. It’s just bad writing.
They decided Cosmos had to be consistent with the inconsistency of the entire reboot.

I'd like to add: Crystermos is sooooooooooo aseptic. ASEPTIC. At least the manga had energy, but the reboot was... dead.

In the first movie when Usagi and Mamoru are saying goodbye at the airport they say that they'll exchange e-mails AND letters, Usagi tells her friends she expects e-mails from him, the airport scene when they talk about e-mails is shown again in a flashback, I think she also mentions e-mails when she talks to Asanuma. So e-mails are on the table but they also use physical letters and that fits the story because physical letters are still more romantic, I don't get what's so bad about it.

I don't like how fast paced it is, the lack of comedy like the 90s anime had, the lack of personality the characters had like the 90s anime had, the lack of moments with the main characters doing things together in their personal lives when they're not busy saving the world like the 90s anime had, and that pretty much all the villains die, one thing I like about Sailor Moon is the occasional moments when a villain is healed and becomes good like in the 90s anime for the Black Moon arc with the Spectre Sisters but that doesn't mean I hate Sailor Moon Crystal, there are things I don't like about the 90s anime either. I'm not someone who gets blinded by nostalgic bias for the 90s anime or for Crystal because that's the version you grew up on or whatever reason, that's not a valid argument for choosing which version is the best. I don't believe there is a right answer for which version is the best, despite their strengths and flaws the 90s anime and Crystal are even, I'm split between the two that I can't choose one over the other it makes me wish that we had a definitive version of a Sailor Moon anime with the best of everything the franchise has in one, and a video game too while we're at it. I hope we get another Sailor Moon reboot with a Sailor V anime that ties in with the reboot and a video game in the future, it's such a shame this franchise is not being handled the way it should be.

I'm sorry for my bad English but I need to get this out of my chest...
I'm gonna add one more thing I don't like about Crystal is the way the fighting scenes were handled, especially how they make the Inner super weak.
Both the manga and 90s anime did make the 4 Guardian Soldiers useless for the sake of making Outer or Starlights look stronger, but at least they have their moments to shine (the iconic sacrifice when facing DD Girls/the way they clean out Kisenian flower monsters/how they utilize their teamwork to destroy Cyprine & Ptilol in 90s, and the girls killing the Shitennou plus Venus killing Beryl with the Holy Blade in the manga), and Crystal just nerfs them a lot more compared to their counterpart in the manga, reducing their significant moments of how powerful they are initially.

The Inners not being able to kill Shitennou is already mentioned above so I'm gonna talk about them in Act 27 where they have to use 4 attacks just to weaken 1 Daimon for Sailor Moon to finish it (like what could be worse than that...) and Jupiter Coconut Cyclone in Act 31 when they fought against Tellu... I really wonder how a big lightning energy ball that's almost as big as Makoto herself just becomes a small tiny soccer ball (or even smaller) that's easily blocked when it actually pushed Tellu back in the manga.

I don't like the way they bring back 90s' stock footage in Eternal/Cosmos too (I could tolerate Crystal S3's one though) cuz I absolutely loved real-time fighting scene in Dark Kingdom arc (especially the one in episode 6 when Jupiter, Mars and Mercury used their elements so skillfully when fighting Zoisite) and to me, they don't look as cool as the 90s ones...
And finally them not adapting extras like Casablanca Memories and 3 Exam Battle chapters too, when I (and I think others do too) absolutely love to see the girls' daily normal life and how they interact and being silly around each other when they're not fighting enemies, it would always be heart-warming to see, I actually appreciate 90s for having more of screentime like that.

I might unfollow this and just pay attention to the votes, as Crystal is my favorite anime. If you dislike Crystal, I'll respect your opinion, but I might not want to hear rants about it.

The first two, I notice anime fans these days seem to prefer it to be the other way around. But I prefer it the way it is in Crystal, as for the first, original Sailor Moon imprinted on me what I expect of anime (and gave me that interest in general), and for the second, I was kinda brainwashed to dislike it when I was young and never really made the transition to getting into it.

If this starts to become too heated, then delete this.
I like crystal. It was flawed and I wish it had been more popular but I like it.

I think, in time, history will be kinder to it

Crystal is being told you're getting gourmet.
Your favorite meal made even better and with all natural ingredients, from the source.

You wait an exorbitant amount of time, because you know it will be worth it.
The picture on the menu has your mouth watering.

After the long wait your anticipation is through the roof.

Then, instead of giving you gourmet, they give you cold McDonald's.

When you order this for your birthday:
Spoiler: show

They give you this instead:

I've been waiting half my life for this reboot. I've earned my right to be salty about how it was treated.

Me when people say I am overreacting in being disappointed with the Crystal project.

I think Sailor Moon Crystal should be like the Nelke adaptations wherein they bring back concepts discarded by Madam Naoko just like in S1.

The S1 is what the first season of the 90s anime could have been the other seasons are close adaptations of the manga.

crystal really needed a team who loved sailor moon, and naoko needed to have less of a chokehold on how sailor moon content is presented ^_^'

you can get very creative with reimaginings! the 2000s bendis' ultimate spider-man uses the same basic facts about peter parker's origin story as the 60s lee/ditko spider-man, but the way they're presented is totally different. you could get creative with the basic facts of sailor moon in the same way

i don't want sailor moon to wind up going down in history as an influential but mostly forgotten franchise---the only way to prevent this, imo, is to let it evolve ^_^ crystal could not do this, or was not allowed to

Crystal already got that with Kon and her team on the 3rd season.
And people like to think it's an insult to the manga.

Kon is a major Sailor Moon and Toei anime fan as she grew up with them.
The difference is that she's a fan of the 90s anime and not of the manga - as she revealed in the Eternal interview that it was the first time she was reading the manga.
Any director who loves Sailor Moon is gonna love the 90s anime and not the manga.

Kon - who was a major Sailor Moon fan - was completely drained by the end of the 2 movies.
Takahashi - who wanted to pay even more respect to the 90s anime and develop the Animamates - in the end wanted to jump ship and didn't add anything new he wanted.

For people who love the manga story, the Crystal series (minus Dark Kingdom arc) respects it to a maximum.
If it is still not good, the problem is not gonna be solved with some Madhouse/Trigger level animation.

Crystal is the joke and we're the baboons watching it
