Crystal already got that with Kon and her team on the 3rd season.
And people like to think it's an insult to the manga.

Kon is a major Sailor Moon and Toei anime fan as she grew up with them.
The difference is that she's a fan of the 90s anime and not of the manga - as she revealed in the Eternal interview that it was the first time she was reading the manga.
Any director who loves Sailor Moon is gonna love the 90s anime and not the manga.

Kon - who was a major Sailor Moon fan - was completely drained by the end of the 2 movies.
Takahashi - who wanted to pay even more respect to the 90s anime and develop the Animamates - in the end wanted to jump ship and didn't add anything new he wanted.

For people who love the manga story, the Crystal series (minus Dark Kingdom arc) respects it to a maximum.
If it is still not good, the problem is not gonna be solved with some Madhouse/Trigger level animation.

Crystal is the joke and we're the baboons watching it
I think the plot of Stars can be changed and elaborated by adding materials from the blue ray notes and materials collection, which is exactly what the Nelke play did.

While at first I put all of the above, I switched it to other because the main issue for me is how it is always centered on Usagi. I realize that the 90's animation (as well as the original manga) also focused on her and had it's own issues, but Crystal is the worst offender.

In the manga, Rei demanded more information from Luna before agreeing to help with the grand plan of things. It's a small moment, but it gives some flair and I'm disappointed Crystal cut it. The changes with Beryl's defeat were also an issue to me.

Crystal is far from the only one to treat the supporting characters as background, but the 90's anime filler kind of remedied that in some ways.

I still appreciate Crystal for being a concise way to summarize the main plot points though, and I do appreciate the visual quality of the later arcs.

The first season is not a 1:1 manga adaptation but they also adapted the discarded ideas in the first season which they did not do in other seasons.

Exactly.

Even if Crystal had had good animation it would've been rubbish. Also, there'd been manga fans who would hate it like they do with the actual Crystal.
The thing is, manga fans don't like the manga. What they like is coloured illustrations and that story they imagine every time they ' read ' the manga boosted by the nostalgia of the extra info the original anime provided. But they don't realise that.

I think the solution would have to adapt the plotlines from the Manga Shorts, Materials Collection, and the Storylines scrapped in the Blue Ray Notes - but that did happen on S1, but the execution is a mess and they did not even recall the SenShi ships on future arcs.

It's evident the manga and by extension Crystal can't stand on it's own without the 90s anime

Like people LOVE how much more BETTER the Outers are portrayed in the manga/Crystermos ONLY because of their development, characterization and badassery shown in the 90s anime.
So it's much more easier for the manga to sell the idea - rather the illusion - that the Outers are more cooperative and 'reasonable' than in the 90s anime when if you take the manga at face value, the Outers turn out to be the biggest jerks and flip-floppers of all time.

This is why I am against a 1:1 manga adaptation when the manga is rushed and Crystal just shows why it can't work in that case.

I do understand this, and I think this is an issue for me as well, if only because it was marketed for so long as a faithful manga remake. Had they stuck to being 1:1 or did different ideas for the whole thing, I probably would not be as conflicted. Not saying I prefer a 1:1 manga adaptation (while I love the source content, the manga isn't my favorite either), but it's clear they were kind of unsure of what they were doing while making it and swapped things around midway. This makes the first two story arcs awkward to watch for me. I fully believe it'd be better if they used the manga as a core reference but also used some of the filler stuff from the 90's animation or even the live action to inspire more supporting cast development, it would've been more of my taste. Unfortunately, even when they did try to spin off from the manga, they tried to keep manga pacing.

Why did Takahashi want to jump ship / didn’t add new things? What was the actual problem?

Considering he was given the permission and extra budget to remake the 2 Openings (something he thought Toei wouldn't allow him to) and he was also given the extra budget for nearly every 5 mins pumping out a stock animation (for good or worst) in the 2nd movie... the problem wasn't Toei.

I would suppose it would cost more to animate the 2 Openings + all of the stocks rather than giving new scenes to the Animamates which would involve them talking and using static images for events.
Not to mention Toei paying extra for the voices of Galaxia, Kakyuu and Cosmos ::toast:
For once Toei wasn't being Trollei.

Re-enactment scene of when Takahashi has to ask permission from you-know-who:

So Tomoya wanted to leave bc it was too frustrating to colaborate with Naoko?
He was probably moreso frustrated that he was being forced to adapt to the letter a story riddled with nonsensical and repetitive events, plotholes, padding and poorly written characters.

His role as the director was to deliver a cohesive story that the viewers would be able to understand and be entertained by hence his desire to develop the Animamates as characters (and probably some other stuff) but again considering Toei gave him extra budget, there's no reason for them to refuse his desire to develop the plot especially after he was vocal about it.

This is the Japanese media, everything they say is super filtered so if Toei is allowing him to say this, well ya know

Apparently at one point it got so difficult that he wanted out of the project and simply not do it (but of course he couldn't do so).

Why do you think the only one who was allowed to get extra scenes was Cosmos, aka Takeuchi's natural favorite after UsaMe?

The same thing happened with Kon and the finale of Eternal.
During the interview, she was trying as hard to say between the lines, ''Look I know the plot is dumb, I wanted to change it but I couldn't. I'm sorry, it wasn't within my power, I tried my best. Please don't send me death threats if you dislike the movie''. :P

We also know that both Kon and Takahashi never got to communicate with the Hime but she was filtering their questions by Osabu which I have to ask, then why in the world would she be chief supervisor on something she simply doesn't want to do?

If it were me, I would flatter Naoko as a genius at concepts and while I was flattering her, get her to agree to all of the staff's ideas, which I would convince her were her own all along.

Then when she played this card:

I would counter by reminding her of how, as a hands-off goddess, SHE was responsible for making the anime such a hit in the 90s by letting the grunts perform all the meaningless tasks like conistent art styles, character development and of course *gags* cohesive plot.
Without the creator, we would have none of this so by working from her muse alone, we would manage to rake in enough cash to make her current lifestyle seem like a rags-to-riches story.
No need to get your hands dirty, hime-sama. Here are the keys to your new car...we'll stay in touch if we need you.

Just call me Sailor Machiavelli.

Well, considering that Japanese idol group - whom have since already given up the SM brand and revamped their image - got the exclusive deal from Naoko-hime herself by simply performing a little dance in front of her...

Takahashi should have sent a group of young girls with his ideas to woo Naoko-chan and play her like a fiddle

Takeuchi is very simple, she sees pretty girls working with the Sailor Moon brand, she henshins into Santa and grants them everything and anything!

Maybe we should all start an idol group. I am a 40+ year old man, but I am willing to shave my legs as long as I get to be the blue one.
We will dazzle Naoko like this:

Lady Pen, you have to be the lead singer to take the focus off the rest of us.
Talentless, you get orange.
Memelord, you get green because YOSHI
and I guess that leaves red for Rika if they want in.

OK but I wonder if he contacted Kon or even Sakai before accepting the job. They both probably would have told him how terrible working on this project is.

Also - as fun as the openings are - the money and minutes should have been spent on the plot.
