As much as I love, love, LOVE the trailer for Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon: Crystal, my enthusiasm in the past day or so has been dampened somewhat by the massive nitpicking by what seems to be a fairly sizable portion of the "fandom" (I use the term very loosely).

I'm really disappointed by the reactions, to be honest. From the comments section of ANN's story on it, to the deepest crevices of tumblr and on to the youtube comments section....it's all been very disappointing. I've seen LOTS of wonderful comments or thoughts, but mostly it's been one big whine-fest of:

"WHY ISN'T IT THE OLD ANIME?!?"

If not this, then it's about their "proportions", their legs, arms, the heads, the eyes....the "dullness of the color" (WHAT?!) and so on and so forth. It's awful!

I'm just feeling very enormously saddened by this massive outpouring of negative reaction. I mean, yeah, I know: opinions, right? Everyone is entitled to what they think, yeah?

But come on.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with their proportions. Or heads/eyes/legs/arms. I have zero problem with the color. (The complaints about the color just utterly floor me --- the colors are SO far from being "dull". They are VERY bright, incredibly vibrant and they just bring it all together ---- I don't understand how anyone can see it as being "dull". This one honestly bothers me a LOT.)

From everything that I have seen -- that we have all seen -- is the fact that the characters are VERY obviously being animated to be MUCH closer to their manga likenesses. They are not fully "manga-fied", but they are so close it's incredible. The job that the art team has done is just stunning, with how close they actually did manage to get it to the manga.

I do admit, however, the eyes are taking even me some getting used to. But everything else is just so gorgeous, that that is very easily overlooked.

Again, I feel that the proportions are just fine. Long, elegant limbs, which were Takeuchi's trademark in the manga. The head...I have absolutely no idea why people are complaining about the head so much. When you look at the characters in full, their head is perfectly proportionate to the rest of their bodies.

I'm sick of hearing about Mars' "broken ankle". Seriously. Do we not remember the final pose of Sailor Mercury from the original anime? Sailor Jupiter's pose? THOSE were broken legs. But dammit, they are OUR broken legs. I don't understand why it is suddenly such an enormous issue. Stylization, people. It's a thing. Plus, there's something known as "Angles"...ever hear of 'em? You take photos at different angles? Catch light at a different angle?

I'm no professional artist myself, but I did used to draw QUITE a bit (even have a few art classes under my belt), and even with my limited knowledge, I can see the Crystal team's use of light and shadow. I can see their use of angles and proportions. And as I stated, what they've done with it is absolutely stunning and utterly gorgeous.

I don't know. Honestly, I think that perhaps half of these people have probably never even read the manga, which I guess would be understandable, but....this is too much.

Honestly, I think you're being too hard on its critics. It's OK to find fault with something and not think every aspect of it is great. I do think that the character's heads look strange and lack the expressive qualities that I'd prefer they have. It doesn't mean I'm going to blow up and spaz out about it, but I am going to be honest with the problems I see and won't hide my true feelings about it. Likewise, I'm still bummed out about the way Momoiro Clover Z is doing the opening.

I utterly loved watching the first half of the trailer, it got me pumped up for what is to come. But really, I can't deny the flaws of the art style and how awkward the animation can be because of that. It really would have been better if they hadn't tried to make the designs so elaborate, as it makes it harder to produce natural, expressive animation that way.

I loved Luna's new voice anyway.

never forget, The loudest crowd is always the most negative one. It doesn't mean in any way that they are:

-Fan
-Caring about the anime
-Not gonna watch it without fail every week
-Speak for the majority
-Actually think what they wrote

etc..

The real meter will be the view counts of the various streaming sites on it's actual popularity.

And the trailor alone is 3mil viewers so far. And that's only youtube.

Well the phrase "Don't judge a book by its cover" is thrown out the window in Tumblr and many other places ... I made a sacastical post and got some flame and misunderstanding ... then I made a serious post too...

But yeah I agree with you SLS, people are being WAAAAAAAAAAY to hard for a series that was not intended to show on TV ... not shown on TV does mean that there won't be a high budget to this anime

DON'T EXPECT TOO MUCH!

As much as I love the trailer, I'll be honest and say that I can see
some of the "nitpicks" are validated. Sometimes Usagi's eyes are
indeed off. I think the necks are very thin, making the heads look
big. They have really long legs, and arms, even for anime. Even
longer than the 90's SM anime. There are also some funny animation
mishap. Like misplacement of Usagi's hair. However all anime have
these. I only bring it up, because I care about Sailor Moon so much
that I want Sailor Moon Crystal to be the best it can be.

That's totally expected. lol If you like it, you like it, & other peoples' criticisms, whether valid or not, aren't important to you.

I like PGSM even tho I know it has many faults. :)

Ima good fan of PGSM but I know a lot of fans dont like it. If youre talking about nostalgic reasons, Ive seen those "what did you do to them, I want the old look back" comments

I agree that they are nice looking but Ive always been the one to voice my opinion so meh, Out of the entire trailer the most captivating scenes imo are when shes sliding on her top and her hair flows through and she fasten down her odango and the side shot with the SALE! signs in the background (Stunning Profile and colors).

The worst shot to me besides they eye mishap is when her and Luna are running in the door in slo-mo :orly:

But over-all its nice. I wonder how her tranformation will be? And did she press the jewel on her tiara to do Moon Tiara Action.

Somebody' s post up there had me a little nervous when they said Dont Expect Much...and the Budget and all.

Hm :ohdear:

Another worry is that they might still have to do it hastily at times to meet deadlines, leading to animation mistakes/imperfections here & there like the original anime (tho it mightn't be as much this time, I guess). I hope this' not the case.

I think that shot might have been from her transformation sequence, actually. (Also, she'll probably say "Moon Tiara Boomerang" since that's the attack in the manga reprint.)

It's a reboot, it's to be expected...

Keep in mind, there are some people that love the older Sam Raimi/Tobey McGuire Spider Man movies and loathe the new ones and vice-versa. :grey:

Here is a fan edit that was being pass around. Sorry I don't
know where the original came from to give proper credit to.
If anyone knows, tell me. I'll give credit to the fan.
I have to be honset, I think the edits helps Usagi look better.
Amazing that a single small white dot helps the eyes look better.
The very first result on Google Image search led me to this:

Seriously, at least try to find the source.

I'm not paying too much attention to the infamous shot seen above. I think it's something that will be changed somewhat or at least not held on screen static with no animation except her hair flowing once the actual anime is released. It's unfortunate they showed us so little and decided to focus on such a flawed shot, but I'm not worried about it.

I do think some of it looks slightly iffy, but a lot of it is gorgeous, and considering how badly the animation quality fluctuated in the original, i'm okay with mildly-iffy animation in a trailer.

Ignore them. People who can't accept new incarnations of old works simply because they're not the old one aren't worth your time.

With how huge Sailor Moon is, by it's very nature it was going to be picked apart. Some of it's hilariously short sighted though. For example, some people were complaining that Crystal!Sailor Moon's finger bent the wrong way during the 'Oshioki Yo' pose... Even though it's bent the exact same way in the original anime. Also, suddenly all of Tumblr are now anatomy and animation experts...

However, at the end of the day it's a difference of opinion and there's simply no way of making everyone happy. I just wish people realized that something being in a specific style, does not make it wrong per say.
