When did they get it right for Crystal S1/2? Outside of maybe of very select scenes. They didn’t have one episode that was completely on model.

But no, you're right. It was mostly just select scenes rather than entire episodes. I know people praise ep 1 and 5, as they should compared to the rest, but even those are all over the place.
However, there were a few scenes in s1-2 I thought were well done. You could really tell when someone was given the time and budget to polish a scene. My issue is these were mostly the still shots and as soon as things start moving...woah!

I prefer the 90s style, but I was still disappointed when the defaulted back to something similar after Crystal 1-3 was received poorly. I was enjoying the new styles, I just wanted more polish.

Its hilarous how they reused tha background of the "moon spiral heart attack" like two times , one with the sailor neptune final pose and two with that picture of Rei , they seemed to love that background

I don't think Mari Tominaga gets enough love. I think she has one of the cutest art styles.

I like a lot Mari Tominaga art, it’s very clean and is directly in the top tier from her first episode. However, I don’t know why but there is something lacking personality in her style. It’s hard to describe for me, and I have absolutely nothing to criticize but it’s not in the « god tier » as were Itoh or Shimohasa (I really like how she drew Fish Eye in the shadows with his eyes and zigzag highlights in his hair though).

Anyone of these could make a perfect avatar. I just can't stop looking at them. It's wild that even the artists who were not top tier were so talented. We definitely had some stinkers in the 90s as well, but Mari Tominaga was amazing. Just look at that lighting and those expressions. Even if she wasn't god-tier she was peak human.

How much credit for certain things can we give to an AD? Electricity, fluid motion, etc, could all be down to the animator and not the AD.

When I said that comment about the electricity and movement, I meant how Mari's episodes constantly have this exaggerated drag between poses. Her episodes also have lots of static for some reason. It probably is down to the animator, but for me it looks like those animators choose to do these specific things frequently on Mari directed episodes.

Goodness gracious, as bad as some of the filler and MODs were, S and SuperS are so gorgeous. Look how fluid everything is and look at the beautiful art...the backgrounds, even when just a splash of color perfectly accentuates the scene. Watch the care in how clothing and hair moves. , the subtle changes in expression as the heads turn and eyes close.

They should have rehired animators who animated CLAMP's anime who also worked in the 90s anime in Crystal, who would have complimented the work of Sakou.

It is sad that Sakou was forced to animate the manga style, she was right in her suggestion to animate the 90s style.

I swear, every Kaolinite pose in the 90s was just iconic. These people understood art.
She was sexy but never crossed the line...though I'm still kind of shocked S was even allowed to air in America when it did.

Kaolinite is like a vampire. You can even put a head canon that she is since vampires do exist in the 90s sailorverse who got infected with the germatoid parasite. Kind of like Astarion getting infected by a mind flayer tadpole in Baldur's Gate 3.
