Until the reboot destroyed it. :P
Michiru-sama deserved better!

#JusticeforMichiru'sSacredHair!!!

Toei seriously needs a crash course on how to draw wavy hair, even till the very end in Cosmos, Michiru's hair animation is a total joke!

The Crystermos people never knew how to draw mature women...
In the whole adaptation, this is the sole shot that I can pin-point of in which Pluto even decently looks like she is supposed to.

^ Her left arm looks funny, tho - at 1st glance I was delighted by her muscular upper arm, but then I saw how her forearm is joined w/ it... And as usual, the bubble hair in that season. lol BTW, her eyes make her look like a Terminator.

Yeah, that's why she's only 'decent'.

Her left arm is kinda broken but otherwise, the face shape is good, the eyes are sharp, the nose is slender & long, her upper torso is really good, the hair is good, the front and back bow (by the way they are drawn) embellish her chest and hips.
God, it feels like I'm describing food.

Rather than bubble hair, it feels like they just splashed paint on her head lol

In the meantime, let's get some Tadano love, shall we?

While the height difference between ESM & Chibi Chibi is huge, why their heads are always of about the same size, if not the latter looking even a bit bigger, is beyond me (the similar case for Chibiusa too). Such problem has been prevalent in anime & manga for so many decades.

I was wondering if anyone had any insight into the animation schedule. It seemed like great animators like Ikuko Itoh and Hisashi Kagawa only directed a small handful of episodes, while poor artists like Taichi Nakamura did waaaay too many. Itoh did her most episodes in classic when she wasn't that great yet. By SuperS when she was at the top of her game she only did four in that season. Anyone know how it worked? Also as the "cheif animator" on SuperS, did she have other responsibilities throughout the season that wouldn't be apparent to the viewer? I've always wondered about this.

So Michiaki Sugimoto was the one closest to the 'Naoko style' rendered into an anime version.

Yet, everyone hates his style and claims he should never have worked on the franchise...
I like his style. At times there are those wonky frames. But man, did this director brought back what was missing with the action scenes of past seasons.

Ai-no-Senshi.net

I still remember Lady Aino mentioning the style is like that of Rayearth. @Neo King Rose

I don’t hate it. He has a knack from action/dynamic framing. I just don’t think it goes with the overall ‘vibe’ of the anime. I’d contest it looks more like Naoko’s work when people also say Tadano’s early work also give Takeuchi vibes. Naoko’s work varies too wildly to have a ‘one style suits all’ approach.

I read on a Japanese blog that Taichi Nakamura was actually working for a sub-contracted animation studio and that they were probably hired to animate the filler episodes in order to keep the production healthy. This doesn’t exactly explain why he still got to animate some major episodes but it would explain why he was hired to animate the rather boring, non-descript ones.

I think I remember that « Nakamura Pro » was listed as animation studio in his episodes, which always seemed weird to me because his style is not very pro…
It’s a bit like Aoyama Mitsuru in the Precure franchise. Can animate lot of episodes but the quality is… questionable. (I know Aoyama is a veteran and loved by a lot of Precure fans but I’m sorry his faces are close to Nakamura for me).

Nakamura was the worst IMO. But to be fair, he was the only one that made really good low angle shots. It seemed the rest of animators, even the most acclaimed by fans, did not know what a chin is, or how to draw the low jawbone.

Also, Masahiro Ando is objectively NOT a bad animator/artist. His style suits the comedic/slide of life episodes of the show perfectly. It’s just.. his style didn’t really evolve with the show. When everyone else was trying to stay on-model and give their best Ikuko impression in SuperS Ando was having none of it :P
