Ep.167 is so iconic!
Tamegai did an excellent job here for the Stars opener.
Before I would always confuse Tamegai and Kagawa during the late SuperS/Stars period because of how similarly crisp and sharp both their styles would become.
It remains to this day one of the Sailor Moon episodes I return the most back to.

The characteristic Kagawa angry eyes.

Tamegai's signature accented nose.

Dynamic expressions.

One of the best Setsuna the series offered us.

Really like Haruka here...

However when it goes to profiles, you can't beat Itoh :P

Am I the only one who thinks 90s World Shaking is far superior to Eternal‘s version?
It is superior.

When Eternal first came out, it got a lot of hype and indeed not only it wasn't just a 1:1 copy of the 90s version but it was also visually impressive.
However, in hindsight it has a number of oddities.

The whole choreography for one.
In Eternal, Haruka summons a stone/mini-meteorite (?) that just combusts off-screen, there's thunder/electricity generated...
Haruka is the Soldier of Heavens and that is respected in the 90s version - she concentrates energy from the atmosphere, literally crushes it into her palm, the energy generated tearing the ground around and she pummels her fist into that very ground.

(Which by the way in the French version, the very erroneous name of the attack is kept - Cercle de feu, brûle!/Circle of fire, burn... this is not important, honorifics are however :|)

Second, the art is so bad.
Haruka couldn't be more off model; the staff of Eternal couldn't steer away from the moe design to save their lives...
you're not the only one who thinks like this, I also think that the 90s world shaking is done in an excellent way, if they added the effects to that animation after the launch of the attack in eternal it would be fantastic *w*

I have always loved the movement of the hand when it calls forth the energy and the sound it generates is a real gem!

For the dead scream, in eternal the only thing that makes it attractive is the effect of the wind, nothing more.

As you said, animation in recent years does not always reflect excellent quality, however Toei is trolling us, they are perfectly capable of offering wonderful animations if they want, that is, IF they want...

It's a shame that, for a series that has given so much to many, and, indeed, gave us a certain quality standard in the 90s, there hasn't been the same care taken then.

Now, if Toei messed things up because he doesn't have much profit and cares more about pretty cure, I get angry! è^é

Look at this, then tell me if they weren't unfair. This is the Pretty Cure series currently on air, find some flaws in it.

If you can't (or want) to spend time and resources on a project don't do it, we would have waited for better times and an animation studio that really took the trouble to do everything to perfection, not that you put me in 2 seasons meh , make some improvements with the third one on the right track and then you place Eternal on it... Cosmos still has something salvageable but the movie format doesn't help...

Cure Nyammy's henshin is gorgeous - it's animated by Itaoka after all and I love the style they went with for the cat duo, it's super cool and original!

However, I wouldn't call the current Cure season any good either. I haven't been following it but the first 2 duo henshin were super lackluster.
In a sense they are kinda those of Cosmos but with a little more budget. It's well animated but over all, it's bland, uninteresting and quite frankly boring and repetitive.

We are far behind the times when Toei was making really good Precure, the last really good one being Go Princess; be it on the animation, characters, story, aesthetic etc.
It's not for no reason that Yes 5 is still so popular in Japan.
There have been some good seasons but the writing and tone is not as captivating as from the Go Princess era.

Toei generally goes for a very lackluster, kidified season (Delicious, Wonderful) and continues with a more polished, less safer one (Hirogaru) so next year's Precure is logically gonna be something to look forward to.
Also, considering Mahou Tsukai 2 has been in production for the last 2 years and it's confirmed to be on a night block, Toei's probably put most of it's talents on that series.

At this point we sound like a broken record but Crystal III was actually a polished and decent budgeted season as well as the best this adaptation would have ever looked.
Sailor Moon wouldn't have ever gotten a higher budget, especially not under Toei.
And we can see that they were really gunning hard for Sailor Moon to be a 'Otona Magical Girl', Usagi was the spokes-lady for OL with all of those collaborations.
However, for whatever reason, there have been some behind the scene conflicts which led to Etermos.
Regardless, we do not have the viewership of Crystal III.
If Sailor Moon didn't meet the requirements of Toei (not the same thing as whether it made enough/good money), and the Japanese public didn't respond to it, you can't blame Toei to not want to care as much for it.

Even if Sailor Moon is in the Top 4 of Toei's production, it still remains the less performing of ALL of their IPs.
Is Toei responsible for how bad of a reboot this is? Yes
Is Toei responsible for not caring about Sailor Moon because it's not as popular and deserving as it's other series? NO.

Sailor Moon is not Toei's baby. They do not have a duty to nuture the legacy of Sailor Moon.
Not to mention having to share a major share of profits with Takeuchi as well as having to meet her very strict conditions, why would they even bother with all this much trouble when they can easily get as much money if not more from their very own Otona Magical Girl?

At the end of the day, Toei is a company that works to make money.
It doesn't produce anime for the artistic value of it, for the sake of the fans or for whatever other 'responsibility' they might hold.
There might also have been contract obligations just like with what happened with Saintia Sho which led Toei to quickly produce Etermos to make as much money they could.

:minako:HEXAGON STAR POWAHHH!!! :minako: MAKE UP!!! :minako:

:orangeghost: And this was before the MCU. :orangeghost:

Hexagons seem to have long been ubiquitous in anime, like their being featured in this giant robot from the 70s: lol

More hexagons like it's the MCU.

It looks better when they're colored. When it's big and all whitey it looks egregious. :creeper:

^ [Re: The last pic] There should be a composite statue of them from that scene!
Yes, and also the inner senshi from the future protecting Crystal Tokyo standing back to back around that glowing pillar.
And as expected, Moon (in her Serenity form) & Saturn (in her 12-y.o. form; w/ her glaive) should have their respective solo statues - Chibimoon should have none, tho, since she's too little to have one. lol

Tamegai gives us another eye candy episode with #190.

The scenes of the Outers vs Starlights excellently lay down their duality.
Each and every one stands out with a distinct body language.

The 3 Outers are the stars of the episode and they steal every scene they are in!

Characters showing expressions and not being Japanese tatemae.

Then, there's this glorious, legendary scene!

Haruka, looking fierce

Michiru, looking serene and sassy

Setsuna, looking solemn and pensive

The group shots have amazing composition!

And, a marque de fabrique with Tamegai - the expressions!

There are some really cool action scenes as well

But, again, what really stands out here is the scene composition and how the group compositions and distance of the 2 transcribe perfectly the dilemma of the situation, excellent work on the screenplay!

The 90s Starlights Speech are kinda OK...

Maker is the most tame, looks like it was done by Tamegai.

Tamegai draws Maker the best by giving her a stronger build (well, she is supposed to be super tall!)

Fighter is done by Shimogasa and has some really cool looking shots!

Healer is probably the best and the most stylish.
However, I have no idea who animated her portion, it doesn't look like any of the regular animators to me...

Any ideas?
Tamegai seemingly handles the remainder of the sequence however.

^ Coincidentally that's also my personal ranking of the Starlights, w/ Healer being my most favorite & Maker my least. lol
If only there was more lore to Maker. There's hardly anything other than the 3 being loosely inspired from the Hindu trinity.

Even Sailor Heavy Metal Papillon having only 3 minutes of screen time while being a fake senshi had more background. At least in the materials collection.
