Episode 68 Part 3.

Imagine a movie in this Art Style ::love::::love::::love::

Parallels

Usagi too can be beautiful!

I love how even colors are different in Itoh's episodes. More vibrant and saturated (even without the pink filter added on the episodes). Seems like she had the right to use the most expensive paints for her works while Nakamura got shitty colors  And I'm fine with that !
Bizarrely, there's a dark yellowish filter on this episode making the colors look muddy

For Nakamura, I think it's mostly because he barely shades correctly his characters making them look very flat and '2D' accentuating even more the underwhelming art.
Itoh on the other hand has a good understanding of light and shadows and knows how to appropriately use them to embellish her art.

We had a similar discussion on Twitter involving Araki's art and why even the best animators couldn't rival him.
His sense of colors and shadows was simply perfect!
Spoiler: show
You can see how the curved shadow line from the top of the eye brow and the upper eyelid converging towards the bridge of the nose helps accentuate the features of the face.
Along with that iconic shading style of the nose making it perfect.

This is literally perfection, every line, every shade is at the right place and gives an absolute balance.

Episode 68 Part 4.

'The eldest, Petz'

'The second, Calaveras'

'The third, Berthier'

'The youngest, Koan'

'We are...'

'...from the 10th planet...'

'... the Moon of Darkness...'

'...the Black Moon!'

'We are the 4 Ayakashi Sisters!'

Sailor Senshi Sanjou!

Place au combat!!!

That was peak R part, all went downside after that (well from the Esmeraude arc actually).
Petz isn’t easy to draw graciously and yet Itoh manages to make her gorgeous.

Looking at Petz settei and episodes from Crystal, how was it possible to allow such a downgrade ? How could not they see that it would be a fiasco ? Not going to start at comparison with Crystal here because we don’t want to hurt our eyes but the difference is sooo big.

I noticed Minako's worn that outfit at least two other times and both times the episode's director was Mari Tominaga

Now that I think about it does each animator give the charcters their own outfit

#68 Part 2.

'Ii zama desuwa, onee-sama ~'

Oh, so beautiful! Oh, so Koan!::love::::love::::love::

Step on me, ma'am!

Tamegai made a quick stop! :P
He also did the flashbacks Usagi has of Chibi-Usa when she is down on the ground.
How do you and @YuYu Yuichiro keep track of each animator of each episode? Do you do a rewatch and keep annotating every scene?

Good question......

For me, I think the animators have distinct enough styles to tell them apart once I notice a pattern. They sometimes have a specific way of drawing a particular character. There's also the fact that certain animators are only available for certain seasons.

Tadano: If Mamoru gets me wet, then it's probably Tadano.

She also has this specific nostalgic charm to her.

Ikuko: If I find myself looking at a still frame for several minutes, Its Ikuko. There were several times when that happened and its ALWAYS Ikuko, she just has it for some reason. She also nails every single expression somehow. She also has very identifiable expressions and eye sizes. The thing is Her's changes over time though but it's still easy enough to tell due to her quality

Kagawa: Everyone looks great and also banana flavored.

Hasegawa: Everyone looks like ....... glass flavored or something.

Temagi: I confuse Temagi with Kagawa, but I think Temagi looks more [what I typically think of for] shonen-ish than banana flavored. Temagi's also isn't as expressive as Kagawa.

Mari Tominaga: It looks super humid. Everyone looks like they got soaked in Niagra falls. Her episodes tend to have showers or characters getting wet for whatever reason, the zig-zag highlights. Her character's bodies also tend to have a cute, rounded look.

Ando: Big heads, sharp simple limbs, unnecessary random panty shots.

Both Nakamura's: they look more 70s and have this weird way of blushing or showing that they're scared where the center of their face do this weird shadow thing. Also, the movements are slightly awkward etc. It also looks like the air would be really dry to breath in their episodes for some reason.

TL; DR: Most likely autism on my end.

To be fair to Kagawa he could draw wide hips when necessary. He was behind both the Black Lady Transformation and Luna’s human transformation in the S movie. I recall Makoto having pretty wide hips in her transformation as well.

This chart was a nice reference to get used to the styles of each animator:

However working on this thread has been a great exercise to study each and every main animator and get to know their styles.
Aside from the one-time animators, it has become really easy to spot each animator's style.
While it still hard sometimes to know the contributions of some animators, namely Hasegawa who was a chameleon on stocks, it's become very easy, for example, to spot Kagawa's shots on #200.

Kagawa's work on the Stars Opening:

95% sure Kagawa shots of #200:

You can see several of his key features here; the shape of the face, the big pupils, the sharpness of the features, the hair...

These 2 shots remind me a lot of Hasegawa though he is not credited on the episode.

This is one of the most memorable things I've ever read on the internet.

Agreed, when I think "nostalgic Sailor Moon, Tadano's style comes to mind.

Do you have synaesthesia?

These are the most easily recognisable styles, IMO.

This whole comment makes me want to give yo

I remember this chart and also another one depicting each Sailor Senshi in each animator's astyle, but I still find some of the styles easier to spot than others. Ando and Nakamura are easy to spot, but I find Kagawa and Shimogasa harder to tell apart.

This looks so beautiful it hurts to think that, unlike the movies, we're probably stuck with the upscales and are never going to see the show in its remastered glory.

Star Trek should've done that for its teleportation effects, which look more boring/unexciting.
Star Trek Discovery in Season 3 made it even more boring.

Ironically, a realistic rendition of teleportation would be the most boring/unexciting one w/o any accompanying light nor sound, i.e. the person/object teleported just suddenly appears (not faded in) where there was only empty space beforehand. lol

The Deep Submerge doesn't get the love it deserves unlike the World Shaking & Dead Scream! :mihiru:
Unfortunately, only that cropped version of the S Movie gives us the best quality of the footage (also, is it just me or the stocks of Neptune in the S Movie are disgusting full of dusts and artefacts on them??? The disgrace!!!)

Mistake! :siren:8):mischief:

I always wondered what was that red/reddish purple substance we see bubbling on the tail of the Planet Orb, I always assumed it was a reference to corals under the sea (it's the vibe that it gives to me). I wonder if there was any official explanation of it?

In Eternal, it just looks like wine lol.

At first, I was like 'Hey, it's cool they gave her Planet Orb 2 rings to differentiate with Uranus' until I remembered it's Uranus who was represented by 2 rings, then the 2 rings fuse into one... like what are you doing Eternal!?!
