It's good that more people are becoming aware of this issue tho, it's the first step to addressing a problem in the first place. If this generates enough interest these companies might even do something about it.
I doubt that they ever will, not with this amount of people who genuinely believed that the pink one is the better one. There would be no traction.

The problem is that Toei finds it cost prohibitive to do new scans of their animated television series if the episode count exceeds a certain number. This is why animated films are available in HD while the shows usually aren't with a few exceptions.

This tweet about color correcting Sailor Moon has been blowing up since yesterday. The guy posted a comparison video between the color corrected one and the non color corrected one, and shockingly there are a lot of people preferring the pink one. It is mind blowing.

So, it seems that some think the pinkness made it 'iconic, dreamier & more girly'. I wonder if that one of the reasons Sailor Moon is such a popular show to make edits and aesthetic videos of?

Some are saying the aesthetic was a lie :grey:

I am counting the minutes, I bet they will turn that into something political :D:D:D It is ridiculous. :D Also this argument is very weird because it is not like all the episodes are pink. After S most episodes are actually yellow/greeenish tint. :D Are they the "foresty" feel or something? :D

This looks really good. The white levels are low and the colors aren't oversaturated so there isn't clipping of details. While not perfect this is mostly balanced and competent overall. I've been working on my own project and I would appreciate your help as this would get done with both of us working together rather than separately. But if you'd rather continue working on your own then I understand that.
Thanks.
Appreciate the offer but I am not into doing group projects on Discord for a variety of reasons. I like to do things at my own pace.

They had no problem doing this for Mazinger Z... which is 92 episodes.

Okay, here's what I don't get. People are acting like Sailor Moon doesn't already have a heavy pastel color palette. Color correction or not.

First time tipping into color correcting the op, since I know it was the hardest so I never play with it.

This scene is the worst. I couldn't figure out how they stack the layers together when filming. The yellow hair from Usagi was particularly darker than usual. If I pull the brightness of the yellow up, the yellow background on the left would be overblown, which is weird. But then when I checked on the LD version, the yellow background was also overblown...I think the way to treat it is to separate the left section from the frame, correct each separately, and then stick them back together.

The rest of the op is pretty straight forward, just need more references for the backgrounds though. For the test, I picked a shot with Sailor Moon in it, since we have her color sheet. I ran a AI upscale to clean up the grain before color correcting it. And the result looks pretty good, except for the blown up credits. Do we ever had the op without the credit?

Also Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai (1991) which was 46 episodes and 3 movies and included in the same box set.

I wonder if any of Toei's non-HD home video releases are done correctly.

For example, the Cutie Honey laserdiscs have an ugly yellow tint to them while the DVDs appear to be on the redder side.

You got a screenshot taken from said OP without credit right there

to the stacking issue
Cels and backgrounds being stacked wouldn't just be it, there also had to be keying involved (which can be done on film)

from what I see here, this IS a single cel Luna-Art's Cel Gallery - Sailor Moon - Bank: OP/ED

It's the backgrounds that have to be keyed out and stacked separately to complete such a shot.

I've done a simpler (and yet more layered) version of this when animating/editing the Tokyoma Gaiden opening, (Prepare for Photodump)
The six separate elements

And the final composited image, done with luma keying:

My guess is they did a somewhat similar trick to get the three separate backgrounds for Moon, Mercury and Mars in that shot.

Sorry for putting my screenshots on here, I did it just to illustrate what I think they did.
